A Windows 10 forum will come (hopefully sooner than later) and this also gives us the opportunity to roll the Vista forum up into the main Windows forum. One idea I have had is to possibly create a Windows 10 EduGeek Working Group. This would be staffed by volunteers, taken from you guys who are going to be on the Windows Preview Scheme. Now, I know from past experiance that early betas have almost zero features to talk of bar Microsoft getting to core code nailed down, but as time rolls on you can keep us all informed on new changes as how they would affect systems in schools etc. as well as providing working solutions to issues created by the new features as they are introduuced. If you think this is a good idea and want to be involved please let me know below, but please be aware that this may get quite intensive the more mature the betas become and the demand for answers increases. You will be our eyes, ears and main problem solvers. So, if you think you are up to it, please take a step forwards.

Smacks of Big Brother to me, but then it's made Apple hugely successful and nowadays the great unwashed even complain if there isn't an app store. I'll still be downloading the preview (probably tomorrow as it is allegedly 1900h today and I'll be watching Denzel Washington doing some equalizing tonight). I'd be up for the WG, too.

Might even think of making it the main OS on my office machine. If I do then I'd be up for the Edugeek Working Group - but whole school roll out? Not sure I'm going to be as hot on it as I was with Windows 7, 7's gonna hang in here a while I think. Server side - I'm even more conservative about upgrades. I've got some 2003 servers I really should get up to at least R2, if not 2008!

Having one store across the Windows platform is Big Brother to you? I've never heard that one before... All I can see is that it makes developing apps for Windows alot easier, it makes having multiple Windows devices alot easier to use and is generally a big plus for the store.

With our pending move to a new platform I think that such a decision could possibly wait. The problem with sub-forums is that people (especially for new members or those not familier with large forums) either can see where they are or post in the first Windows forum they see (you wouldn't belive just how many posts go into 'Windows' (the legacy Windows platform forum) when they are asking about Win 7/8 and server versions. 'In-your-face' tends to work better for accessibility purposes I think. Edited October 1, 2014 by Dos_Box

Don't worry, it's a mixed boat and a lazy sysadmin. License wise (they're all VM's) I could get every server upto 2012 if I wanted. It's the fear of breaking something. Our DC's are 2012 though, got to give me some kudos for that
Oaktech Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 I was having a bit of a downer the other day, one of those 'i'm not really sure I like the way that IT is going at the moment, perhaps I should go back to AV engineering' days... And now they've announced windows 10 and i'm actually quite excited again. I'm still not sure if i'm excited for windows 10 in intself or that it represents being able to sack off the virtually unmanageable windows 8x OS. Either way, i'm quite excited about the future of MS computing for the first time in about 5 years!

I don't love the way that Apple's success with their app store is pushing everyone towards the model of "get it from us or don't get it at all". I wouldn't at all be surprised if a few years later down that route some sort of subscription is needed just to access the store. (Hmmm... maybe I shouldn't say that - THEY might get ideas ) 1

The only thing about the concept that worries me is if developers will create lite versions of apps for phone/rt use, leaving you wondering where the features you wanted went, or whether the demands on phone processing will increase making windows phones sluggish trying to run desktop apps? Or even - shock horror, developers will actually prevent their apps from getting lardy by careful coding!
