Gatt Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 The next version of Windows will be… Windows 10 | Ars Technica Microsoft today announced the name for the next version of Windows: not Windows 9 but Windows 10. Terry Myerson, executive vice president for the Operating System Group, said that the new release represented such a shift in Microsoft's approach to delivering Windows and in what Windows will be—able to span everything from an Internet-of-Things gizmo to a phone to a tablet to a PC to a server—that calling it Windows 9 wouldn't be big enough to capture the differences. rich_tech Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 (edited) Cant help but feel that the start menu is pinching a bit of Cinnamon with Linux there and the virt desktops. Nice enough so far though, 8.1 is a decent base to build up from just hope they dont stick an edge on every window ! like Linux/Macs Edited September 30, 2014 by rich_tech

fairm010 Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Now that's quite cool. I'll be the first to say that MS better provide a thorough GPO settings library unlike in W8.

An early look at the future of the datacenter from Microsoft « Server and Cloud Blog We are excited today to start to share just a bit of what is to come with these releases. Some of the cloud innovation features you will see include: Infrastructure upgrades: Rolling upgrades for Hyper-V clusters to the next version of Windows Server without downtime for your applications and workloads. This includes support for mixed versions as you transition your infrastructure. Windows 10 enterprise management with System Center Configuration Manager and Intune « System Center Configuration Manager Team Blog In alignment with these changes for Windows 10, the next version of Configuration Manager will be more easily updatable to support each of these Windows 10 updates. At the same time we also recognize that not all of our customers will immediately upgrade to this next version of Configuration Manager so for this reason we will provide support across previous versions. In summary: The next version of System Center Configuration Manager will deliver full support for client deployment, upgrade, and management of Windows 10 and associated updates. System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager or SP1 - we will provide an update to support Windows 10 deployment, upgrade and management with existing ConfigMgr features. System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (SP2, R2, and R3) – we will provide an update to support the management only of Windows 10. Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) will be updated with support for Windows 10. In addition, as Windows 10 delivers advanced mobile device management (MDM) to support evolving enterprise requirements, Intune will provide the leading mobile-first, cloud-first management capabilities for Windows 10. Intune is Microsoft’s cloud-based MDM solution and forms part of the Enterprise Mobility Suite – which delivers MDM, cloud identity and access management, and information protection solutions for your business. Finally, for Windows Server, Configuration Manager will also support the evolving servicing model covered at a high level in the Windows Server announcement today. We will have options for those moving to the next version of Configuration Manager, in addition to customers with existing System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager and SP1 infrastructure.

localzuk Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Next question is - how many editions will they be releasing? Home Pro Enterprise Plus all the N/K/KN versions My preferred scheme would be: Windows + enabling/disabling "feature packs". They could even sell some feature packs as extra, or make them available only to enterprise etc...

Wish they would go back to how it was with NT 4 / Windows 2000 and have Workstation / Pro and Server, thats its. No need for all this Basic, Home, Home Premium, Pro, Enterprise, Ultimate crap.
