Microsoft France boss blows lid off 'Windows 9' launch • The Register Anyone going to be moving to it quickly at their school? Or, are you going to be like us and say "we only just moved to Windows 7!"...

Like everything else from Microsoft, its always worth waiting a few years before rolling out their operating systems. Lets just hope they actually bother updating the GPOs this time.

featured_spectre Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I was one of 5 schools that launched Windows 7 in the school on the day of release, and it was a huge hassle. Would never do that again, I'll wait until W9 has some bugs fixed first.

Windows 9 isn't officially out until next year. Where are you getting the "next year" from with release for 9? If the discussions about Microsoft moving to a more "yearly" release style, then the release could well be before then. I'd hazard a guess of "in time for Xmas" in fact, so they can push it out on new devices ready for the Xmas device sale rush.

Unless its an RT device where its needed and actually works.. because i like it even on my non touchscreen laptop or the nuc thats plugged into the tv i think it does the job well esp on the tv as its much easier to read than a start menu would be and i only use a few programs so having huge easy to read buttons works for me on the tv. I honestly dont think since moving my personal pcs to windows 8 ive ever really missed the start menu

Doesn't mean that I'd want to run Vista over Windows 7 though.

I don't have a single issue with Windows 8 as an OS at home, I get on quite well with it. In a networked environment much like IOs it is just a no for me, Microsoft seemed to forget that SMB and schools are a huge market for their OS sales. Hopefully the Windows 9 start menu can actually be controlled with GPOs like we are all accustomed. Does anyone know if with the proposed frequency of OS releases; what they are doing on the server side?

abillybob Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I like Windows 8 and never had a problem with it. I actually think it runs a lot more stable than any other OS released by Microsoft. I use it on all home computers. Though the reason I don't want to at school is because last year we moved from Windows XP and Windows 7 still retains some of the look and feel of XP, I was worried Users would come to me not understanding where to click to access different things on Windows 8 so hence the reason I never went down the Windows 8 route. As soon as Windows 9 comes out and it does come with a start menu then I'll think about it, but I won't do it straight away. It's good to let new software become more stable and wait for Microsoft to iron out any inevitable bugs that will come with a new OS.

Herein lies the problem, if they do (for the sake of argument) update the OS each year. You may find yourself perpetually waiting as you don't want to jump too early, by which point you might as well wait for the next release.

Fleetwood Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Unfortunately I'm "one of those" people who installed Windows 8 but then also installed StartIsBack. I just prefer the start menu as, for me, it's more practical. I may get to grips with Modern UI/Metro one day, but I'm not ready to let go just yet. Baby steps! I must say though, while I'm not keen on the standard W8 metro interface yet, the actual OS itself - under all the makeup - is brilliant. Not surprised W9 has already been rumored though, I look forward to the previews.

Its fast, easy and I spend most of my time in Desktop mode and rarely use Metro apps (Only use Mail and Calendar) I suppose the point of computers in school is to teach the students how they work, how can we train the next generation if they learn in W7 and get to a job and they are using W9, I don't think it is up to us to say "nah" because we don't like it. TheScarfedOne Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Likewise...my daily work machine is 8.1, my home machine is too - and just upgraded a load of other people recently. Im using the StartW8 mod - which gives a Start experience very similar to what W9 will give!
SYNACK Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 We will have been on 8 for quite a while when 9 comes out, may wait a month or two for the glaring issues to be worked out but it looks incremental and if they keep it up with the speed and efficiency improvements it will be a no brainer and blow the doors off 8 which blew the doors off 7 performance wise.
