  1. Fair enough. I totally believe you anyway.
  2. That's a great stat @psydii - before I start broadcasting it, do you know where it's from?
  3. We use Senso, for classroom management which (apart from the client) is all online....I'll double check with them, just for be on the safe side. Cheers Boredguy.
  4. I guess we're lucky here: all teachers have their own laptops, so the suites are not used much for staff training. For other staff (Admin, Site Team etc) who occasionally need to do some training, most/all of that is done online anyway. We have 3 separate VM's as file servers: Staff Shared, Staff Home Drives, and Student Home Drives so having these VM's on different VLAN's is no biggie. (Student Home drives will soon be disappearing to OneDrive anyway). The only VM with significant overlap is the Print (PaperCut) Server. So one-size may not fit all, but for us, separating off the students in principal seems like a decent option. Thanks for the comments - keep 'em coming.
  5. All the bickering aside, this is an interesting subject and one I'm thinking about. We have the following VLANS: Production (Servers, Staff, Students, Printers, other bits and bobs) Management (Switches, WAPs) CCTV VoIP Wireless-Production Wireless-Guest We've just finished putting staff on MFA, so I think (and I'm no expert) that the biggest hole we have in our security currently is around the student accounts, which have pretty weak passwords. So to tackle this, I'm thinking of separating off the student desktops onto a Student VLAN, so an attack (either external or internal) would at least have another barrier. Yes, it'll be a pain, but it means I have done everything I can reasonably do to keep the school safe. Interested in any feedback. Cheers.
  6. Much appreciated. Why didn't I do that? Do'h!
  7. Is anyone using Wonde's TestRegister to records LFT results? I'm trying to prepare some information for parents, and there's a couple of questions that I need answered before I can publish. It's a very new, so their FAQ is a bit limited and I'm waiting on their support to come back to me. If anyone has found the answers, please let me know! Specifically: Do reminders get emailed to parents and students? Do results (negative/positive/void) get emailed to parents and students? Thanks for any assistance.
  8. Thanks AJ, yes, it wasn't meant as a slight on Ruler, who have been excellent for us in the past. At the moment, I'm stuck of getting the data out of SIMS in the correct format (I'm a bit of a SIMS novice), and I think I need to create a new profile with the correct details in SDS. I have had this response from MS (in case anyone else is struggling with this).... "You can create the Parent and Guardian sync files Manuel and sync them on a separate profile. but when you go to up load you will still need to upload all 8 CSV files. However the only thing that needs to be in the 6 extra csv files is there headers, with the exception of the school CSV . That will need to have your schools in it as its the Anker for the files...and since the Parent and Guardian sync is paired with the student it should in fact work with manually created teams." So at least I know what I'm trying to do is feasible. Incidentally, I asked Capita if there were any predefined reports that I could just import into SIMS (as I don't like re-inventing the wheel if I can help it), and they said: There are no pre defined reports within SIMS, you are able to go to 'SIMS ID > Report Viewer > Search SDS', these are the only pre defined reports we have currently on SDS.
  9. Hi, any pointers on this would be much appreciated: SLT want to use the weekly report to Parents in Teams. I've found this - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/schooldatasync/parent-contact-sync#enabling-parent-and-guardian-sync but I'm having trouble getting it working. I have contacted Ruler/Connect (which is what we use for SIMS/O365 integration and are usually excellent), but they are no supporting this at the moment. Is anyone successfully using this weekly report? Any pointers? Thanks, JD.
  10. Thanks Pete and Priya for posting. Useful information on both sites. The IRMS document (p36 "Retention Schedules") comes close to answering the question, but as I'm not a IRMS member, I can't pursue this further with them. Perhaps some background would be useful: I was at a GDPR training event, and it came over loud and clear that we shouldn't be hanging on to data that we no longer need. Fair enough. But other delegates were adamant (without going into detail) that there is a statutory requirement for school to hold on to some data. I'm trying to the bottom of this, but coming up against a haystack of information, when I only want the needle!
  11. Apologies if this has been asked before. Rumour has it that school, in our case a Secondary Academy, has a statutory duty to retain certain information for a number of years. Does anyone know what exactly need to be retained and for how long? If anyone could point me in the direction of some detailed information, and whether this is impacted by GDPR, I'd be very grateful.
  12. Hi, I think one of us is having mail server issues: can you let my email through please? :-) Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups: [email protected] Your message couldn’t be delivered because the address you’re sending to needs to know who you are before it'll let your message through. To fix this problem, contact the recipient (by phone or instant messaging, for example) and tell them to ask their email admin to configure the recipient’s mailbox to accept messages from you. For Email Administrators This error occurs when the recipient's mailbox is configured to reject email from anonymous users. To fix the issue, either add the sender's address to the allow list for the mailbox or turn off the mailbox setting that rejects email from anonymous senders. For more information, see DSN 5.7.12 Errors in Exchange Online and Office 365. 13. We use Xirrus extensively. Put in just over 1 year ago; generally very happy. Couple of things to look out for: 1. You do need to be careful about where the points are positioned. As it's not a "one in every classroom" product. We general use 4840's (from memory) and one point covers 3 or 4 classrooms. If you don't get the positioning right, you can get areas where the signal isn't as strong as you'd like. 2. The management system "XMS" can be flaky. Allegedly, you can create a template (or profile) and roll it out to other points as you add them. However, don't always trust what XMS tells you; you'll probably end up managing the the arrays individually. Having said that, once set up, they'll just work. I have not had to look at our arrays for several months.
  14. Exactly!
  15. We'll look seriously at W9 once the 1st Service Pack is released.
  16. Cheers Sam, another one to be avoided then.
  17. I've just found this thread and thought I'd add to to: We're in the same position as the OP (BYOD, Xirrus wireless). We've separated guest traffic to it's own SSID on a separate VLAN, and have configured SonicWall to act as a transparent proxy. Upstream, we have the local authority proxy, or we can also use their .pac file. However, while this setup works well for http traffic, it does not work for https. (So in the eyes of the users, does not work :-/ ) Looking around for solutions, looks like we have 3 options: 1. Get users to enter .pac file details manually (not keen for obvious reasons) 2. Get a Smoothwall/Lightspeed box, and bring the filtering in-house (although having seen the prices, this is not a cheap option) 3. Get on an "Onborder" - Guest GTP100 | onBoarder (this look more reasonable, although I'm not sure how it works/whether it's reliable for https traffic). I'll have a look at WebMarshall, but if anyone has any other idea's, I'm all ears.
  18. What's Bob Marley's favourite donut? Wi' Jammin.
  19. Could anyone recommend a decent PCI card to work with a Xirrus wireless network? I'm looking for something similar to this, but without the poor reviews : TP-Link TL-WDN4800 450Mbps Dual Band Wireless-N PCIe Adapter | TL-WDN4800 Many thanks.
  20. Rumour has it that thee's only a few school left to upgrade. We're currently on 4 weeks' notice. Small comfort I imagine....
  21. This isn't going to be of any help at all, but if you find a solution, please post it: I've had exactly the same problem. In the end, the user is accessing one account through Outlook 2010 and the other through the web interface.
  22. Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm still waiting for our tenancy to be upgraded - is there anything I can do to speed this process? Where can I find out when we're due for the upgrade? Many thanks.
  23. Is your head of 6th Kenwyn Jones?
  24. I think this is bang on. I come from a corporate background, there everything is locked down as mush as possible. Having just completed my 2nd term in a school, I've had a big change of mind. More and more I'm coming round to the idea that IT is about flexibility and allowing users (Teachers) the freedom to experiment and innovate in the way they want to use IT. I now see my role as providing a stable, reliable platform on which users can operate in the way which suits them. (Which is sometimes a pain in the backside, but the corporate "lockdown" model is a sure way to stop technology being used). I think.
  25. We use PSF. Can't really comment on the technical aspects of the system, but I can say their technical support tends to be "variable", depending on who a call gets assigned to. Some of their support is very good, while at other times we've really has to chase to get things resolved.
