I'm trying to write and know a few people in indie comics. It's my life goal to call Dan DiDio a PoS to his face one day. - I'm a CoC keeper (a bad one) and go to a roleplaying and boardgaming pub meetup often - PC gaming and trying to collect older games I love on disks. - I spend more time prepping for LAN parties than I do going to LAN parties. - "Losing is fun!" is a favourite catchphrase of mine. F*** elves. A few members of staff have called me "such a nerd" and I've just practiced my scowly face at them.
Tall_Paul Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I'm a geek in that I love technology and gadgets and am a World of Tanks addict but I'm also heavily into bodybuilding and cars so I wouldn't class myself as a stereotypical geek\nerd.

Some stuff (like gaming for example) has become slightly more acceptable and less 'nerdy'. If I were to categorise: Nerdside... - I love to bury my nose in a good comic book (slowly building up a collection!) - Mad on photography, that doesn't mean I'm any good but I do love it - Console and PC Gamer and have been for years - I wear specs (surely still a must for 'nerds'?) - Love gadgets!! Notso Nerdy - Big gym nut, borderline unhealthy obsession - Rugby player when not injured - Love cars! Tinkering, driving etc. I do what makes me happy! Edited March 21, 2014 by MrMat

smidsy Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I get called geek all the time at work but outside of it I would say that I am not. I spend most of my free time doing a hat full of sports including Triathlons, Surfing and squash. I do enjoy playing some computer games but that is on the wane now summer is on its way and going outside is a lot more appealing. IT is a job not a passion for me at the moment. Roll on the holidays.

But i'm not a "Massive" geek, sport is my real passion, I'm really into Golf and Football. I don't tend to touch my PC at home unless its to browse the internet or play a game.

Photography, Audio-Visual stuff, Military and industrial archaeology and history in general - I volunteer at an open air museum of ancient life. Military Jets. I don't play games - other than tapped out, although I keep abreast of the tech involved with consoles. I despise RPG board games.

Only this morning, I phoned a company up to log a support call and I got asked "I don't mean to sound condescending but if I gave you a set of IT instructions, would you be able to follow them?" My reply that I think I might cos I have a degree in IT & Computing and 20 years' experience working in IT so I think I might manage that elicited a nervous chuckle! I am so not a "stereotypical" geek either, although my friends probably think I am!

Although I'm guessing @kaphc probably introduced herself with a description of the issue, which would have likely been better than "It dun't werk". That's all I need to give the impression of "They know more than the basics". Unless they're using the wrong terminology. Then they just sound silly.

All the support person needed to say was "What is your role in the school?" and I would have happily explained I was the ICT tech, and we could have got on with the job without any embarrassment. In my spare time I'm normally gaming on my computer, I have around 300hrs spent on Rust at the moment. My other hobbies are watching TV, eating hobnobs, drinking tea and lounging around. On the odd occasion I will go out in town with my friends and the other half, I also go for trips down to Telford Shopping Center but it's normally in aid of something computer related. Though I don't tend to avoid social situations I do actually like interacting with people as much as possible especially at work and when I'm out, it's just an interest I don't understand why people think that anyone who works with computers is a head down, shy, unsociable person because that's never been me. In fact I'm quite the opposite computing is just a major interest of mine and always has been a bit like mechanics interest is cars. - - - Updated - - - I am a full blown geek I just don't look like one.
