Just finished An Inheritance of Magic by Benedict Jacka.

Just starting The Malevolent Seven by Sebastian De Casteel.

Over 1/2 term I read Fables (151 to 162) and MiracleMan: The Silver Age.

 

The Fables took a long time to get into, and the art wasn't as strong as previously. The last few issues were an improvement but I'd say that issue 150 was such a good ending that I wouldn't recommend the relaunch.

 

MiracleMan was much better but, given the decades it took in legal battles, will we ever get to see "The Dark Age"?

Just finished 'Jade Legacy' by Fonda Lee, the last book of the Green Bone Saga. Well worth a read if you're interested in fantasy, crime and gangs with an East Asian flair. Well written, great character arcs and some truly gripping moments.

 

Also finished 'The Fourth Wing' by Rebecca Yarros. A somewhat less well written book, that I would consider YA, if not for the amount of swearing and 'adult moments'. It's essentially Harry Potter meets The Hunger Games with added sex. Not an immediate recommendation, but the premise is interesting, and it's a fairly quick read, especially when compared to 'Rhythm of War' by Brandon Sanderson, which is next on the list!

Alice Bell's Displeasure Island.

 

Island murder mystery. Not my usual fare, but I took a punt on it based on her writing for RPS and her first book. Enjoyable holiday read.

The Daily Stoic - Ryan Holiday, though I forget to read it daily and end up playing catch up.

Borne by Jeff Vandersteen (of the Annihilation series). More fantasy than SF, a city in a strange dystopian future where civilisation has broken down and raids for food are necessary. A bio-tech 'monster' created by The Company marauds the city killing people. Two interesting characters plus Borne, an outcome of bio-tech, fight for survival.

 

Not as richly developed as Annihilation but still written in his complex, highly descriptive style.

Finished the "philosophy of walking" recently. A nice easy read and you learn just how crucial walking has been to important figures throughout history in some of the ideas they have come up with.

As for recommendations, I recently finished "Where the Crawdads Sing" by Delia Owens, which I found beautifully written with a gripping storyline. If you're into mysteries and nature, it's definitely worth adding to your list!

Not long started reading Fourth Wing, haven't hit any adult moments yet! but enjoying it so far, is interesting enough although not read much of the genre lately.

As i help out in a library every Tuesday I have been looking around and found a fantasy series called "Mistborn"

 

cover looks OK - but you can never tell

 

as expected - that library only have episode 4 - 1 2 and 3 have to be ordered from another library

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

it is cheap on Kindle so I have got it on that - I don't have high hopes but I though I would try it

For me, Mistborn took a couple of chapters to get into, but once it got going the original trilogy was great. I've not read beyond book 3, but I heard future "trilogies" weren't as good.

ive tried the later books as the first are among if not my favourite series but i couldnt get into them, though binging 3x 40hr audiobooks was probably more to blame - you should also be sure to check out the short stories from the first set of mistborn books and secret history for extra bits!

 

the enders game books and the prequels are also on my regular go to list!

Mistborn is by brandon sanderson who was tapped to finish off The Wheel of Time.

Many of his novel series are set in the Cosmere. Different worlds in the same shared universe, which opens up plenty of character, story or plot crossovers.

Andy Weir’s novels so far have ranged from ‘Very Good’ (Artemis) to ‘Excellent’ (The Martian and Project Hail Mary’). The film adaptation of The Martian was good as well, I’m looking forward to the PHM one.

 

At the moment, I’m reading Nation by Sir Terry Pratchett. I need to get hold more of some of his non-Discworld stuff. I liked Dark Side of the Sun and Strata. Didn’t like Dodger so much but I’m enjoying Nation. I don’t know if it’s his best book ever, like he claimed, but it’s good.
