Not sure how old this post is but with my governor hat on i can say that every school is paid per student... so if your schools is telling you that they don't have enough money it tends to mean that they are not putting enough funds aside for IT. (generalising of course!). As for funding I have taken to writing to local councillors, districts get a pot of around 7-9K which they can help local projects with.. you wont get much.. but something towards a big purchase... i asked for help towards a 3D printer and got a result.... There is also the option of writing to local business's if you can convince them that your helping local talent (In there field) then why wouldn't they want to help out?! Oh and a nice tax write of for themselves to!

We went for the "Snigger like 12 years olds" route haha! That being said i am pretty sure there are lists out in the internet that you can copy and paste in.. That being said i saw a kid put p 88 on an email... that apparently means poo.... Kids today!

You basically need to give full permissions to various locations.. The metric folder for one.. Then you need to give access to various locations within office. For example there are PowerPoint samples stored somewhere in the office directory on c that they all need access too.. It's a very long winded process of testing and going through until something breaks and you go through it again!! Where I am now the manager persisted and just kept battling through it. My previous school just bought 10 separate machines which were solely for gmetrix use ( specific login had local admin rights) ... But the school was an Microsoft academy so we could recoup costs from selling courses. Sorry I can't help with a list of the locations. But I can hopefully at least give you some idea on where to start looking. Matt

Yup.. We hate it.. And it's a pain in the but to get to work if you have any kind of lock downs on your student computers.. Will help where I can though....

Thanks, ill take a look at the group policy. In regards to encryption, we use truecrypt on the laptops so i cant think of anything that is doing it. What i find strange is that the other physical DC isn't requesting a certificate only the one virtual one!?

Afternoon all, I am in the process of planning for a main physical DC upgrade to 2012R2 from 2008R2. I have weighed up the pros and cons of doing an in place upgrade and want to do a fresh install on the physical server of 2012R2. I have transferred all the FSMO & DHCP roles to my other physical domain controller. All fine there. Left it a couple of weeks to make sure no problems. All that I have left on the original Physical domain controller is the certificate authority service. I checked the certificates and there was only a few to random machines across the site. (about 2 or 3) i revoked them certificates. Tested the machines and no problems still. However all i have left is one more certificate which i am un-sure about. One of my virtual domain controllers keeps requesting a certificate (Which is being granted) by the physical DC. What would this certificate be for? Is it safe to just remove the certificate services and flatten the DC? Any help appreciated. Thanks

I used to swear by DPM always! However In my current job i had to adopt Backup Exec 2010. I thought it was OK but preferred DPM... However i then upgraded to backup exec 2014 (Now 2015) and haft to say I love it. We have daily backups to disk that also copy to disk. That way we have a daily backup we can fly into on the disks and safe backups for long term. Stored in an offsite safe of course

Morning, I am in the process of building system centre. Now i have a question regarding SQL licencing. I want to get SQL standard 2014. I know its licences per core. I have an older server that I no longer use. it however has 12 hard cores with 24 total (Hyperthreaded) So for licencing SQL i need to buy a licence to cover the 12 cores? Costing me a bomb! What do other schools do? Build a purpose built HyperV machine for a set ammount of cores for hyper V? I just dont like the idea of having a machine built with Hyper V on it, to then host system centre. Any help appreciated.

So jealous I would love to do this! I wouldn't say a 4meg Adsl would support what you want. However with the schools saving on hardware by being in one domain? Would that make up the cost of the leased lines?

Evening all, We use imperial at my school. About 4-500 devices connected at one time and it just seems leggy? Is there any tips to sort that out? I have given the server 8 cores & 8gb ram and it doesn't utilise much of the resources, yet it's laggy when using it. Matt

Turns out i had to run this command; gpupdate /Target:User /Force /Logoff Sorted it out.

After searching my own problem, It appears i had to run this command; gpupdate /Target:User /Force /Logoff This then forced the users group policy to update and it worked.!
