Usual answer I guess - it won't be a problem as long as the DC has sufficient resources to give to the VM, whilst still having enough to perform it's own roles. Advantages are obvious in this scenario - if Capita hose SIMS, then it won't take out your DC as well. Disadvantage is the same as any other, as I have already said - the DC will need enough resources to be able to actually run both at once.

Ok - how were they disconnected originally? Accounts removed from AD? There is a time limit, after which a disconnected mailbox will be removed - have you perhaps gone past this?

I'm assuming that you know for a fact that you actually HAVE some disconnected mailboxes?

As others have said - get your own email domain (mine is with 1&1). I also use Outlook.com, which I have had no issues with.

NetAPP here, and always has been. Rock solid performance and support. Only had a few disks die over the last 6 years, and they were replaced automatically, next day, after the SAN's mailed NetAPP directly to report the failures. Not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for, and they WILL discount if pushed hard enough.

Assistant Systems Manager - this is a position mostly covering back-end systems - SQL, VMWare, Citrix, other administration systems and services, and also assisting with helpdesk jobs and general IT duties. Assistant Network Manager - this is a position mostly covering front-end systems - responsibility for the Helpdesk system and covering laptops, desktops, mobile devices and all other technologies in the school.
