Personally I'd ditch the VDI but keep the xenapp.

Some of the cheaper switches won't be able to give you routing options for redundant pathways, or free up your backbone by letting your edge make some of the routing decisions, or have the switching capacity that you might need in the future. Not saying you need these feature as it's probably fine on a small network but might impact if you plan on expanding, for example with 1:1. Sometimes you might have to balance the cost of the switches vs the extra bandwidth cheaper switches will use and the lack of monitoring/maintenance features they generally have. If your a smallish school don't worry but if you've got high number of users or high bandwidth requirements you need to be thinking about it and not go for the SMB option.

Sorry if it wasn't clear : my very first post had a netcat command posted into it. Things are pointing to a network issue if the transmit speeds are down. I would try plugging in another machine (a laptop or something) into the port the vmware sever is in and trying nc between two machines ont eh same switch https://sourceforge.net/projects/nc110/

Something is broken if you only get 8 thingmes per second. My advice is to do what I did and use a network diagnostic tool to get the number. The reason I say this is because you shouldn't rely on file copying. File copying has the overhead of the file copy protocols, the disk speed, the file system and other things that you don't want to get in the way. First measure the network speed and then determine whether you have a network problem. If the network looks ok, then start looking at the protocols, disks etc. At the moment you are measuring everything and you need to pin it down a bit better.

The main thing that I get from this article is that if a major UK university has this sort of problem then the best solution for schools is a full scale migration of all data to a decent service provider! I couldn't imagine presiding over such a huge data loss when I simply don't have the staff to patch every firmware update on SAN/Backup

The route that Serif have taken is spot on (single page apps that run in a browser). What they failed to appreciate is how much schools are willing to pay for this. They have completely misread the market. The quotation we had amounted to half our entire ICT budget - for one piece of software ??!?

Same applies to the type of equipment: schools that runs thousands of chromebooks or thin clients will require far less support per unit than those with windows or mac clients.
