We found that SIMS only uses Office for some reports (particularly assessment manager). Most reports can be exported as csv or as HTML and copied directly from a browser into Google docs. Some of our staff using this method if they don't need to use the office generated reports. We have some scripts that pull data from SIMS and generate Google sheets on a daily basis so the spreadsheets are 'live' which is quite handy for admin. Indeed. Where we need SIMS we now use a terminal server CAL or a third party web client. Our issue is w Chromebooks that use MS DHCP/ DNS. We didn't buy EES due to the cost ( with only 12%-13% of our estate running windows, the EES cost is astronomical ) thus the cost of using MS DNS/DHCP is also astronomical, which (unfortunately) is pushing us further from MS.

We have 13% of our PC's running windows. The problem is that this small number of machines cost the most in licensing and support. All the rest are Chromebooks or thin clients. I don't think we *need* to use windows, but it's good for kids to see how things work in other places, and if we need an old fashioned legacy windows app they can run them through a browser via an HTML client. SIMS is a bit of a problem (as usual) but there are so many third party HTML extensions now that it's hardly necessary for most day to day operations, and in traditional Capita style (10 years behind everyone) they are moving it to web anyway. We are a large secondary so we have technical people onsite, it's probably different for primaries who rely on LA support.

Some things that put me off: 1) It's very expensive for what it does 2) It is poorly integrated with Single Sign On Systems such as Office365 or Google apps so student need to remember passwords. 3) Despite very heavy advertising only a handful of teachers made much use of it. 4) our GCSE A*-C result absolutely tanked after a year of use, so it either didn't help or had an adverse effect.

I would advise turning off band steering completely. Band steering only works by actively blocking access to the 2.4GHz channel. If the device decides that the 2.4GHz signal is better but the wireless is actively denying you will see a lot of connection issues.

Google Classroom works pretty well with Moodle if you want a free* option with parent notifications. *you may need to pay for SIMS integrations.

A couple of points Beer does not 'contain' isinglass. The point of isinglass is that is causes yeast/proteins to precipitate with the isinglass. Thus isinglass is used in the process of brewing but isn't in the final product. This affects vegetarians decisions differently. With a decent (cool) cellar and proper care settling you should be able to clear even the cloudiest beers (not withstanding wheat beers). Unfortunately publicans like this are few and far between so breweries are forced to add some sort of clearing agent. It's usually a rushed processes (not tapping a lively beer sufficiently far in advance) that causes the cloudiness. So IMO you don't 'need' the finings but they WILL help to sell beer - or stick to making stouts.

Minor things like this are not a showstopper. You just need to think outside of the microsoft box sometimes: docs isn't supposed to be a clone. For the particular example you gave; how about using a single cell table as a border or if you need something more fanciful using a picture insert, or even using Google Drawings. Also consider the vast array of add-ons for sheets and docs which add a huge amount of functionality. And the marketplace, which is way ahead of Microsoft. When it really comes down to it I've never found anything that isn't possible to do in Google and there are many things (such as forms) which, for example, give huge opportunities in terms of automated workflow allowing senior staff to 'approve' requests. Just replicating an existing system in the cloud isn't the way forward - it's the extra things that you can do that make Google apps a great platform.

Have you tried Google Hangouts? As long as both have the chrome browser running the students can enter a hangout with the teachers machine and then do a screenshare. It's a free solution with support.
