I wonder if the API has *full* access to all the data at no additional cost. If we put our data into hosted SIMS will we be able to remove it when something better comes along.

@PhilNeal One other thing, about the API, are other third party vendors integrating already and will we (schools) get access to the API documentation? It would be a shame if @matt40k point about next decade for maturation won't be SIMS fault, but the integrations!

Would you mind confirming whether or not the new SIMS will require windows at our end? We are looking at migrating away now because the cost of upgrade from 2008R2 for the Autumn release is too high. Chromebooks are slowly replacing our windows 7 clients so it is extremely unlikely we will have a windows estate at all in a few years. If (as with hosted SIMS) the recommended app is via IE this wouldn't work for us as we need a completely independent system, with a free API.

Most schools will know if they are due an inspection, and the early warning system isn't very useful for that because it appears Ofsted look up schools a few weeks in advance. What it is probably more useful for is surprise inspections - if a school is suspected of doing something untoward and inspectors are called in an emergency to look for something in particular having been tipped off by a parent or local authority. I think then the early warning system will be of more benefit. I've been keeping an eye on this for over a year, never see a hit, then we get a visit after a few weeks of some hits.

I saw a really good demo of iSAMS at BETT. It's really worth considering. It works out a lot cheaper for us than SIMS and is all web based.

I may have been cut by Hanlon's Razor; attributing malice to something that can be explained by stupidity. It seems amazing that a company that large could not properly test one of their products, but there you go. I'm glad they fixed this!

It would depend upon the volume of transactions - a larger establishment typically has more. For example, a school with 2000 external users who rely on a virtual learning environment, or one with 3000 parents who all log in to get parental reports, or one with remote desktop or VDi might have more use for SAN than a primary school with 20 staff.

You should probably justify that with schools under X users. Some large schools and MAT's have in excess of 5000 users.

Terminating is quite specialised, esp for OM3,4 so I suspect preterm is going to be the cheapest option. If you really, really need neat holes and don't like 25mm drillbits then I'm sure someone will come out for a price.

It's horses for courses though.It all depends on the number of clients and the usage. I think a lot of the mistakes made in schools is (through lack of budget) is putting too low a spec of kit in. You wouldn't want to put bottom of the line, small business kit in from any manufacturer if it has to provide the backbone for thousands of clients in a large enterprise environment. Some of the stuff you get what you pay for : the routing protocols on the higher end stuff save money, the stackability and management features save money. THe cheapest isn't always the most sensible option in the long term.

Why would you suspend them? Move them to a different Domain and give them an account for life.

At least with Azure/Google these have been completed for you.

The cheapest option might be to team up with the school down the road, buy each other the same model NAS and store them at each others sites. Then again you'll probably endup paying more for 2X systems than you would for the coldline/glacier service.
