We only action things like staff user accounts on instruction from personnel. I would advice that you leave the decision with the person in charge of personnel. This way, if any data breach happens or problem occurs it is down to them, and your department is in the clear.

Thanks @Haptic I will persevere to get this working. Do you happen to know whether it will update/install apps as well as updates ? We have a rather large (for chromebooks) 120MB file to push out soon.

I want to do something similar , so hope it isn't a hijac. I want to have windows computers authenticate to Google apps instead of active directory. We don't really need the AD any more and it would be more simple to have a single authentication source.

Chrome Books and Cloud Print - Won't Print Unless Manually Added
mjk replied to Sam_Brown's topic in Cloud Services
ok, we need to make staff login to that address so that they can select which account to print to (shared departmental accounts). Students don't need to, hence my assumption that it may be to do with user logins when deployed to device rather than to a user. -

Does it work if they log into the client at https://papercut/client ? -
Scripted install of AdBl;ock Plus in Chrome?

You can deploy apps to chrome via the management console, it requires users to login to the browser - but works at home too so is useful for deploying school specific extensions. -
Chrome Books and Cloud Print - Won't Print Unless Manually Added
mjk replied to Sam_Brown's topic in Cloud Services
Please bear with me as I'm not 100% sure this is the correct answer; it would be worth raising a support call to verify it. My understanding is that adding a cloud printer via the management console will add it as a printer to the local machine and that won't send the user details to papercut and will prevent it printing. Adding via a user will allow cloud print to send the user details and hence why it works. Our workaround is to publish the link to the cloud printer in a Google classroom that all students have and get them to install it. Not ideal but the only way we have it working due to the limitations above, unless you allow printing without user verification. -
Google apps for education has a neat resource booking system built into the calendar app, it is quite useful but a better solution is to give them to the librarian. I don't know about your librarian but ours won't let a single item leave the room unless it has been checked out of her system.

Activstudio Flipchart Viewer Download Unavailable
mjk replied to ricky123's topic in Promethean Direct Support
Does classflow also lock us into the same formats or can we export from it ? The problem we have is a range of technologies; so our default position is to discourage staff from using promethean because of the lock in problem. -

but that requires a license/hardware, and the personal can't be used in school was my understanding. -

I'd like to know this too. Promethean formats seem to be incompatible with just about everything! -
AQA Website is NOT IE Compatible!
mjk replied to chazzy2501's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
lol no I didn't think you did. Indeed; we are almost entirely in agreement. We've stuck to chrome for the same reason you stuck to IE - but we get to use Chromebooks, their extensions and AQA :-) -

not anymore. IE had a good run, since we deployed Chrome the masses have spoken and IE barely gets used. -
We're inside Google HQ - Your chance to ask questions...
mjk replied to Haptic's topic in O/S Deployment
I don't: it is disabled already. I started another thread here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/nix/155162-chromebook-p2p-updating.html as we are going a bit far off topic. -
Google claim that P2P updating is enabled by default when using ChromeOs > 40 The Chromebooks that we have are on the domain and have p2p_update: Current update using P2P setting: DISABLED I do not see a MMC option to turn this on and I have used staggered updates. Is the staggered updates turning off the p2p setting ? or is something else happening ?

mjk replied to Haptic's topic in O/S Deployment
Thanks for this. It says that it uses a built-in feature "p2p_update enable" Which suggests that it is a Google feature as opposed to third party. I don't see any management console options for this though... Seems unlikely that Google would develop a feature and require a 3rd party app to turn it on unless it isn't stable ? I'll start another thread about this -

There was a project https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-chrome-anz-education/8UBDPTJqpWk working towards allowing one CB to download updates and the others to download from a local client on the network. Seemed like a good solution to me but I've not heard any more about it. At the moment we just stagger updates. I was rather hoping we could have a completely restricted G+. At the moment there is one major problem: strangers can befriend students. I'd like to see an internal G+ for our domain only, with no age restriction. It would be awesome for sharing and for teaching students about social networking. Thank you for asking these questions. -

@Haptic Did you manage to get any answers about these? -
There is a proxy settings that you need to fill in. Thats all as far as I know.

Please could you ask: 1) When can we disable bluetooth on Chromebooks using the management console ? Bluetooth really isn't very helpful from a wifi perspective when devices are searching as it causes masses of interference! 2) is peer to peer chromebook updates going to be available anytime ? Again, bandwidth sucking. 3) It would be useful to be able to have CB's in the management console AND have developer mode on. Lots of students want to run Linux. 4) PLEASE let us have an inhouse only G+ site with no external contacts -
We don't care. Google are paying.

I think stacked switches are better because they allow higher availability, ie if the switch goes down others in the stack will take over. The cost of this is lower reliability, a stack of 3 switches has 3 times the chance of the PSU/motherboard failing over a modular switch.
