Can you hold out for Google file streaming and keep the data on GAFE with the illusion that they get a home drive ?

We use Google Classroom as a replacement for ShowMyHomework, it does have the parent integration, you can use a third party to import parents directly from SIMS and it's free.

It's probably a mode conditioning cable, so that LX can be run over shorter, multimode OM1. I'm guessing your connections are much shorter runs.

It's basically a one stop shop. You can use it for windows, linux,OSX and even network switches, firewall management and managing virtual machines EC2, azure, vmware - you name it. It's really powerful. If you've not got CLI (ssh) on the switches it might not work though. It's like a swiss army knife for a sysadmin. I'm totally hooked.

How does that work with Cameras and SD cards? or does it effectively ban these ?

Thanks Stuart, Students typically have a Chromebook AND a telephone connected to the network so a per device policy isn't likely to be cost effective for us. The fortinet solution looks better as it is unlimited users/devices and the cost appears to be based upon the kit required for a certain amount of bandwidth.

thanks @bald_pig Are you using the FortiAnalyser for log file analysis and does it meet your safeguarding needs. For example: would you get a notification on a dodgy web search or is it just blocked?

It doesn't seem to be very common in schools, I think in part due to historically high prices. The bundled costs have put this down a bit now so does anyone use this who could give some feedback please?

Very odd that the software isn't available for other boards. This isn't something we have come to expect from Google.

That's about right. It depends who owns the device - we have a hundred or so that are unmanaged devices, students own them and login to the domain on them. The school doesn't own or manage the devices but still gets to manage the user settings which is a good compromise. The device license is linked to the physical device but if you replace it with a like for like machine (ie when it's broken) it doesn't cost a license. so in effect the licenses are only £3.5 per year per machine all in. It will only be a problem if you want to replace 100 devices at the same time with a new model.

it's circa £16 for a device license. You only need it to manage device settings, ie you can still manage user settings on a chromebook without the device license but won't be able to do things link bulk manage network settings etc. The device licenses are perpetual in that they last the lifetime of the device (typically 5yrs) and you only need them for chromebooks.

Most of our servers are non-gui . No need really. Ideally, no changes should be made manually on an individual server *ever* so having a gui just isn't very useful. If a change is made it should be made through the management interface so that it can be: 1) tested 2) documented 3) backed up 4) replicated across as many server as you need. If you go ahead using a gui and make individual changes on individual machines you will have to do 1-4 manually which is extremely time consuming if you have more than a couple of servers.

Definitely Google. Everything is going web based and it will save thousands. The only reason you would put in windows is for legacy software, which you won't need to accommodate.
