I'm pretty sure they are all designed upon zero outage - even if an entire continent goes down the service will just flip over to another datacentre. I agree with @Edu-IT that you need to concentrate on your connections to the internet. ie you need to have at least one redundant connection that connects to a different service provider and via a different exchange.

Our college had been with Smoothwall since about 2004 or 2005. This year we've bought a Fortigate. Sad to say the support we were getting from smoothwall was getting worse and the fortigate was cheaper with better support. Smoothwall used to be a really good open source company and it was sad to see them stop contributing to things like dansguardian where their roots lay and go all corporate. They were much better before they were famous.

The profile will grow - but only if files are non-google ones like powerpoint. If you used roaming profiles you would store them on your server and make it more simple for machine roaming (you'll probably have space if you move your home/mapped drives there) and make it easier to purge using scripts if you needed to.

It doesn't download all the files like a sync - it streams them and they only download them when they need the files.

File Stream will fix that !

If you give your staff a decent home access system they won't even want to use USB sticks.

Consider that your total cost of ownership will be much higher if you have diverse systems. Getting them to work together will be the easy bit; managing and maintaining firmware versions, training staff, SNMP configurations and managment tools etc is going to be much more expensive and it is THE most critical part of your network.

We've got Fortigate/Analyzer . Found the Analyzer quite hard work but interesting to see some example reports that others have used.

I think the problem is with who creates the contract, not whether the site manager wants to be complaint. We already have GDPR compliant contracts from Google et al, but with tiny local companies are they expected to create the contract or are we ?

I bet you can count on one hand how many times that's happened to Google, compared to how many school systems go down each year because inept management teams wont fund a redundant / reliable in school system

An example would be a contractor who set up an maintains our external gate system: They don't hold any data or take it off-site but they have access to personal data when they come on site because the system syncs from our SIMS.

Second question is regarding external contractors who come on site. If the data is accessed remotely do I need to list these contractors and have GDPR compliant contracts with all of them or does this only concern those who hold the data ?

it's free to add google suite to your domain, and most phones (android) have all the apps pre-installed.

Google Suite for Education has this covered. Students save to their drive which has unlimited storage.

We lock the doors, and hope they don't have blasters.

It looks like it gives an exception for educational records. I assume schools are still subject to GDPR (esp employee data) but we will be able to do what we like with educational records.

I'm sure I was told this was signed into law already for may 2018. Is this the same bill ?
