I don't see why this is even a debate. The School I'm at has been running Liunux for a number of years; and the results are getting better year on year. The question should be: Would our results improve if we spent more money on higher powererd machines, windows licenses , Office and retraining costs. I doubt it would.

Fortigate it worth a look too. Came out cheaper than Smoothwall/Sophos for us =- which we didn't expect as it's largely targeted as a commercial Firewall and not education like Smoothwall et al. Seems to do all of the Prevent/Safeguarding reports well and is fast.

If you've got an old one knocking about you could turn the board into a 'dongle' and swap it between machines every half term; but from what I've seem of the software you'd be better off ditching it anyway, getting a board with more features for less money, and using free software.

yes it must send an interim update as described above; it can't send an IP address before the DHCP server has issued one, and that can't happen until the RADIUS has authorised it.

Rather than chucking out the 200 AP's is it possible to put in a workaround ? If you put in a freeradius box between the Merakai and the content filter perhaps you could use it to perform an ARP lookup and insert the ip address into accounting packet before passing it on to the sonicwall? I'm pretty sure you can add preaccounting scripts to freeradius but not sure exactly how to do it; for the cost of replacing it it's certainly worth asking on the mailing lists. Why is the IP address so important anyway? surely content filters are better working on usernames/authentication!

Have a think about how 802.1x actually works with RADIUS. The wireless controller probably won't know what it's IP address is when it asks the RADIUS server for authentication/authorization. How is going to tell anything else about the IP address if it doesn't know itself ?

Definately not straightforward. I don't believe that hundreds of peoples email and personal details should be stored on school systems incase one person commited a crime many years ago, It seems disproportionate and not in keeping with data protection doctrine. I hope the DfE instruct us to delete the data a few months or weeks after staff leave.

Does anyone know what the position should be if people ask for their data to be deleted? (right to be forgotten GDPR etc)

Suppose I have an ancient 2003 or 2008 windows active directory and don't buy the annual schools agreement from microsoft because the licenses are perpetual: Could I then get free O365 and get free azure active directory to authenticate windows computers so I don't need to pay for a 2012/16 active directory server update and can get rid of my onsite AD? And I can't change a password ? ever ? Isn't that a tad insecure? I think I missed the point here.

lol I've spoke to two promethean re-sellers recently and each were adamant to get a Samsung or Panasonic unit respectively! If you really want to get promethean you're best calling them directly as they have a team of sales people who are there to justify the extra costs to you. They will be more than happy to organise a demo unit.

I agree. it's really unfortunate that people don't look after their infrastructure. I think it's the number one infrastructure that network managers are paid to look after as it underpins all the technology in the college. Good for you making it a top priority./

Did that back in 2009 and never looked back. Really nice feeling to decommission services.
