Adding a 2nd Exchange 2010 Server
RabbieBurns replied to RabbieBurns's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
My school here is a private school, and a fairly large one at that. As such, and with students paying in excess of $20k a year each, it is run as a "corporate HQ" as that is exactly what it is. Email is as mission critical here as it would be anywhere in the corporate world.. Exactly! We are the IT department. We get given our budget to run everthing IT related. Once the money is approved, of course our opinion counts. We make the decisions, and if stuff goes titsup, its us on the line Well obviously if you are a small primary school with a couple of years and a couple of students, with hardly any money, they your hands are tied. Why not look at something like live@edu which would suite your scenario perfectly? As an aside, the purpose of my thread is not related to my school in any way, it is a seperate organisation that I also do work for. Im looking into DPM 2010 to do the backups of the exchange, but would like to have Exchange accessible immediately if VIrtualbox host went down. -

Adding a 2nd Exchange 2010 Server

Ok well it seems now is the "near futrue".. Exchange 2010 (non-SP1) is currently a Virtualbox VM sitting on a Linux Host. Now I have a proper HyperV host, my plan is this: Create a 2010 SP1 Exchange install, use the built in tool to move the exchange database store over to the new install, and use Systems Center Data Protection Manager to look after the backups of Exchange and the VMs (havent really looked into scdpm yet) Does this sound an ok plan? Should I leave the old Exchange VM running, for clustering or something? -
I think the same thing I used to fix the error in this thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/enterprise-software/69703-exchange-outlook-2010-autodiscover-outlook-anywhere-solved.html?highlight=exchange fixed the issue on my phone too

the first line of support at live@edu sucks donkey balls, and even they aknowldege that, and are working on it. Once you have logged the support call and got the ticket number, simply say you wish to be escalated to the support guys in the USA These guys (and girls) are amazing, clued up, and go out of their way to help (One of them called me from home at midnight their time just to ensure they could contact us during office hours, and was on the phone for 2 hours helping me (complex ILM issue)) So yeh, dont waste time with the indian first line support, ask for an escalation immediately. Also, the button on the page about checking the CNAME, whatever you do, DONT PRESS IT MORE THAN ONCE If you keep pressing it, it keeps setting the system back to the beginning (it checks like once every 8* hours or something and pressing it resets that timer) * off the top of my head, not sure what the exact number is.

The Stereotype of Tech Support & Coffee - True?
RabbieBurns replied to Rawns's topic in General Chat
Tea all the way.. My cup is pretty much never empty. The Urn is at the end of our hallway, so it gets me up from my desk, lets me stretch my legs, takes my eyes away from the screens, and keeps me hydrated. Its a HR thing! PS I have a proper MUG, 500ml at least it holds, none of this silly teacup type things! -
how can something that is a myth be a fact?

We have moved to win7 on our clients, a combo of x64 and x86. We having real trouble with printers and drivers, especially the 2600's. I want to basically just have all the student printers deployed to all the student laptops, (As they move classrooms regularly) and have them use the correct drivers for the relevent to the architecture. IVe set up a 2008R2 virtual server to use as the print server, but what are the steps to making sure all the drivers are there, and also assigning them to computers. Has anyone created a step by step guide for this yet? Cheers

right I guess sharepoint isnt a thing to muck about with with a bottle of wine and the tv on.. still havent managed to get past the prerequesite installs.. Ill try to make some time tomorrow I guess and work thru it.

Im gonna give sharepoint a whirl just now.. The idea of an online store is tempting.. Although failing at getting it installed just now, its failing at the prerequesite install just now, is there a HOW TO guide I Can follow anywhere?

@webman, a suggestion for version 3 or something.. we have multiple ppl in the IT dept, and it would be handy to be able attribute which member of staff handed out the toner. Would it be hard to maintain a table of staff, and then have it ask who you are when you install a toner? Is it something I could do?

sodium is salt is it not?

downloading 2010 ent just now from the licensing site so will just shove that one.. just making a 2008r2 VM to have a play with, so will just delete it if it doesnt work out..

this is just for the 5 of us in the IT dept.. and I want something that is going to be dynamic. Something that when a new document is created, it automatically appears and is indexed and searchable
