at work, all our laptops are now windows 7 and outlook 2010. Our exchange server is 2007. When these laptops are taken off campus, outlook still connects to exchange and works just as if it was connected locally. I have another place, with Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010, and trying to get the same to work. The only other difference is the latter place is behind a NAT while the first has its own WAN IP. Port 443 is forwarded for OWA, is there anything else that needs done for this to work? At the moment Im having to connect to the VPN before outlook works.

SYNACK, just another quick question.. What happens when the staff leave? Do they have to deactivate the software? I cant find anything written about it?

Is there something we can use to measure the IQ of some people that is an officialy recognised test?

I have a gentoo virtual machine on hyperV which I have assigned 2 cores of the hosts 6 and it correctly identifies itself as having two.. (not sure if I am confusing cores and cpus though?)

Do you mean that Microsoft wont offer support for a Non-Enterprise Linux distro on HyperV, or did you really mean what you said? Because, as has been mentioned a few times, HyperV itself supports most if not all linux distros..

We are fully licensed on the MS Schools Agreement + Assurance. We issue staff laptops, which they also take home with them. Are we allowed to let staff install office on a Desktop at home as well? If not, Im sure Ive read of a discount offer which they can buy a copy of office through the School at a heavily discounted price. What is this called, and how to we enable it for the staff? Cheers!

but why is it working for .adm files but not .admx ?

I can browse to the .admx files no problem. But within GP editor, trying to import them fails. It didnt show them by default, i had to change it to *.* to get them to show, and then selecting them said invalid file format or some such error.

Also RE linux and hyperV I run many different distros but the main production ones are ubuntu server and gentoo and both work perfectly.

the calendar is for the it dept only, staff dont have access to it, they just send a meeting request so it goes into our calendar. Also, if they were just adding entries, i could see them adding an event at 6am for an 8am start for the same day when they wake up and reaisle they had forgotton to book us - how could we control that? Also, if they were just adding events, we weould need to be proactivaly checking the calendar.. At the moment we all konw about it as the AV@school address they send to comes to all of us.. The current soultuion works fine for us, but its the staff its a PITA for really.

I guess now i understand how teachers feel when we give them instructions how to turn on a computer. I dont know any of those words Time for the textbooks I guess!

One of my colleagues in the IT dept here s a mechaniac and has saved me a fortune in repairs etc, by sourcing parts from wreckers etc and fitting them for me, but hes not the most patient of people from what ive gathered so not sure how inclined he would be to spend time teaching a newbie from scratch

Our HyperV hosts run 2008R2 Datacenter edition, but have a read of these about the core version: Server Core Installation Option Getting Started Guide https://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/r2-compare-core-installation.aspx 2008(r2) core is comparable slightly to a Desktop Vs Server install of a linux distribution, if you have any experience with those.. The core install is command line only, and run via powershell commands, however you can connect to it via MMC from a GUI version of windows.. to be honest, ive not had a play with the core versions of windows yet, might do so this term someteim.. One thing that is the main bind for me at the moment with hyperV, is the lack of passthrough support for USB. I have my nagios install virtualised on hyperV, and ive got a usb SMS device approved in this years budget. Howver for it to work, Im going to need to migrate nagios onto actual hardware to get the USB support i require.. I believe Citrix and VMWare both support USB passthrough to their virtual clients..
