Got a problem that seems to affecting several machines - including my own. In Word 2007 or any other Office apllication when you change font then the program will freeze for quite a while before the font list displays. Researched on Google but struggling to find an answer so seeing if anyone has had similar problem. Tried so far: repair of office uninstall and reinstall of office deleting all printers and removing all printer drivers running third party software to check for corrupt fonts Thought about MS updates but logging on classroom machine with same user account word works fine and they have had same updates. Any advice appreciated -stumped on this one

If it was through techsoft then support is pretty good.

It is usually just licensed for a year for education then you need to get the new version - our network version stopped working and we got 2010 version but guess it may be the same for stand-alone.

If you have a MS schools agreement then cost is very low - run 2008 datacenter and you can run unlimited virtual servers at no extra cost. Have 8 virtual servers here and it has been rock solid - can also use MS DPM to back up virtual machines.

Did the guy from dell make any changes? e.g. to switches? Can you ping the router ok from different machines on your network?

i recommend impero as well - does a lot more than tracking - good for keeping students' on task. Securus i found a bit expensive for what it does.

I would start with the switches/infrastructure first - work out the layout and make sure everything is ok, perhaps update to latest firmware. Then you can look at servers, doamin, active directory. Make sure hardware is ok before configuring otherwise you may have to do it all again.

Somone could make a bit of money here - remember RM charging £1000 a machine years ago

It is good to expose students top different operating systems though macs work out expensive. I think most music studios use PCs - Cubase essentials is good. Most art/design stuff can be done just as well on PC's - the video editing stuff - imovie,final cut is good on mac.

You can connect to PC with supplied USB cable and drag and drop documents into the kindle.

You are way below recommended ratio of student to computers though i can't remember exact ratio off the top of my head. How about dual purpose classrooms with flip down lids or similar? There are a lot of systems out there. Can be expensive initially but cheaper in the long run compared to laptops - must be some money about with that many kids on roll.

You are pretty much spot on with your assessment of how RM works. Pretty easy to get grips with - most schools with RM will have a support contract with them and you can also go on their training courses/technical seminars. Don't think it is worth doing the training beforehand as it would be pretty easy to manage an RM network if you have MS skills - though I suppose you have to convince propective schools of that. Also quite a few schools are going away from RM to standard MS networks.

dunno about DNLA but i bought a £300 32" toshiba LCD from richer sounds HD high res picture and it has been superb. Richer sounds sell extended warranty very cheap. If you go into their shop check web price first - shop price is dearer but they will reduce to the web price with no hassle.

Had mine a week: Screen and text really nice and clear. Very light and ergonomic. Battery life great. Takes 60 seconds or less to get a book off amazon - there 4700 free classics alone on there - if you on in to classics then worth buying just for that e.g. dickens, sherlock holmes, joseph conrad - have got 80 books on already not bought one yet. Downloaded a few from project gutenburg - they have loads in kindle/mobi format. Not tried newspapers/pdfs yet. Only downside i find is that there are no illustrations in the books though it is obviously capable of good images - pehaps will be addressed as more are converted.

Have never used an e-reader but seriously thinking about pre-ordering one of these - wifi only is £109. Can anyone give me feedback on using previous versions? See amazon front page - www.amazon.co.uk

can't remember the name of them - someone running rm will probably post but there are usb drives you can get that emulate floppies that you can use - they have a little switch on the side to switch between emulation modes. Look on rm site and then look on google where you can buy em cheaper than rm probably.

I provide guest wireless access for post 16 with seperate vlan - internet only so they can't hack into rest of network. Main issue I can see is if you start encouraging all students to bring their own equipment then the poorer students whose families can't afford notebooks, ipods etc are going to miss out. Maybe at some stage we will be able to give every student an ipod type device as they get cheaper and we get most applications working in a browser - probably not as far off as we think.

Am in a different school now - so server setup different - got about 14 servers as school is bigger - but moving these over to virtual using MS hyper V. Depends on your budget - virtual servers are best if you are getting new servers - either a SAN if you have plenty of money or i am using 2 dell R710 rack servers. You can probably wipe and re-use the old RM servers - you have to be careful about what data needs saving e.g. home folders, shared stuff, mail. Definitely worth going to a vanilla sytsem - not only cost savings but control over what you are doing as you have experience of vanilla. RM CC3 works ok but you can do everything yourself on vanilla if you have knowledge. Also means you can go to windows 7 when you are ready without shelling out for CC4 which has had teething issues.

Hi, have not gone to windows 7 but have previously gone from cc3 to xp - with help of consultants who botched it and left it to me to sort out! Main advice - forget RM active directory and start afresh - there are bound to be things in there customised by RM which will cause problems. You can still base your new AD around the same OU's and layout if you want but just create your own. Time scale is difficult - depends on your experience - it is really a summer job - so looks like you may be too late for this year. Also windows 7 - you really need server 2008 R2 - but look at the posts on here - some schools have it working but a lot are holding off still - there are quite a few things to iron out regarding printers, backgrounds, profiles etc. Good luck :-)
