  1. It's not ideal but in some ways I would sooner it was burnt than going into the environment.
  2. thanks for helpful suggestions - going up today to have a look
  3. I rent a house out and the tenant has a new custom built PC - he plugged it in and power supply went bang. He got a replacement PC from the company and exactly the same happened. The fuses tripped but could be reset ok. He has lived there for 3 years and is a good tenant, never had problems before. He does run a lot of stuff on the circuit. I can get an electrician out to check circuits but wonder what is going on?Any ideas? Electrical safety check and certificate was done ok 3 years ago. Thanks for any advice.
  4. Every local authority must have similar needs for IT - HR, data access, safeguarding etc. If the government procured a system that could be used by all authorities it would save a fortune. However this seems impossible same as police, NHS etc. No one seems to have the foresight, ability or power to do this.
  5. I have found https://www.komoot.com/ to be useful when route planning showing off road options.
  6. I've got a mountain bike but changed knobbly tires for smoother ones. Easier on road but still ok on gravel/towpaths.
  7. Years ago I had a transit van and I found a simple black switch that disconnected the ignition installed by previous owner. I used it when parking up. It saved it from being stolen twice when thieves broke into and couldn't start it. Maybe something that needs to come back into fashion?
  8. Thanks for recommendations will have a look
  9. Can anyone recommend a trail camera? Not too expensive as I want to leave it out at different country parks in the city. I do environmental volunteering and want to see what animals are out and about especially at night. Thanks
  10. Really noticing food inflation when I went tesco yesterday. e.g. used to be two packets of cheese for £3 - now £4 with one packet of mozzarela £2.60 that is 33 percent inflation and gas/electric way higher than that. So headline figure of inflation is not representative of typical cost increase to average person. I got rid of virgin tv box and landline - reduced monthly broadband bill from £58 to £28
  11. looking at linkedin spam messages What used to be the personnel department that morphed into human resources are now talent co-ordinators. I can feel a victor meldrew moment coming on.
  12. Do you find that this cuts down on printing worksheets etc? My last school of 1200 students were printing/copying 2 million pages a year.
  13. pizza - buy a panasonic bread machine - makes dough in 45 minutes. Can make them as nearly as quick as takeaway.
  14. It will never happen - more distraction tactics. Can't stop illegal scooters - halfords sell about 10 sorts. In fact just legalise scooters and say they can go same place as bikes.
  15. Having just read Sherlock Holmes The red-headed League I am suspicious of this
  16. This made me smile. Man finds lost dog and enters it in a dog show. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-62124148
  17. my fairly new iphone se doesn't work at the end of the day because battery life is so poor
  18. This is not advice and carries some risk however I have invested in this: https://rippleenergy.com/ Basically shares in a co-operative wind farm - you get returns back through your electric bill and have to sign up to one of the approved suppliers. It's a long term investment and depends on electricity price how soon you get your money back. Wind farm on stream end of next year with 20 to 25 year lifespan.
  19. I don't really understand why anyone runs exchange any more - I got rid of it ten years ago at a school - just use office 365 or gmail.
  20. I have dabbled in some on etoro - the spread is wide so not best value but easy to trade. Cardano (Ada) you get staking rewards every month - think of it as interest. It is a gamble but I think there may be some future in some of the coins. Bank of England keep issuing warnings against crypto - makes may me think they are scared of it. Is fiat currency that stable? - it is no longer exchangeable for gold :-)
  21. Don't worry the government has a plan for loads of retired teachers to come back and help out. They'll be arriving on flying pigs.
  22. Strange reasoning - as mentioned above. Personally I much prefer google apps to microsoft/adobe for many reasons - ease of use, simplified operating systems, good support, protection from ransomware, more advanced education features such as classroom. However it would be a huge change from what you have currently and would need a lot of training. You would struggle to replace the Adobe, music and design software with similar packages. It is fine for secondary but will SMT understand what is involved in changing over and provide support?
  23. get sample printouts - quality is awful compared to laser. Our staff would not have accepted it, yours may but I would check with SMT :-)
  24. I suppose that is the problem with thin case design - had several surface pros at school that had been dropped and screen cracked - had to write them off because you cant get the case straight enough to take a replacement screen. Such a waste of an otherwise working unit.
  25. This goes against the right to repair idea https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49884827 and is not good for the environment. I would like to put a bigger ssd hard drive in my macbook but guess it wouldn't be easy. I suppose they just want you to buy new stuff.
