What free vpn software are we talking about? A vpn solution looks best for us as direct access is too restrictive on the client systems it allows - just need to get some ideas on what is best.

Have not tried vmware but had no problems with hyper v -simple to setup yourself and very cheap if you have a MS schools agreement.

Don't think it causes problems installing by gpo just that a lot of people struggled to get it to roll out properly

If 2003 was installed by group policy then you could remove it by removing the gpo and making sure the remove when falls out of scope option is enabled. Office 2007 and 2010 are not that easy to install through group policy though - microsoft recommend installing on an image - reimaging or manual install may be your best option.

The best route is probably MSCE - official Microsoft exams - would recommend Server 2008 and windows 7 courses. Courses can be expensive but if you have got time to do self study then you can get training kits off amazon and exams are only about £80 each - I would ask your school if they would help towards cost.

I used manuals from HP and searched on edugeek fourms. Basically you create the vlans on your core switches (5604s) and create vlans with same number on other connected switches. Make sure the ports that connect switches(uplinks) are tagged to that vlan on core and edge switaches. Then on the ports you want to force on to that vlan make them untagged. You have to configure gateway of vlan on core switch to match gateway in DHCP - also need to put ip-helper address on vlan via Cli command in telnet so that they can communicate with your dhcp server. When you can successfully get devices to pick up a ip address on the right scope and connect to internet then start thinking about access lists to restrict traffic.

If you have a vlan then you can setup access lists to isolate that vlan from the rest of the network so you would not radius etc.

We are upgrading 75 machines with new motherboards and processors - as they came with oem windows xp licences we have had to buy new basic windows 7 licences even though we have schools agreement to allow upgrade to latest version of windows 7. If I sell the old motherboards, processors and memory on ebay for the schoool - can I also sell on the XP licence as part of the bundle since it came with this hardware? Any advice appreciated.

fairly cheap way: setup vlans - isolate guest wireless from rest of network use smoothwall as a transparent proxy for guest wireless - license is not much and you can use old low spec kit run dhcp on one server for the guest scope allowing any device to connect run dhcp for rest of network on a different server but use whitelist of mac addresses - this can be done through microsoft DHCP server - see other threads - this only allows approved devices to get an address on your main network

had occasional problem with proxies on IE 9 - as a last resort you could go back to IE8 - if you uninstall IE9 from updates (go to programs - uninstall programs - show updates) then after a reboot it will be back to IE8

I think XP needs the desktop.ini file so depands whether you are running a mixed environment with win 7 and XP

Bought a load of stations off them - had no problems - good price and very professional. Sent us a test model and custom built/imaged machines within a short time scale.

thanks for help with this - have tried users with no profiles and seems ok on xp and win 7 - bit more testing to do before I try it on one year group - will also look at roaming profiles to see what logon times are like. mark

Having to run a mixed environment for a while - win 7 and XP. After messing around with mandatory profiles for win 7 decided it would be best to have no profile at all and redirect everything through group policy. Have tried this with a test user and seems ok on XP machines as well (we had mandatory profiles before) - but just worried I am going to run into some issues somewhere - can anyone advise on potential pitfalls? Seem to remember someone posting that you should not customise internet explorer as this can slow things down.

looking at DT2's link - have tried some of this already on staff laptops - ntlm but will try changing settings to see if it makes any difference.

Not using ts gateway on this - have tried using domain\username but still get the prompt for individual servers - guessing its something to do with not trusting/recognising the farm name but struggling to find an answer.
