We have had no problems with google docs - support from google is very good. Ironically we chose google because integration with active directory was better though this was a while ago and things may have changed with office 365. Collaboration tools are very good in google docs - working simultaneously on documents, sharing to individuals, part of organisation or public.

If it is just for disaster recovery then you could use amazon glacier AWS | Amazon Glacier – Cloud Archive & Backup Storage it is cheap for storage but more expensive to restore quickly.

Not sure why data protection is an issue - Google is registered with the US-EU Safe Harbour agreement. Not trying to be a saleperson for google but google apps for education is the same product as google apps for business used by 5 million companies and you get it for free. The security and backup are going to be more robust than you can do in house and you don't have to worry about disaster recovery. We still run Office and home folders alongside google apps but the email, 30GB of cloud storage and collaboration tools are really useful. I think keeping things in house for the sake of it is old fashioned and you could free up money for other things.

we have recently had a new sims server - virtual server hyper V 8GB ram allocated Server 2012 with MS SQL 2008 R2. Separate drives for sql data and docstorage. Quite a large school and all running ok so far.

google apps for education is free and will give you 30GB per user. We use it but still have home folders as well - not sure whether you could cope with only online storage - need a pretty fast/robust internet connection

Am setting up similar here for sims web apps. Set it up on one server and added two session servers - I let them get addresses from DHCP - did not configure anything in DNS and when you connect to the name of the first one then it automatically uses the next session server for each user accessing the remote app.

I think there could be advantages in 1 to 1 scheme - have seen them work well in harrogate school but they are already working at a high level with good standards of discipline, attainment and quite an affluent catchment area. Not so sure it would work so well in other colleges. It requires a big culture shift from teaching staff - need to be able to keep students on task without limiting them in the ways we do at the moment by locking down games, monitoring via impero etc. Cost is a big factor - harrogate had to go to 200MB internet and upgrade switches to 10GB backbone as well as huge number of access points. Also you would need to give staff an ipad each so they can get the best out of them and they would probably still require a laptop or desktop in the room as most don't like to use them to create content on. Staff would need the higher capacity ipads and they would need replacing every 3 years at least as apple would not allow them to run latest ios after that probably. Add on to this sims emerge, foldr to access existing resources, apple TVs etc. I think that we need to give students access to the internet on demand as that is the way the world works now - we all use google, you tube when we want to know how to do something but it is finding the best solution and managing the transition that is difficult.

Reviving old thread rather than starting a new one. Have been using HP Procurve manager for a while - can update software on various model HP procurve switches ok but rom version does not change to match SW version e.g. ProCurve J4899B Switch 2650 SW version 10.83 ROM 08.02 - surely ROM version should update? Have tried SW versions 10.113 10.83 10.74 and manually importing 08.98 from HP site marked as use for intermediary update - all no joy. Have tried booting to secondary image. Any ideas?

Have run hyper V on Dell poweredge servers for a few years with no problem. Get plenty of RAM. If you get MS Server 2012 datacenter edition you are licensed to run an unlimited number of virtual servers.

We are having a new server configured today with the help of LEA. Mine is virtual with hyper V. We have Server 2012 running SQL 2008 R2.

I have got a qnap with Seagate ST31000528AS CC38 on raid 5 and replaced one of them with a Seagate ST2000DM001-9YN1CC4C - actually higher capacity and it rebuilt in the raid ok - so guessing you would be ok.

If reports are slow then renaming my sims documents to my sims documents old to force it to recreate a new folder works so may be connected as new users have a new folder but not sure about sims in general.

Google has worked well here - support is good and you can sync to outlook if you want to.

I found even disabling and stopping it did not work but restarting after disabling fixed it.

Do you have Adobe products installed? CS3? We had this with bonjour service running - disable it and restart machine. It might be listed as the first service in services as ##Id_String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762## just to confuse you.

Yes i have had that one - can't remember name of firm but after a bit of questioning they admitted they weren't from microsoft but sold microsoft products :-) a way to get past the call screening from reception

We use a qnap nas - this can emulate a time machine at a lower cost and you can put 4 x 4GB sata disks in. You can choose folders to sync to time machine so can have just user data.

for desktop redirection under settings in group policy make sure grant user exclusive rights its not ticked as this can stop it working.

I use dpm with NAS box - works pretty well after initial setup - next to nothing if you have microsoft EES agreement but you need to buy firestreamer to get it to work with NAS box. I found backup exec too expensive with all the agents etc.
