Don't really understand why it works but it does - if you have the xerox driver on the virtual printer it does not work yet a user can print direct to a xerox copier using the same xerox driver. As it is working gonna leave it as got other things to work on :-)

Am answering my own question here to help others - if you change the driver on the virtual queues to Papercut global postscript driver then all works ok.

I have got follow me printing working ok to virtual printers which then release to xerox copiers. However it only works for admins. Staff/students it goes through and then says access denied in printer queue unless I add the staff member to domain admins group. Staff/students can print direct to the copiers from same account/machine if they are added but not to the virtual printers. Struggling to see where permissions are different on the virtual and actual printers. Anyone come across this or any ideas? Windows 7 machine to server 2012 R2 print server.

I would say you need four hosts for 20 virtual machines - depends how much memory and disk space you have. Worth having some leeway so you can replicate between hosts in case one host fails. Or you can replicate to older servers as a disaster recovery. Veeam is good - I am only using the free version for disaster recovery and easy backup before doing big upgrades etc.

If you have a Microsoft EES agreement then you might want to consider using hyper v - very cheap - pay for datacenter 2012 and you can install as many virtual servers as you like on that hardware. I have been using hyper v in similar sized school on Dell R710 and R720 with no issues for several years. I would prefer using several hosts rather than SAN as SAN can be very pricey and can also give you a single point of failure unless you have 2 - even more pricey.

have used mainly dell in the past but lost faith a bit - they don't seem interested in education and will try and charge you more for bulk purchases than for one off their website. Also never buy dell vostros - worst bit of kit we have ever had.

we have a lot of 7 and 8 year old laptops which is too old but still keep them going somehow. ipads i think that apple will stop you installing the latest ios in 3 years time which is why people getting rid of perfectly good ipad 1's because they can't run latest apps. keeps apples gold mine running.

paint.net is pretty easy to use for cropping - tend to put it on image though as not easy to roll out

What is the reason for preference? chromebooks we have trialled have been good but not sure about large scale rollout yet.

I think the app installs locally to chromebook over internet -but I don't think they are very large files. We do not use ipads at the moment but if you did all depends on whether one to one or class set - if class set then students would need to logout from drive. We are still mainly windows environment so loads of stuff on home folders and shared drives -i don't think many places have gone totally cloud storage. Apart from bandwidth would cause problems with stuff like access databases, design software etc that would not work well with google drive.

We trialled chromebooks and they worked ok with smoothwall proxy. Management was very good and easy through google control panel - costs £19 per device. Deploy an app and it comes up pretty much straight away. Google support is very good - as well as online diagnostics and FAQs you can speak to techs in Ireland who are helpful. You need some way of getting the work off the ipads especially if they are class sets - google drive would seem a good way to me. Overall I am impressed with google apps - email has been rock solid for last 3 years here and staff now starting to use drive and google classroom more. Not sure whether we are going down the chromebook route but it looks interesting - main problem is accessing existing resources on home folders and shared drive. Chromebooks have taken off in a big way in the US.

Most useful thing we have is a couple of cheap ipods with google translate on - will translate writing and speech.

It is possible to change internal domain name though a bit nerve wracking - did it here ok. If you do so then it would be school holiday time as there is a bit involved cleaning up dns etc.

How many staff use the interactive features at all - a lot of staff just seem to project and never use the interactive bits. In that case a TV from richer sounds might be better. Or you could use a gyro mouse or tablet to walk around the classroom linked to your laptop/PC - interacting without having to stand in front of the screen and blocking the view.

Have been running hyper v for 3 years now with no problems and very straightforward to use. Have upgraded to 2012 R2. datacenter licences cheap on EES and also find veeam free good for extra backups though have enabled replication for vital servers. Not sure how you can criticise it if you have never used it.

I would check with where you get your licences from - there should be something there when you have licences. You can then set device and network settings and see devices when they have enrolled.

can you login to google apps admin console? If so is device management listed and is chrome listed there when you click on it?

I have management console with one device and one licence at the moment for testing. It works well and I would like to go down Chromebook route but it is up to smt - we have a lot of ageing laptops that need replacing at some point. Would be nice to get impero on chromebook if that is what you are looking at :-)

Finally solved it -will answer my own post to help others! Launch RD gateway manager - you also have to change the certificate there despite fact it is already supposedly been changed via server manager. When selected and applied there then all is ok.

Server 2012 R2 rdweb running sims remote app all working ok for the last year - the wildcard certificate expired - unable to renew as company I got from not there any more. Got new wildcard certificate off go daddy - all installed ok and trusted under RD web access, Rd gateway, RD connection broker. Applied the certificates. They are also in personal computer store on the server and the intermediate certificate is installed. Also restarted servers the main RD gateway one and 2 other servers in collection. When browsing to the rdweb site it is still using the old expired certificate? What am I missing? google not providing the answer. Do i need to republish the app? Is there a setting somewhere else I have missed? Any help much appreciated.

As google drive for education accounts now have unlimited space I transfer documents to an archive account before deleting users staff and students just in case - you could have an account for each year. By the end of the year google apps for education should have google vault for free so you can archive email as well.

You can use Windows 7 enterprise and use a usb stick with bitlocker if you have no tpm module. The machine will need the usb stick inserted to allow it to boot so this also acts as another form of security. Recovery passwords are then stored in active directory.
