It was server 2008 32 bit SP2 not R2. sims.net working ok and works as a published application via web page. now need more testing and certificates setting up - looks promising - defintitely going to be cheaper than spending £12.000 on citrix as there is no upgrade path from our current version, cheers Mark

installing sims to c drive - it is the setups and shared sims stuff on mapped drive - mapped to admin server - this is the way it is installed on stations - never had a problem with it - it did install as terminal app but won't find connect ini on mapped drive

Overview - trying to install sims.net on server 2008 R2 32 bit server - want to test using it as an application published on terminal services as we are looking to replace our aged citrix setup. Could not install sims.net due to it not liking the mapped H drive which points to our sims server and where all sims an setups are. Although drive is mapped ok - will stay mapped after login/restart and you can start simsinst from there - when you try and change path for sims shared directories from c to H you cannot see it when you try to browse from the sims setup screen - even though it is there under Computer. Tried just changing letter to H - does not like it - cannot find sims directory on mapped drive. Tried running "install application on a terminal server" - using this it installed sims.net ok and found h drive. However when i launch sims it comes up with locate sims on your system message - looking for connect.ini on C:/sims - you can browse and find conect.ini on H but sims won't launch - relaunching sims prompts you for location of connect.ini file again - looked at sims file in c:\windows and it does say sims directory is H:/sims but it will not find it. Obviously just a problem with mapped drives but i can't find an answer - anybody got any suggestions please ??? Thanks Mark

AVG is great for home. Getting more used to Sophos now - will review options when licence runs out. 2 good things about sophos: console is good application blocking is very useful -e.g. blocking toolbars, proxy programs such as ultrasurf, games etc.

If you use ubuntu on a network - how do you lock it down/control it - whats the equivalent of group policies etc and how easy it to do? - this is more of a stumbling block for schools.

Hi, have done research and looked at threads but still can't see what else i can do to get multicasting working between vlans - unicast works ok. I have bought premium licence for HP 5412 switch and enabled multicast routing. Trying to multicast between two rooms on vlan 6 - have posted config of switches below - if anyone can spot anything obvious please let us know -running out of ideas. Hi, installed on 40 machines but got another 20 laptops to do. Failry high spec rack server - runs all our shared apps on there. I made administrative images ok but they would not work from the html link they tell you to run - never got round to contacting solidworks as i decided to just do manual install. The install is about 4GB and the update is another 2GB if you download it - apparently need fairly high spec stations but seems to run on ours ok which are not that good - though kids not started using it yet - just updating mandatory profile to include this.

Installed the licence server with dongle on server - then have to put in server location when installing to client e.g. 25734@yourserver. Copied contents of DVD to a shared location so could run several installs at once.

Hi, had problems with this - ended up doing a manual install but i have not so many machines to do as you. If you get the administrative image to work then this is supposed to install run from a command - you could script this to run. I tried administrative images but gave up trhough lack of time - they would start to run but then fail.

I recommend AD Bulk Users from Dovestones - you have to buy it but it is not too expensive. You can create or edit bulk users and create home folders with the correct permssions.

If it is a service hanging then you can troubleshoot by running safe mode with networking and then try enabling/desiabling services - we had a problem similar to this caused by Sophos

Good practice to change admin passwords - but just be careful on what services depend on what user account or you find services stopping and throwing a spanner in the works. Need to map out physical layout of switches if not documented - took me ages here - tyr procurve manager if you have HP switches -can use on free trial initally, chhers Mark

Hi, been researching this but tried everything to no avail- my brain hurts so i am appealing for help! Got HP 5412zl core switch and testing vlans for use in the summer when i am going to create seperate vlans/subnets. Setup a new vlan called printers on 192.168.2.* range with IP address of 192.168.2.1 - setup new scope with 192.168.2.0 range - 192.168.2.1 is the default gateway for this scope - authorised and running. IP helper address of 10.56.132.8 (our dhcp server) is set in this vlan but it will not issue any addresses. I had this working before issuing addresses ok but had incorrectly set IP addresses for the new vlans on the other switches not realising they only need to be set on the core switch so deleted vlans and set up new ones. I do not know what has changed to stop it working - if I set a fixed address to laptop e.g. 192.168.2.2 with gateway of 192.168.2.1 then can connect from 192 to 10.56 network ok including dhcp server - so IP routing working ok. Any ideas wlecome! - do not know whether there is a problem in scope - but worked ok before and no error messages in event log or dhcp trffic not being forwarded - but why?
