With embc we got them to setup a different filtering group for staff - so when they login to the embc portal they get different filtering levels - don't know whether swgfl can do same. If you force all students through your own proxy you can slow down internet access if you are not careful as machines connect to multiple proxy servers at internet providers, cheers mark

Does your head understand what a GPO is? Does she not realise that without locking things down your students can not only wreck the setup of machines but also install anything leaving your network open to destruction?

Installed sharepoint services 3.0 - server 2003/IIS - set up a team site - got it working ok -internal and external - prompts for username/password and can access ok. But I thought it should go straight into site without prompting for username/password when a user logs on to a machine in the domain or am I mistaken? Am using kerberos authentication - had some problems - when application pool was set to network service it would not authenticate in Internet Explorer even when putting username/password in but would in firefox. Changed application pool identity to a domain admin and ran setspn to authenticate this account. Now works in internet explorer with domain\username login but won't login automatically? Cheers Mark

Have you changed anything on the network? Do you know for sure it is corrupt profiles - I have had logoff issues caused by sophos and also login caused by scripts looking for missing shares - check event viewer on stations/profile server for clues, cheers Mark

After a power outage our smoothwall corporate firewall box won't load up - this is the link between admin and curriculum so is causing major problems. Get dev/hardisk3 contains a file system with errors - check forced. then get unexpected inconsistency and says run fsck manually - tried that but no joy. Not really too sure about linux commands. Is there anything i can do to repair or do i have to reinstall and try and remember configuration? How do i reinstall - get a cd and boot from usb cd drive as there is no cd drive built in? any advice appreciated, Mark

Don't forget warranties - you have to pay extra for 3 year apple care otherwise you are stuck with one year and have to send them off to apple when they break - can be expensive.

Somrtimes you can buy cheaper through a reseller rather than direct with dell believe it or not - get a couple of quotes.

Hi, have searched for solution on net with no joy. Testing using trustnoexe and working ok - looks useful. But it is blocking group policy logon and logoff scripts in paths such as: \\wvcc.leics.sch.uk\sysvol\wvcc.leics.sch.uk\policies\{d4884ecd-6438-4d25-9bfc-ac59f430d02d}\user\scripts\logoff Have tried adding this path into access list and also \\servername\sysvol but it is still blocking them. Anyone come across this problem? - can add other server paths in ok. Thanks Mark

Regarding internet bans - we have setup smoothwall with limited user licences - anyone on a ban is forced through that proxy rather than the regular one and then can only access a limited allowed list of sites such as vle etc. This allows students to work still but not use rest of the internet.

Check sims.net version number - latest is 7.114 - had problems upgrading to this with some stuck on 7.112. Had to run simsapplicationsetup on some to install.

Joomla is good for intranet and can be used for school website as well. Trouble is school website is a brochure for your school and should look professional - it is not that easy for someone is not trained as a graphic designer to do this but if senior management won't listen then you have to do best you can. Hi, can't answer specific but there are a lot of problems getting office 2007 to install via msi/group policy. Microsoft recommend manual install or as part of your machine image unless you have Microsoft SMS. This is a pain - I have tried auto rollout at previous college with lots of problems - now got to do it again at new school over summer. Cheers Mark

Tip - an easy way to reboot overnight - set a scheduled task to run say 4.00am to run shutdown.exe (found in system32 folder) but do shutdown.exe -r this restarts rather than shutting down.

If you have impero you can run a report to see what is being used - mainly just internet and office last time I checked! Mark

Noticed in event logs a lot of MSFTPSVC system events with The server was unable to logon the Windows NT account 'test' due to the following error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. Also the same with user administrator. Eventually we got a timeout message for IP address 222.35.138.117 – putting this into google comes up with CHINA RAILWAY TELECOMMUNICATIONS CENTER and warnings about hackers! Have now disabled the ftp publishing service on this server - not sure why it was enabled anyway and warned embc internet providers about the IP address. Posting as a warning for others if you have ftp service enabled. Cheers Mark

Tracked it down to sophos - as soon as i disabled and stopped sophos everything was fine - although why it affected only 3 rooms when others had same configuration and version of sophos i don't know. After raising a call with sophos they suggested disabling scanning remote files which is on by default - did this and everything is ok. Thanks to edugeek for putting me on right track yet again, Mark
