  1. Hello Everyone; No WINS on the network at all im afraid, NT4 machines do need extra permissions set but these are XP machines on the NT4 Domain
  2. Hello I have already set Option 015 for the domain name and DNS is set to use unsecure updates. Adam
  3. Hello Everyone; I've got a bit of a unique situation here maybe someone can shed some light on it for me. I have a windows NT4 domain (yes yes it needs to be burnt but is tided into some business stuff that really should also be burnt...) called BD. I have some windows XP clients of this domain. I also have a Windows 2008 R2 DC with DHCP\DNS running; so here is the strange issue Windows XP client set to use DHCP gets an address and attempts to register it's self in DNS it does its PTR record just fine but does not create a forward lookup record. When i look at the PTR record it reports the data as machinename. with no domain attached. Does anyone know how i can make these clients report a domin when they register in DNS? Thanks any pointers adam
  4. Hello Everyone, I've got a really old server here running Windows NT 4... I'm trying to shift everything off of it in quick order however it is still used for authentication, does anyone know a way to see which security groups are being used? Thanks .Adam
  5. We have 2 new gateway devices which act in a cluster, so both need to be connected to our internet gateway Cisco (direct connection to BT, no LA filtering etc). I need to test and conf. these devices before we go live with them so the swich has to split the incomming connection 3 ways, 1 to the existing gateway and 2 to the new gateways. We have a /28 for our public IP's so each device is on a different public IP. The Switch in question is a HP ProCurve 1810G-24 J9450A using the most upto date firmware which i beleave is 2.2 oh yes and speeds have been locked down on the ports to 100Full
  6. Hello Everyone, I've set up a ProCurve 1810 to sit inbertween my internet connection any my internal networks gateway. I've assigned ports 1 - 4 to be part of a VLAN and attached our internet router and our gateway to two of these ports. This is in preperation for a new gateway that is going in. However when in this configuration Active FTP (not pasive) and IPSec traffic seams to get blocked\dropped. Plug the internet straight back into our gateway and all returns to normal. anyone ever seen this before?

    Induction...

Well I’ve spent my first 3 days moving from pillar to post visiting every department in my new workplace watching (and even trying my hand) at almost every job in the company. I’ve seen how everyone interacts with IT and what it means to them in there day to day job. Its given me a good idea of where the issues lie and what are going to be the little day to day issues that I might have to sort out. Now how many of you had an induction like that? Do you think that going and seeing key people in your school and how they use systems would have helped you in your early days?
  8. Well I've landed my self a new job out in the private sector starting on Monday. If working in schools has tought me anything it's that things are almost not what they appear to be, and that stupidity if often the cause of many issues. I'm hoping that this new post will be slightly less of the stupid and allow me to get down to some productive rather than fire fighting work. I've been hanging around here since my first mentor introduced edugeek to me way back in 2007 (ok not that way back, but it feels like it), and it's been a really useful resource. Back then the site was aimed at the Educational IT Tech, it's been good to see that we are now not just a community for education but also for the wider community. I for one will be hanging around. As part of my move i'm going to blog my experience of moving into the 'real world' and see what lessons can be learnt and feed back to education. Who knows it might even be interesting....
