Yes I didn't quite phrase that right. Deploystudio helps you create a net-bootable image. OS X server has a NetBoot facility. I found that that profile manager was a bit flakey at delivery profiles. But to be fair we did have another Network issue causing chronicly slow network traffic.

Put one of these in and it's been nothing but trouble. The company Oki used for repairs were useless too. The replacement is okay but they feel cheap too. Used to love the older oki colour lasers - until they got very expensive to run.

I've come to the conclusion that open directory and profile manager are awful. I've mainly abandoned them in the last month. I use an AppleScript to log on, find the shares in the server to mount. I've installed Munki to deploy updates - so far only flash but I'm looking to expand that. Finally i strongly recommend deploystudio to deploy your master image. It will let you take an image of your master then NetBoot your clients to deploy that master. You can rename / add to the domain on the same workflow. I've been using macs a while but deploystudio and munki were brand new to me but easy to understand / implement.

Indeed. I should stress I'm just around here - and have been for years - as a techy and to share knowledge. With regards to cloud - it's a pretty generic term really. It's on a computer somewhere - whether that's on school, a data centre or even a bedroom

We (the company I work for) developed our own cloud based filtering app. So it's defo possible. Current version aimed at primary schools and we'll be looking for a full roll out imminently. At which point I may be able to become a registered advertiser/ sponsor of EduGeek and actually give details. But it is possible with VM's / data centres / talented web developers and open source software.

I'll often have targeted gpp's these days so internet settings would be for all users - but targeted to groups - staff, pupils, admin etc. I am sometimes guilty on having gpo's ghat only have one function. But they are more 'legacy' these days as I try to tidy them up. I agree that a balance between not having too many but not being too generic is best

They keep putting my limit UP! We have a cash back one, use it for EVERYTHING and pay it off every month. (We're supposed to pay it off as it goes on - but that doesn't always happen - always at the end of the month though) So we get .5 to 1% cash back on everything. Not a huge amount but better than nowt.

I'm a huge mac fan - but in my experience they can be a PITA with touch screens - although it normally comes down to poor or non existent drivers from the manufacturers. Whether that's due to apple policies and frameworks I'm not sure. However, you might try adding in a usb2 powered hub between screen and MacBook Air if the ports are USB3. I've found I needed to do this for a MBP on an iiyama screen.

Seems you'd only need a midspan if you had heavy power requirements. I would imagine in most cases a PoE switch would be okay

Installed mine at the top of the stairs. The cable goes straight into the loft and my PoE switch up there. While my virgin router wireless did a tremendous job from its living room base, with the AC-lite I get full coverage in every room of the house and the back garden. Good stuff. We use them at work and mine is on our cloud controller - so I can see how much data goes through it. I was surprised how much we use!

Also had this issue today on some machine. Pretty sure our very is sha2 though.

I'm not a pro but I use SmugMug for my photos. It's designed for more pro users so I'm happy with my photos and vids going there. No worries about storage constraints and it's got a reasonable way to share with family.

They weren't originally free but did start with certain devices. I think back in 2013! But as above you had to claim them with invoice proof from Apple on some cases. Annoyingly one of our schools just bought ~30 pages licenses.

I've just reset the sa password for one of our schools that still use the LA For support. Not sure how it is in your setup but I googled and found a command line to reset sa password. The answer was within edugeek!

We've used them in primary schools. No issues yet with them. Although quite often they're coming from 10/100 dumb switches. Even hubs in some cases!

I'm sure I read a report somewhere (El Reg?) that 'business' ssd's have very little over 'consumer' class in speed and reliability. But as above. If you have backups, perhaps redundancy and it's not mission critical then go for it.
