If you document the issues someone might be able to help you fix them. We have loads of Unifi switches and zero problems.

[bromcom] BROMCOM and 2 Factor Authentication 2FA
Primus replied to kennysarmy's topic in MIS Systems
If you need MFA for security (which you do) then whitelisting IPs seems nonsensical - a huge vector for attack is students watching staff type in usernames and passwords so excluding your PCs onsite from MFA limits its success. -
There's luck and then there's 10 years without a single Internet drop - how many times have you also won the lottery?!
-
Wow, you could replace them all with Unifi devices for less per device than the 3 year Meraki licence!
-
I mean I agree but come on - not a single outage in 10 years? Seems highly unlikely.

iPads Legality of Ownership means unrestricted access?
Primus replied to WestCoastCumbria's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Wait till they're coming in with smashed iPads or insurance claims where their story makes no sense! -
iPads Legality of Ownership means unrestricted access?
Primus replied to WestCoastCumbria's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Did you not have an agreement the parents signed before paying/taking possesion of the iPad? -
On the flipside a nice clean image every year gets rid of the crud that inevitably builds up.
-
Yes MS have been quite clear on what they think should use LTSC and it's not the PCs we're using in schools for general purpose work.
-
Yes as others have said you can fully manage updates and when they apply using WSUS or SCCM.
-
But as mentioned your staff and students won't be using Windows 7 at home and probably not for quite some time so they're already used to the new UI.
-
Of course there's more than one way to do things but you're moving backwards to a GUI that students and staff will not use anywhere else, the new start menu is what they will be used to now since they'll be using it at home and will have been for some time!
-
Guys, it's time to let go, it's ok you can be brave and move forwards to the GUI that has been around for over 5 years now...
-
But where and when do you stop? I can understand initially if you'd moved to Windows 10 when it had only recently launched but we're now 5 years on. Obviously there's a way to manage change and you do want to avoid too many changes at once but by now we shouldn't be bending the UI back to a product that launched in 2009.
-
Those of you who are making the start menu look like Win7 aren't there any concerns that it now looks so different to what users will see at home and elsewhere? The UI has moved on at some point users need to adapt.

Unless you're using a policy that disables the computer account after a certain amount of time without an authentication then a normal client device wouldn't lose the domain trust simply by being off for a while or outside of the network - they don't tombstone like a DC that was offline would.

Smart Notebook 2012 - MDT Deployment Silent Command
Primus replied to SiDr0id's topic in Educational Software
Since they announced 11.4 will no longer activate now I’m doubtful they’ll supply the installer.- 10 replies

I'd suggest creating a new thread - people who can help you who have Sophos firewalls aren't always going to drop into a post that has the subject with Smoothwall in it.

[bug/error] Site is pushing to HTTP
Primus replied to CyBeRkId2002's topic in EduGeek.net Site Problems
I appreciate it can be a lot of work, but there are many good reasons why sites have moved to HTTPS for everything - saying the log ins are handled securely is missing the point. This site should be a model of good practice - the move to get everything onto HTTPS is not exactly new. -

Still a total joke this site is stuck on HTTP -
[sims] Capita is trying to sell off non-core businesses (SIMS is for sale)
Primus replied to psydii's topic in MIS Systems
The most I can get as the site @PhilNeal references has a paywall is: Exclusive: Private equity houses vie for stake in enlarged competitor to Capita SIMS spawned by merger of rival providers A trio of private equity firms are competing for a minority stake in an entity that will be formed by a merger of two UK-based school management information system (MIS) providers, Arbor Education and The Key. Funny as I’ve experienced zero niggles. Zero APs needing rebooting etc. I still think people are incredibly dismissive of Unifi without properly considering it and some of this definitely comes down to resellers trying time and time again by hook or by crook to push people to much more expensive solutions.
-
I do find these threads interesting - I'm not interested in vendors answering this but fellow education IT managers and technicians - what features does Unifi not have on the WiFi side that led you away from them? Similarly what bugs/issues have you encountered (some referenced this)? I'm genuinely interested since when we did our comparison 2 years ago Unifi checked every single box and was so much cheaper it was incredible really. Since then we've never had a moment where we regretted going with Unifi for our WiFi and PoE switching - a year later we added a load more of their none-PoE 48 ports and the money we saved at the edge allowed us to up-spec the core.
-
We’ve got circa 100 Ubiquiti Unifi APs and around 45 of their 48 port switches. We’ve had zero issues. It all just works as expected and was so much cheaper it was a no-brainer.

Forcing a change of password every 60 days not only makes it hard for the user to remember it but it leads to them using weaker passwords and potentially writing them down on sticky notes attached to the monitor etc. Forcing password expiry after a certain number of days is no longer best security practice and hasn't been for some time. There is simply no justification for CPOMS forcing this especially given the MFA required usage.
