I don't have experience with LDAP - are you sending them to Moodle with course creator role in LDAP? If not, then they will all have the authenticated user role in Moodle until you assign them a role in a course/category or (rare occasions) site wide. Which permissions of a student did you edit?Is this a local install or is it online? If online, I 'm happy to take a look for you.

Ok -well - can you give a few more details about which "permissions" you have been altering? For example course creators should be assigned to a category and they can only create courses within that category - have you done anything over and above that? The MRBS block does involve some editing of permissions -iirc -giving a front page role to the people you want to use it - haven't played with if for a couple of years but the instructions for that should be with its download at moodle.org

If you want to use CSV the fields are username password email firstname lastname course1 group1 where course1 is the shortname of the course you want to enrol them in and group1 is the group you want to enrol them in. The alternative you mention is group enrolment key - look at this post here Moodle Blog

have a CSV file and go to site admin>users>accounts>upload users and there will be a browse box for you to upload your file to -then Moodle will do the rest. Make sure you have the correct fields - if you want to upload them straight into a course then you need username,password,firstname,lastname,email,role,course1 where role is student and course1 is the shortname of the course you want to enrol them into

afaik if you just upload a powerpoint Moodle will simply offer for you to download it - what about if she uploads to slideboom (which maintains animations) and embeds that? Just a thought.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by build a Moodle module that gives a grammar tip every day - you can do this already by inputting tips into a glossary and then adding the random glossary block which will show a new tip every day. Or did you want your grammar tip to come as an RSS feed? I suppose a workaround would be to put a tip a day into a Moodle forum, switch on RSS on your Moodle and then add the feed to an RSS block in Moodle.Or build your own RS (I just copied mine from a template online) upload somewhere and link from that But I am only suggesting these alternatives as I don't know any coding to make a proper module, sorry:)

Hi there. I don't know anything about sql to help get rid of it (not much help sorry!) but it might be worth investigating the cause - there are several occasions where this might occur -pasting word processed characters that then don't display properly in certain browsers (like FF for example) or issues with utf8/latin database inconsistency. It might be worth doing a search on mooodle.org to see if anything matches your ocurrences.

I don't think it is but I'm happy to be proved wrong; hopefully someone else has a better idea. The basic Moodle blog's a bit rubbish really, isn't it? The fact that it's attached to a profile and not a course means you can only have the one blog - not a problem for small primaries but no good for us in secondary as you couldn't have a, say, French blog and an English blog. Has she thought of an individual forum?

[@secretlife Just been looking at the quia online system - looks really good, can create central classes very quickly and great reporting features. It looks very out of the box working! I think we will give this a try in the intrum of setting up a moodle box, it may be that quia offers the perm solution. Ben - I started on Quia about ten years ago before we got Moodle - it is good - I moved away from it recently as Moodle does a lot of this but Quia is still good;worth a look.

Hotpotatoes - totally free. Put it on moodle and it will record the scores or else (I belive) they have their own site you can upload to as well. Quia is good too - have to pay but it was cheap last time I looked

Did you by any chance switch on "external database" in site admin>courses>enrolments? This can bring up this error if it's enabled but not configured.

seriously - I agree with the moodle forum idea - much simpler to set up and contained within one course in moodle (moodle blogs cant' be commented on anyway and are attached to user profile not a course) We do this every year with y6 and y7 - set up a course and a forum -enrol current y7 and y6 and they can ask and get responses to questions. Teachers can subscribe and get emails when something is posted so it's easy to moderate. As far as training goes -there's nothing really to train - pupils will learn it in seconds -as long as the forum is set up by you in advance it takes a couple of minutes to show teacher how to moderate /edit/delete anything unsuitable.

Also - on the CLEO moodle forums Dan Poltawski mentioned it did actually say (quote again) One key feature is that anyone who holds an administrator account on your school Moodle will be promted to change their password the first time they log in after the upgrade. so we were warned. I understand your feelings about it being better to run your own install FN_GM - it is frustrating at times when you want to do additional stuff and can't -but on the other hand I very much appreciate having someone else carry the load of doing the upgrades/security patches etc. I think CLEO are doing a very good job. (no I don't work for them; I teach children(some of whom are adults!)

so...Fun Stuff for children AND Moodle? two of my favourite things - (after alcohol and chocolate) so I have just counted myself in:)

Is this a CLEO Moodle? ( I just tried in one and it worked) If it isn't -then what version is it and have you tried with a different theme? Have you looked at the source code in the label to see if it is doing something funny?

Try downloading a load of users you already have as csv (in bulk user actions) and then using that csv file as your base for your new one -that way you know the format is correct (because I agree it sometimes has issues with "" I 've made them in Excel saved as csv; it hasn't worked and when I've opened up in notepad it's because it had extra "") However -that behaviour gives a different error message from a 404 so I don't think it would be that. DO you want to send a sample csv file so one of us could check it works (or doesn't) on our Moodles?

Is he doing it straight from the moodle html editor? Not copying and pasting from Word? Which webbrowser?
