Ask the LEA, When we became an academy we technicaly had NO RIGHT to our predecessor data, we archived the data and gave it to them on CD. That covered that base. Technicaly thought we had a Virtual machine which was switched off with the old MIS lying dormant in case we needed it. Good job realy as the LEA lost the CD! if you need the data then 1 or 2 is the only real option... But as your already in battle for 2013 option 2 would require reconstruction of new data from the new year.. So option 1 is probbaly more favourable. You could get a second DIRTY SIMS build with all the previous data but capita will charge you for that too, last experince was that it would cost the same as the running live build. Building your own front end to the data will cost more than the other options.. Rob

I doubt an export to a spreadshet or three would be easy. If you have ever seen the SIMS database backend table set you will know that these MIS's have very very complex relational database structures that would be possible to recreate in a spreadsheet but it would be too complex to be of use and the cost would be silly. I don't think that SERCO have done anything out of the ordianry, you have decided to leave them so it is up to you and your new provider to make sure the data is transfered to a new repository. In this case you did not want that wholsale and so data remains in a system that your no longer leagly entitled to use. Your not in a strong bargaining position either. Four choices realy. 1) Pay them for a year or more.... 2) Get capita to do the work again porting all data 3) take the database tables and build your own front end to the data you need 4) forget the old data. Unless you have a shead load of data $4K will get you a very very long way. I specced a Dual Xeon e5-2600 32G ram and a couple of TB of disk space for that last week for a shade under £4K and that was to be a virtual server hypervisor. Could easily run a fistfull of virtual hosts. So realy you need to look at how much data there is and how much is beeing shoveled arround at any one time. TT

Good old system the 150, we moved on 5 years ago. We had looked at HIPATH from Simens but went to a full new cisco deploymnet. There are many other Hybrid systems out ther from Avaya, Samsung, etc. and many pure IP systems like the Cisco's You normaly have the server that handles call management ( but not the actual call traffic ) the handsets VOIP station licences ( a gotcha for many ) and line cards to connect to the telephone network. Ideally voice traffic should be on it's own network for call quality, this could either be a physicaly seperate or using vlans. You can't use Cat3 bell wire so will either have to have new network points installed or if your network supports it use the vlans and passthrough port on the phone as mentioned above ( if it has one ). If you want something as reliable as the Hicom should be ( I doubt it's 25 years old mode like 18 at most ) then you need a proper solution. There are free call management options such asa 3CX and Astrix(free pbx) both do come with comercial support if you want to go down that route. Next up the cost scale would be Something like a Samsung Officeserv Hybrid. the Cisco UC500 is a gr8 little phone system too and bridges between the likes of the above and full blown enterprise systems liek our own Cisco Unified Communications Manager ( scalable to 70'000 users , it was somewhat over spec! ) Rob

DR Plan DR Tests Redundacny Plan check all network devices NTP , PWD, email, syslog, etc are configured. Probably much more, our helpdesk trots along between 450-550 open tickets between the four of us. We take and clear ~200 a week, although the first 3 weeks of term were closer to 300! we have lots of projects on the burners to keep us busy for years. Rob

first of all I would query your ability to count, you say you have 4 printers but list 3 Can you ping the printer? Can you get to the web interface from your smart phone? Does the print stay in the queue? Is it all 3 ( 4 if there is a mystery one ) printers or just one? Any errors in the event log? Does it only happen when your on WIFI on the computer? What if you connect on a lan cable? Rob

We used to do indoor ParCout, but diving off desks and doing a roll usualy ended in pain. We used to do Hard Disk Platter Spinning ( spare platters blue tacked to a drive spindle and powered on) 15K drives are the best. The best was "TUB of screws" where a tub of screws (PC case/drive etc) would be strategicaly placed on a colleaugs chair/desk/etc so that it will fall of at the slightest movement. But the last time We did it , the tub was found next morning on the centre of the desk. The cleaner had falen prey of our set up (OOOPS). We ocasionaly just forgo the hiding element and just tiped it over someones desk, or better still someone. they were the fun times in our office whent we needed to keep our spirits up .
