We are on Pay-per-print service contract. If you go this rout, get multiple quotes, check all the terms and conditions, check everything inside, outside underneth the carpet and mak 100% sure your happy tith the contract and it's SLA's. Find out how many engineers are in the area to service the devices. Rob

We use DPM, would rather find a better solution as it uses VSC for the disk-2-disk backup which has a maximum of 64 backups which is fairly pants as we want 3 a day for 4 months not 2 a day for a month! It tends to work ok until it breaks and then it seems to take a day of trying to creat new restore points and sync jobs to get it to work again on a particular server. We have SMTP working fine on ours, although I recall there bing a bug in the configuration screen. Rob

we use a fostex spa11 for easy portability. even after 15 years and one blown driver it's still loud. You may want 2-3 to spread the volume down the space without deafaning the front row.

In Theory ( last time I did this was ~8 years ago ) Your original subnet is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.1.254 ( bcast 192.168.1.255 ) Your new subnet will be 192.168.0.1 -192.168.3.254 ( bcast 192.168.3.255 ) If you change you change a server mask to /22 it can still arp broadcast to all hosts in the new subnet (bcast on 192.168.3.255). and so long as you keep it's IP in the original portion of the subnet, other hosts should be able to arp broadcast to it on 192.168.1.255. the key is to keep all hosts in the original subnet range until all the work is done. and to make 150% sure that 192.168.1.255 is not put into a DHCP scope. It's easy enough to test. Just get a server or client your not worried about. Change the mask and check it can ping. However, I would seriously look at splitting up the network into smaller broadcast domains by sticking a L3 switch between the network and the Lightspeed (I guess this is transparent?) and gettign some vlan routing going on. The recomended no of hosts per broadcast domain is 510 as in a /23 subnet. Which is where your at. Depending on your traffic and how many extra hosts there are doublign to a /22 may be a bad idea. Rob

Your looking at about £6 per year per printer for it sleeping. A full power down and restart ( without sleep ) may actualy use more energy overall. The bursar needs to look elsewhere. Rob

who looks after your ISP router, do you use an internal proxy and block all other outbound traffic. What is your current network subnet? simply changing the mask on all devices or via DHCP will give you more headroom. it can be done without downtime. Rob

We used a mobotix hi-res cctv camera for our time laps covering the demolishion of the old school and building of the new. We actualy had two for different angles. they were set up to write a picture to an ftp server ( one each ) every 10 minuets, and then replicate between the two servers to protect the images in case of failure. As for the Performing arts center, expect the cost to serverly restrict any grand plans. Ours was built in 2005 and sadly the theatre is not much more than a hall with raised retractable seating, some curtains ( no stage ) and a not fantastic lighting rig. Fortunatly with LED multicolour lighting technologies things have moved on in the last 10 years so you can get a gr8 desk, lamps and have a super array of colour options without having mechanical colour changers or running up ladders! We use AMI easytrace to produce cards for students. It has a script that updates Paxton NET2 with users and puts them into groups but it's partly broken as the security levels don't automaticaly apply. Altman pcounter allows users to login with their network account and then assign their card to them. Oliver updates directly from Easytrrace. Traka lockers get user/card automatical and sort of work but there is no granularity of access. Catering is direct from easytrace. Our experince is that if you want a system to work seamlessley and properly then you have to define it in cast IRON before you sign up a contract. Lets get on with building the new fission reactors and stop messing about with small scale supposedly green systems like Solar and Wind. My server was a old Dell Dimension 3000, that got P2V'd to an old stone quad core jobbie with 8gb ram. I used to have a cisco lab of various routes and switches but it took up too much space so sold it on. And I can do most of it anyway now.
