Adobe Photoshop v Serif Affinity Photo + staff usage
hallb15 replied to DrBeaker's topic in Enterprise Software
Some people are just resistant to change and you'll never change their minds. Others may be a bit vocal about it but if they are shown how to use the new software for 30 mins they realise it's not that hard. We use paint.net here for those that want to edit photos. There aren't that many that do though as we are a primary school, but it's easy enough to use that you can show someone the basics and they can pick up the rest via google. -
For that price i'd give @ICTDirect_Dave a call.

I use https://cbccomputers.com/ for all laptop spares. If they can't supply it then I usually end up on ebay.

96GB which is plenty for the 4 VMs we run on it.

I wasn't expecting any socks, thought I'd missed the deadline but I was handed a pair this morning by one of our admin staff. I got the nice purple ones. Thanks @VeryPC -
I've always been a fan of HP. We have an HP ML350p Gen 8. It's 5 years old so no plans to replace it for at least another two years yet. What's wrong with yours that makes you want to replace it? If you speak to a reputable supplier and tell them your requirements they should be able to suggest what spec you should consider to make sure you get the longest life out of it. Then post their suggestions on here for us to pick apart!

We use CDM from iamcloud. Took a bit of fiddling to setup, but it does work well. Support is very good too. The hardest part now is getting staff to use it.

That's interesting as we've had a much better experience with BioStore support. Yes, there have been issues, particularly in the beginning, but these were sorted out in a timely fashion and now we rarely have an issue. We are a primary school, so don't use the cashless catering features, only using FasTrak for meal choices in the mornings and taking the register in the afternoon. ParentPay support on the other hand, their support is dreadful. Thankfully though, we are aware of the common issues and know how to fix them ourselves. We have a sync tool installed on the SIMS server, which updates to BioStore Fastrak installed on our apps server overnight. If necessary we can run a manual update.

Broadband and Filtering

We're with Exa using their Surfprotect Quantum for filtering and a Unifi gateway for firewall/routing. -
I've just moved to PlusNet after being with Virgin Media for donkeys years. So far everything has gone well. Installed on time and getting much faster connection than their guaranteed minimum. Fingers crossed I won't need to contact customer services!

If you run it from the start menu folder it does - its a bit messy though I agree.

Do you mean more than just typing dir /s >filelist.txt at the command prompt?

For testing the CPU I've used https://www.cpuburnin.com/ for years. You need to run it for each CPU core on the machine - e.g. run4 instances simultaneously on a quad core CPU. It certainly gets things nice and hot!

Rust/Corrosion are likely causes of the failures. If not dried out properly, even the 'good' units could fail later due to delayed corrosion. I would definitely want to see a copy of the report the testing company did. Your SBM should be contacting the insurance company as they need to know whoever they've contracted to test the units has passed potentially dangerous equipment. Your PAT testing company will have issued a report-use that as leverage. Send one of the PAT failed ones to bigclive.com hopefully he'll dissect it and then we can all see what happened and be better informed for future water damage incidents!

We use Tapestry in Early Years and on the whole it is a great product. Staff love the ease of logging observations, including photos and videos of children in action, completing various targets etc. Parents have controlled access to their child's observations so can see how they are progressing. This includes access to photos and videos that have been uploaded to their child's Tapestry profile. Within the Tapestry settings there is an option to disable downloads so that parents can't download photos or videos from their child's profile. However, disabling downloads only removes the download button. There's nothing to stop the parent from right-clicking and downloading the photo or video. Most photos and videos taken in the classroom will have more than one child in, especially videos as children - particularly in Early Years - do not keep still. So despite the best efforts of the staff taking the image, there will be children clearly viewable who aren't the focus of the observation. So a parent could easily right-click and save a file to send to a relative and then its outside our control what happens to it next. Has anyone else noticed this? We will be reporting it to Tapestry today and I'll update here with their response.

What @Arthur said. I've done this several times and it works. Just take your time and follow the instructions carefully.
