DNS Crashed, Sharepoint no longer loads
Psymon replied to Psymon's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
No way, i tried that yesterday and it didnt work so i deleted the record again thinking it was too simple. Thanks for your help! The only other wierd thing is (due to a single external and internal dns name) i cant access our outlook web access from internal (same DNS name) https://mail.domain.org.uk/exchange Externally fine, internally i get a website not found. (just thought an A record pointing to our external IP should do the job) Sorry for 2 questions in 1 post Si -
DNS Crashed, Sharepoint no longer loads
Psymon replied to Psymon's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
as in sharepointname.domain.org.uk point to the server ip addy? and the live sharepoint site is called DCNet and is running. -
DNS went tits up the other day and after reacreating the zones ive had problems with the sharepoint site. MIS came back up fine, outlook web access still works, outlook started working once the MX record was created etc... however our sharepoint site has the following page when loading straight from IIS with right click -> browse (attatched) Anyone seen this before? Hi! Got a bizarre problem. We recently changed all of our printer deployment methods from logon-script to 2003R2 Printer Management /w Group Policy (The push printer exe route) this has allowed us to control the default printing settings better, update drivers easier etc... However, the bizarre problem is the following - Default settings are to Duplex with Top-Binding (Accounts department need this) and this works fine with the accounts package, word 2003, internet explorer etc.... HOwever, when in Excel, if we then want to print a single-sided 3 pages, we choose "1 sided" from the driver settings, and it still decides to duplex with top binding, dispite other programs (accounts package and word) obeying the single-sided orders from the driver. Anyone seen this before? Thanks in advance. Si

From previous experience it just visibly locks up, if you check the process it is still working hard. Gapless playback is for things where song 1 mixes into song 2 seamlessly, you dont want itunes putting a 1 second gap in there for you. This "lockup" also happens when you try to drag 10+ songs into a playlist, my pc is a Dual core 3Ghz, 4Gb 1066mhz RAM etc... and it even does it on that for about 3-4 seconds. Si

We keep all leaver personal storage areas on a NAS drive, keep the account in AD (Disabled) for 1year, then remove (along with mailbox). The data is kept on the backup drive indefinately at current, once space is tight on the NAS we will start cycling it. Si

Been having an issue recently where once the user has logged on, they are sat staring at a black screen for ages. This problem turns out to be caused by printer drivers. The user will recieve a UAC prompt that asks for admin permission to install drivers, however it doesnt appear, and the user it helpless. We have solved it in the ICT Suite (temporarily) by logging in as admin and installing the drivers the 1st time, from then on its not an issue. Going to look into deploying all the printers via group policy to stop it re-occuring. Just an FYI Si

Turned out the initial cause of the problem, and continuing existance problem was a IP Phone with a switch built in. Someone had plugged the PoE into the phone, and instead of plugging there laptop into the 2nd port, they plugged it back into the wall and it grinded the network to a halt. The phone was DHCP'ing and im guessing the switch went mental as it wasnt an avoidable "im plugged into myself" problem which was what caused the server to get strained by a large amount of requests and eventually fall over. Still, was a good opertunity to migrate to a 2008 DC, and its all good now. Worst 3 days ever Psy

Had a long 2 days Here goes. On Wednesday morning, DNS stopped working on one of the domain controllers, instead of sitting and reinstalling it, we had planned to migrate the DC away from this server, and onto a 2008 DC we had installed in the summer. So i took the opportunity to make it into the PDC for the domain, and in turn demote the 2003R2 server that was failing. As we had installed the 2008DC in the summer, the ADPrep ForestPrep etc... Were all completed then. Our setup (after adding the 2008 DC in the summer) was as follows 2003 R2 Primary DC (80% DHCP Scope) 2003 R2 Backup DC (20% DHCP Scope) (Dying Server) 2008 DC (No DHCP) The intention was to make the 2008 Server the new PDC, so whilst everything was going wrong anyway, we took the opportunity to move the 80% scope to the 2008 DC, and make the non-dying server a BDC with 20% of the addresses I did it in the following order Transfer the DHCP scopes from the dying DC to the 2008 DC Switch the “exclusion” ranges so that the 2008 server had 80% of the addresses available and the existing PDC had 20% Transferred the FOSM roles from the 2003 PDC to the new 2008 DC Made sure “Global Catalogue” was on the old 2003 PDC before decommissioning the dying server with dcpromo Changed the IP Helper addressed for each VLAN on the Core switch to reflect the 2008 DC and the 2003 DC that remained. Since then the main admin network (plugged directly into the core switch) works fine, and the ICT Centre on one of the VLAN’s works fine. I’ve tested 3 of the other VLAN’s / SubNet’s and I’m having no luck getting an IP address at all when plugging into the switch. Ports are still untagged to the relevant VLAN they belong too; all that’s changed is the DHCP server Changed all the scope options to reflect the DNS are now 2008PDC and 2003BDC. Any ideas? Psy

Computer Products Ltd Birthday PS3---Wii---EEEPC Giveaway!
Psymon replied to Haptic's topic in Our Advertisers
Woo! Thanks guys, awesome news and thanks for the phone call this morning, has made my day (should make the first week of 1/2 term a bit more bearable ) These guys are awesome, if you havent had a quote from them already, give them a bell Thanks again! Si -
We run an avaya system, on the config i have it set up to email me the voicemails, can do a directory lookup from the phone to find other users (Avaya's phone directory). And its a good mix of analogue, digital and VoIP. As the analogue lines are being killed off by age and lightening im replacing them with VoIP by simply setting uip an extension, a user then tagging the port on the switch to the Voice VLAN and then PoE the phone. Happy days, fires up and asks for the extension. Not sure about interacting with the phone directly via a laptop tho.

How are you getting on with Shutdownertron?
Psymon replied to powdarrmonkey's topic in EduGeek Shutdownertron
1.0, 2.0 and 3.0+ are actually standalone in a wierd way. You cant just install 3.0+ and the predecessors use it, you actually need to install each one individually. 1.0 will only run .net 1.0 apps, 2.0 will only run 2.0apps etc...- 14 replies

Got a couple of LX710's in the office, battery powered mouse and keyboard unfortunately, no charger unit. HOwever with the Logitech SetPoint you can lock the mouse + keyboard to the PC so these sort of things dont happen. Long as you connect it initially, and then go into the Setpoint and "Secure" the keyboard. The software tells you when your battery is low etc.. and there is a "Check" battery button on the device also if you dont have the software installed the red LED lights up to tell you its nearly out of juice.

Also you only need a 32bit Boot.wim, and you can looad a 64bit image from it. We only have the x86 boot image installed, and can install all images. Our setup is as follows. 32bit Server 2008 Boot Image 32bit Vista Image 64bit Vista Image 64bit Server 2008 Image Multicasting enabled when needed (21 PC's in an ICT Suite without slaying the server with 21 connections) Works fine.

Performance Management for Technicians (How do you do it?)
Psymon replied to garethEds's topic in How do you do....it?
Agreed, if you dont have a helpdesk, get jobsheets. How long they take on jobs, average time to close a job based on job difficulty, how many jobs done a week etc... -
You are using the Server 2008 boot.wim? When we were looking at multicasting Vista images, we read that you couldnt multicast with the Vista boot image, and had to install the server 2008 boot.wim. The client would connect to the multicast on the vista boot, but not recieve any information. Could be similar with the server install? Worth a shot.

Sick of GPOs and fed up with cumbersome, expensive deployment tools

Tried a "gpupdate /force" just incase?

I remember pictures of the original prototype being made about 4/5 years ago, and since thought it was just going to become a myth. Nice to see them being made tbh.

Our ICT Teachers have a MMC console that allows them to reset passwords in the Students OU in Active Directory. Saves a lot of work

Agreed, just go to the Adobe site, and request a distribution license for Flash Player (ActiveX). Im sure you have a group policy that covers every PC that you can stick it on. Personally i have a "Core" policy for Office, Visio, Encarta, and then an "Application Software Policy for Flash, Adobe, Java etc... Then departmental for the restricted licenses, people are slowly getting the idea that MSI's are the way to go, even some educational software suppliers!!!

We have a Sharepoint site that works as a ticketing system (all in-house) which is pretty much a smart filtered list where IT staff can view all Tickets, and assign them to themselves. The user-end is a sharepoint window that allows the staff to log a job, add the error code (if there is one) and assign it to "Reprographics", "Telecoms" or "IT". Jobs are first-come basis unless its something that stops the teaching. We can add messages (Work Log) to the jobs so people know whats happening about there task. Further developments for me could include security group linkins, so if 1 member of the ICT Dept logs a job, the other can see it to stop diplicate jobs popping up. Edit - we have radios to communicate with each other if needed, and my iPhone is on the Exchange push, and we have each others mobile no's of course.

As this program couldnt use a UNC path for the shared data, i explained to the head of department that they will not be able to track student progress, however can use it as an interactive teaching tool etc... All you do is enable "Quick Launch" or something along them lines, and the students dont have to type a username and password to get in.

The job of these systems is to make it easier to manage with less technical knowledge (without being rude). If you plan on doing MS Training (MCP, MCTS etc...) and learning all of AD, DNS, DHCP etc... then dont put it in place, it will hinder your training with wizards and an interface that is not what you will see in MS literature. IF you are planning on moving into industry at a later point in your career, chances are your not going to be able to get this software in. If you want to batch import students into the system, learn CSVDE. If you watn to lock down computers and users, use microsofts security templates as a start. In the long run your doing yourself a favor learning it. Personally i prefer the Windows Server Tools as they are, File Server Resource manager to do quotas, Group Policy to lock down computers and users, and AD as is to manage accounts printers etc...
