  1. The machine will only uninstall the app if it has had the following ticked in the Deployment tab. "Uninstall this application when it falls out of the scope of management" Si
  2. This sounds like a pretty safe idea actually. Makes sense for external access as well. Just the licensing might be costly? Simon
  3. Hi, Before i start we are an independent international boarding school, so this might seem like a strange request for some. Been looking at letting students personal laptops access there files on their home shares. Looked at "Network Policy and Access Services" on a couple of occasions, which is the Microsoft solution. I am aware it might not be happy with Apple and Linux machines, however we havent got a spend available in invest in a solution that is all singing and dancing Has anyone got this, or a similar solution in place? Just curious before i dive in head first. Simon

    KMS activation

"SLMGR -DLI" should state Name : OS Name Here, Edition Here Description : Windows Operating System - OS Name, VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel Partial Product Key : 2V3X8 License Status : Licensed Volume Activation Expiration : xxxxx minute(s) (xxx day(s)) Key Management Service Client Information Client Machine ID (CMID) xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx KMS Machine name from DNS : SERVER-NAME.Domain.name:1688 KMS Machine Extended PID: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxx-xx-xxxx-xxxx.xxxx-xxxxxxx Activation Interval : xxx Minutes Renewal Interval : xxxxx Minutes This tells you that that you are not inserting a product key, the product is activated, and the server it has activated with. If it states anything other than KMSCLIENT you are putting a key in at some point. Simon

    KMS activation

Shouldnt need to use VAMT. As long as you can get 25 clients to connect to your KMS server you will not have to worry. We have our unnatended file set up in such a manner that is does not prmopt for a CD key. You should have no product key in your unnatended install script, as by default the images have KMS Client keys. Onlu use an MAK if you expect the machines to be off site for 6+ month stints. Simon

    KMS activation

Get the KMS server you want up and running On the machiens you do not want KMS run the command slmgr -upk to remove the KMS key from these servers. Running slmgr -ato after this should allow them to activate with the KMS server you want to use. I think you might even be able to change the "weight" and "priority" of these DNS records in order to force the machines to use your preferred KMS server. Using KMS key to activate them. Should either use MAK, or have a KMS server set up internally before running slmgr -ato manually. As long as all of the KMS servers are functioning you will not realise there is a problem, as providing they all have 25 clients registered on them for activation, they are live and communicating with Microsoft. Providing you used the same KMS key on all machines, they can total the amount of queries from each KMS Server using your KMS Product Key. You said ealirer in the post they your production servers are using this key, removing them from AD would not be a good idea You are correct, Data centre is the highest class of key available, and will authorise all servers and clients. Finallly, you do not need to insert a product key into any images / installations if you have a KMS server. Hope this helped Simon
  7. Acer Aspire 5732Z Value Laptop - Laptops at Ebuyer Above is a really good machine. Can get a 3yr Warranty /w accidental damage, laptop bag and mouse for around £70. Simon
  8. There is only 1 hour that starts with 6 in my day.
  9. A guide i wrote AAAAGES ago, still fully relevant apart from you need to use a 2008R2 Datacentre key on Server 2008 R2, or have installed the KMS Update for Server 2003 / 2008. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2008/22736-vista-wds-key-management-service-kms.html http://www.edugeek.net/forums/attachments/windows-server-2008/2295d1218459342-vista-wds-key-management-service-kms-installing-vista-wds-key-management-server.doc Simon
  10. These are the 2 we use Pre-Vista - SELECT Version FROM Win32_OperatingSystem WHERE Version < "6" Vista and Newer SELECT Version FROM Win32_OperatingSystem WHERE Version > "6"
  11. CP2025 is a better option. Bit bigger, toners are more cost per page friendly etc...
  12. How did you restrict public folders (on 7) out of curiosity? Si
  13. For internet only access we used our existing wireless (not tagged to a guest vlan) and then using RADIUS moved the clients to a seperate VLAN for guest access. This was then filtered with an ACL on the switch (on the guest vlan) to only allow access to DC's for DNS and DHCP (port based) and the firewall for 80 and 443 (HTTP / S). Works fine
  14. Using the HP Universal Print Driver overcame all of this. You can simply set it up and hit auto configure, picks up the duplex, page per minute, size etc... and the driver can be used for any HP printer. Si
  15. Based on £90 for a yield of 6500 about 1.4p/page. Simon
  16. Agree with above, we have 5 on site now (the new ones with the green power button etc...) Simon
  17. Incase anyone has or is having problems installign Windows 7 onto P4 boxes with ASRock or MSI motherboards this is a pretty good solution that doesnt involve making bootable floppies using the microsoft method. (For the curious people Download details: Windows XP Home Edition Utility: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install , replacing the XP CD with Win7 DVD works for code5 errors) The solution below uses the freeware program ImgBurn to make a new boot file, using the one provided on the Win7 / Vista disc, or if you do not have a disc using vLite. UNAWAVE - Code 5 Error whilst booting Windows 7 DVD Works well, thought i would share Si
  18. Thanks CP!
  19. My old clio was easy to replace bulbs on, especially the rears as it was just twisting a plastic bandle to release the whole thing. Havent had to change a bulb on my last 2 BMW's
  20. We used a TFT television with a component connection. Then a BNC converter. Si
  21. I would 2nd PowerDsine, they are well worth the money. HP Use them in there PoE switches also Si
  22. Correct, Windows 2003 / XP etc.. do not know the policydefinitions folder exists, you will have to manage all Vista / 7 / Server 2008 / 08R2 policies from a Vista or newer machine. You need to create a "PolicyDefinitions" folder in SYSVOL\Policies. Copy the EN-US folder for the language files. After that fire up a Vista / 7 PC and you can manage the new features with Group Policy Management MMC. Found this on technet
  23. Replacing the monitor on there desk with a touchscreen is the solution. Gonna order one in and give it a go. Worse case scenario we move them to Win7 earlier than the rest of the school. Many thanks, Si
  24. These are individual needs clasrooms, with literacy and numeracy interactive games. The idea is like using a projector. You can set up everything on the screen infront of you, and use the 2nd wall mounted screen in the same means as an interactive whiteboard / projector setup would work. Instead of the teacher and student leaning across the desk to touch the screen, they can work with the touchscreen monitor on the opposite wall. The room cannot fit a projector easily, the touchscreen is cheaper, allows the same amount of interactivity (on a smaller scale, which isnt a problem with 1on1) and the staff member can still use their desk to perform normal works when not teaching. (not at the same time ofc) Si
  25. 2nd screen would be wall mounted in a interactive whiteboardboard-esque way. The staff have interactive software in the department, and have not the space or hardware for a whiteboard setup. So a 2nd cloned monitor would allow normal use of the machine for email / word processing etc... and allow the 2nd screen to be used for the interactivity. Am i making sense? Si
