  1. If you are using Vista use Group Policy Cliuent Side Extensions and deploy the shortcuts to the start menu on a per-machine basis. You can also delete the useless shortcuts like Windows Mail, Meeting Space etc.... edit : We use redirected desktops, so they are quota'd for in the users storage space, and deploy a background with group policy. The start menu is then built on a machine policy to add shortcuts to network academic software. The "All Users" start menu takes care of the locally installed apps.

    KMS activation

You will have 4 KMS keys in your Volume Licensing website. 1 - Win Srv 2008 R2 Data Ctr/Itan KMS C 2 - Windows Server 2008R2 Std/Ent KMS B 3 - Windows Web Srv 2008R2 KMS A 4 - Win 7 - KMS Works like the hierarchy above, keys can activate their peers and below, none of the class above. DataCentre / Itanium can activate all servers and clients including other Itanium / Datacentre installs. Standard / Enterprise can activate other Standard / Enterprise Servers, Web Server installs and all clients, but not any keys above it (Just Datacentre / Itanium) Web Srv can activate other web servers, and clients, but not Std / Enterprise / Datacentre Win7 can activate other clients only, no servers. Your best bet is to install 1 KMS server with the Datacentre KMS key, job done then can activate everything in the school. Hope this helps, Si
  3. Deploy the settings with group policy, just need them to GPUPDATE on a wired connection first. Piccy attatched. Si

    KMS activation

KMS Service V1.2 (Windows 7, Server 2008 etc...) An update is available that installs Key Management Service (KMS) 1.2 for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and for later versions of Windows Server 2003 Install this then launch CMD. Type slmgr for a list of commands. slmgr -ipk PRODUCTKEYGOESHERE (Use the KMS key from MVLS) slmgr -ato (Activates the KMS key) slmgr -sdns (Enable DNS publishing of a _SRV record for the KMS) slmgr -dli (display license information) When you install the clients for Windows7, Windows Vista, Server08, do not type any product keys into the image. The default key that is on the disk will auth with the KMS. KMS keys are for the service MAK keys are manual activations Key pre-installed on the MVLS disc will automatically work. KMS will not work until 25 (i think) clients auth with it. The message when you click "Activate windows now" will say "You have not reached the required amount of clients" or something along those lines. Hope this helps. Si PS - little guide i wrote a while back - http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2008/22736-vista-wds-key-management-service-kms.html

  7. Seconding Sennheiser, they are awesome.
  8. Seconding "CHKDSK /r" through recovery console.
  9. I manually backed up my docs/pics/music to a 1Tb HDD inside the box (was formatting a RAID0). Installed Win7, copied over th stuff again, reinstalled the apps / games / etc... Works a treat, only problem atm is that Windows Live Messnger crashes on startup and has to be launched, wierd. Si
  10. I installed XP Intel 915 drivers onto a Vista machine and got the control centre and everything. It even had a tick box for "Run WinSAT after restart" Si
  11. This is a very old post. Most software tends to be ok with Vista now.
  12. Simon Pegg is a horror buff (Sean of the Dead) and said this was a must have for zombie horror books.
  13. ADMX files are put into a central store in SYSVOL, ADM files you have to inject into the policies (making them bigger) ADMX are read by group policy, the settings saved into the policy, but the actual file remains external to the policy. Policies are smaller, centrally updated ADMX files etc... Si
  14. OWA with entire session secure
  15. Wouldnt have been in my thought process. Glad you have it sorted. Si
  16. Off chance it could be a cookie or setting saved in IE's temp files. Tried cleaning them with the Internet Options or CCCLeaner? Si
  17. Dont have an actual Doc on it but its really easy, attatched is a word doc with what i did. Psy Adding Updates from MS Catalogue.docx
  18. Fix is on WSUS but it has to be manually imported using the MS Catalogue Si
  19. Installed Vista SP2 on a few machines at the start of this month when it came out and it messed up the Client Size Extensions (Preferences in Server 2008 Group Policy) After a bit of playing / googling turned out the CSE MS Update wasnt "applicable" to SP2 of vista. Downloaded the new one (Released on 23rd of this month) and all works as intended. Added it using "Import Updates..." by KB number onto WSUS and works Si
  20. Storm just passed over as South-East Kent (Dover) just spitting now. Had a couple of really loud strikes
  21. Can redirect desktops on vista
  22. Yes, it updates from itself Edit - It needs to have itself in the servers group so it manages itself / installs AV on itself. Management console literally just management.
  23. Just updated the AV software on the Director of Music's laptop after installing Vista SP2. Upon launching Sibelius 5.x (5.2.5 to be precise, affects all versions). Splash screen gets stuck on "Creating Tool Windows : ToolName" Upon removing Sophos it was back to normal, reinstall sophos from the Enterprise Console and it dies again. Rang up Sibelius and they were aware of the problem, (but you only get support for 30days after registering the serial). Just a heads up for anyone. Si
  24. Still no luck, same as before.
  25. Yes using default internal DB, reinstalling .NET 2.0 now.
