I feel the Googe product is slightly better but while 90% of the software aimed at schools insists on office 2003 and XP compatibility (exaggerating but not much...) we are stuck with office. My staff freaked the hell out when we went from office 2010 to 2013 and blamed the world's woes on it... imagine trying to get them to use google.

alas no, it just seems to sync the whole directory when manually performed but works perfectly during its normal scans. Its like the sync service manager caches the results. Using a macro creator I found online, I have sped the process up but there must be a better way.

Here is the scenario... My 365 directory sync is set to sync certain OU's because we have SLG (3-4000 accounts) so obviously I don't want those syncing over... During the initial setup months back, I synced them over by accident and the only way I found to remove them was to open the synchronization service manager, perform a search and manually remove them one by one (8 clicks per user). This took me several days to do and a sore finger. Just to rub it in, I also buggered it up a month back and had to perform the exact same thing again. All going well... Just had an engineer to setup some 365 system and he performed a full sync, thus sending all 4000 users back into the system. To his credit he provided a powershell script which removed the offending users from 365 however I have realised the users are still showing on the "Synchronization service manager" and every few hours, it runs the sync again. I am assuming for the third time this year, I am going to have to personally remove all the accounts I don't want again (30,000 mouse clicks). Does anyone know of a better way to remove these users from the sync service manager before I start doing what I know I must do? Thank you

I'm interested. Would you run your network without paid endpoint protection? I am a big fan of defender/essentials and do think the days of paying for these things is coming to an end but just need the proof.

Hello, Our 8.1 devices build in MDT with 3 passes of updates so imagine my surprise when they asked for 160 updates when completed. I injected every spare update I could get from WSUS-Offline and now that number has gone down to 80. Looking into it further I noticed all the updates the laptop is trying to install are non critical or not security based so believe it must be talking to Windows Update directly. I have set the "specify intranet Microsoft update service location" correctly (we have been using the same one for years) but apart from the other settings like telling it to delay restarts etc... there is not much else set. Is there anything I am missing in group policy to insist it does not talk to anything other than WSUS onsite? Thank you

maybe I'm looking at it too easily but surly no different from the migration of my current 2000 users to 365, just ten times the users. Theory being (and confident), no downtime and with the budget that no doubt holds, the job would be a breeze.

EIS over RM every day but have you thought of approaching one of the big players like Stone or Viglen for a network revamp? I'm sure they would jump at the chance of standardising your domain and making it all work together. Laptops on a domain are fine by the way but upgrade those 2003 servers asap before you start anything else.

Chromebooks shouldn't scare you and are pretty much the best thing since sliced kebabs... Wouldn't think you can auto login however there is a setting somewhere in the management console to only allow signin to certain domains. Put your school's in there and bingo!

I spoke to them today. Their standard package was a little under a grand which I thought was quite good when you consider the manpower it will save and errors it would reduce. Not quite for me at the moment but think it would be useful to some. Also seemed good people.

Hello, I have the best shot in years of getting rid of the ever useless SIMS Learning Gateway and am looking for recommendations. I like the look of School Comms but do like the idea of students being able to sign in and checking their timetable which it does not seem to do. Can anyone else recommend a parent and student portal which has websites and apps for ease of use? Thank you

Not using it yet but have it booked to be completed in a few weeks time. I am very much in favour of cloud email (no file size restrictions, less servers to worry about etc...) but my headmaster is not sure so getting it setup on the sly. Going to run some users such as year 7 and my self so when I bring it up again I can say "they have been using it for months and no issues (hopefully).

Far from an amazing fix but try ensuring the proxy the job uses is the cream server. Also to restore your files, try selecting restore from other os instead of windows. Slower and filled but should show all your files and drives.

We have a shared area for them which is about 150GB however with the introduction of Google Photos this year, I am starting to reduce this and make policy for students to use their areas for current work and archiving older items on Google Photos as it allows them to create groups, view them easily, and download quickly should they need them for examiners. I used to give them 10GB and got moaned at for that too.

I bought a QNAP NAS with about 8TB for around £400 and just dump the lot on that every year for about 6 months. Not aware of the legal requirements and just do it as a little service really.

Every now and again I put all the known youtube downloaders into my AV to kill off as well as blocking download sites. I do it every 8-12 weeks or so when ever a teacher annoys me enough.

I remember this fella when W8 came out. One of the many, "in my day we had Windows XP and were grateful for it" bunch..... Personally I fancy keeping up with the times and staying relevant.

Running both GAFE and 365 along side network storage here perfectly as we like to offer the choice. Google is the preferred system as it ties into Chromebooks. Will take about 2 cups of coffee to get setup and working and in my 3 years of using it, trouble free.

Well then, you either..... A: downloaded the US version rather than the UK English one. Even if all the language packs are installed, Cortana aint working unless that first drop down box reads English UK when you install it. B: When asked, you chose "this is a school or work machine" rather than "this is a personal device". No idea why this is the case but annoyed the hell out of me. Both cases happened to me. I suffered so you don't have too but sounds like a reinstall is in order. Enjoy.

did you do the upgrade they send you or did you use an image you downloaded from volume licencing?

Hello, Is it possible to block certain devices (by MAC address or anything) from certain WLAN's in Ruckus but allow them to still use others? All I can find in Ruckus is an all or nothing approach. Thank you
