That's the one. Pretty darn amazing was DPM. Not as amazing as Veeam but if you have a MS licence agreement (shame of you if you don't) and don't have a few grand spare for Veeam then Data Protection Manager is my hot tip of the day.

Cant remember its exact name at the moment but Microsoft do an amazing backup software which should be part of your Microsoft licence. The lack of name is bugging me now but sure someone will remember. I use Veeam but if I didn't have money, I would use the MS one.

Funny, Im pro google at work but not a fan outside of it. Google everything in school and Youtube education works well for me but yeah, when there is a non US problem (Chromebooks mapping to US layout) then you can forget a fix anytime soon.

Have you taken out all the built in apps using powershell? If I were a betting man, I would say that's your problem (or at least a large part of it).

I know money is tight around different schools but think our upgrade to Sibelius 7 was about £2500 and that was for about 50 licences so your 15 wouldn't cost the earth and you should be able to put a good plan together to the SLT for this. They will be quick enough to moan when something goes wrong due to XP.

must admit, I have never seen that screen and if anyone wants a video unblocking to the students, they come through the helpdesk. Not sure how other schools would see this but not even a handful of teaching staff in my place would be able to figure this out (not joking) so its best they come through me.

I think you should buy your own router (methods of getting your key are only a bing away) and grant BT little to no access to it. To me, BT are on the same level as Capita and RM.

Its an HP 4300 which is total overkill but surplus to requirements now hence why its just running media. Just looking at its iops is about 5-40 so doubt a NAS will have any issue running this unless someone here can tell me otherwise. (I know there is little chance of the P4300 failing other than a hard drive but if it has student work on it, I want a warranty).

I would say in a perfect world you would have everything shut down at close time via script and have a wake on lan system to start the hardware at opening. If you are lucky enough to have SCCM onsite you can set that up to wake them during the night to run maintenance tasks. I would avoid sleeping the units as if they don't restart, they wouldn't pick up new software or install updates.

I may look at that option thanks. The thing is I feel money for projects is about to dry up in my place so in a funny way, I would rather put in place the system for the next 10 years now while there is money about rather than beg and plead in 2 years.

Can someone please give me their opinion on how you would achieve the following.... Scenario: Users have an AD account but no network email access by design. Personal email address is in active directory. Required: -External facing web portal. -User puts their username in a box. -User is then either... A: emailed a link to a page with a new password which preferably expires. B: emailed a new password (less preferable as password would be in plain text). If it helps, I have a SharePoint 2013 site active but must stress, I want nothing to do with the setup except paying a third party with experience of this to set this up. Can anyone point me to someone who can create such a system please? Its sooooo frustrating because I know it can be done but no idea who to turn to. Talking to one third party about maybe setting something up but its nothing they have really done and am hesitant to put their name to it. Thank you and really hope someone can help me on this. Cash is waiting to be spent!

The lady there just said, email Capita to get put on the list. The next thing I know I get told its £1250. I refuse to pay for another system of Capita's which will feck up the first time someone tries to use it.

My Ruckus system is 5 years old this summer and with my thinking ahead cap firmly in place, am wondering just when I should aim to update it so looking for ideas? Currently it allows all students (about 1500) personal device access as well as our 800 in house devices connection with little to no problems but feel use will only grow as time continues. Even though its working now, I get the feeling I need to start planning for an upgrade to cope with a higher demand from student devices (I currently cap their speed). No doubt I would go with Ruckus as I gather their buyback and upgrade is quite nice but could use some independent advice as although I trust my local resellers, at the end of the day its a brave sales man who tells a customer they don't want an upgrade Is 6 years a good time for a refresh or would you run it until capacity dictates otherwise.

I have a media room with 16 macs all using an older HP SAN I have as storage space (Final Cut X) but its getting on now and it's extended warranty is costing about £1500 a year. Its been pointed out to me that for that I can get a new Synology / QNAP NAS with a 3 year warranty however can someone tell me a way of knowing if the throughput will be acceptable for purpose. I push remote desktop apps which most staff can use but being asked to put their domain/username stumps half of them (trying not to remember how much more money they are on....) I used and deployed Direct Access however while testing it, errors would sometimes occur and if that happens EVERYTHING becomes bricked. If there is the slightest error, the laptop will refuse to authenticate and update group policy or connect to network shares until it is back online. Now I may have been unlucky and although I would often blame myself, there are not many buttons to press to get it wrong. I have come to the conclusion it is a nice feature for small offices to use but in a school, there is too much at stake if it goes tats up. I know a better man than me would be able to fix it when it goes wrong but I think it is a reason Direct Access has not killed off remote desktops or VPN's.

we tried the guest auth thing and it just fell on its arse. Our reception forgot how to issue badges most days and the process required installing a profile which some devices didn't like (kindles and windows phones were a no and macbooks were a little funny)... In the end we just gave a site wide key to all which was locked down to basic student access as we figured there was nothing anyone can get to which will cause them problems (confident in Lightspeed filtering).

I talked to them at BETT and they told me it was free if you host your own SLG. Capita really are total idiots when it comes to anything but invoicing you for stuff which really does not work as well as it should.
