If you fancy using browser based versions you can apply for 365 which includes licences for Office to staff and students as well as browser based versions free of charge although a slight faff setting up. Personally I'm more a Google docs person (also free to schools if you don't mind using a browser based version).

thanks for suggestions so far. I have uninstalled AV from the server with the redirected folders and a test VM but issue persists. Going to look further into this 250 limit however my paths are exactly as they have been for the past 5 years and changed nothing. Todays going to be annoying isnt it?

Random things are sent to test us and today, I am being tested..... Students have left for summer, Monday was fine and Tuesday morning was fine. All we have been doing is unboxing a few new computers and touched NOTHING on group policy or AD other than reset 21 accounts of new computers we were putting in.... The few admin staff then start to complain their desktops and start menus arnt working. To add injury to this, documents are taking an age to open... Spend a day on this and reset everything there is to reset with no errors to be found anywhere. The only thing I have to go on is the error message in the event viewer.... "Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "desktop" to \\..... redirection options=0x1001 .... This may be due to one or more files under the source or target folders with a fully qualified file name longer than 256 characters. Error details: the copy functions cannot be used" Again, must stress that no one has touched anything. These are the same policies which are definitely working when doing a GPresult that were working perfectly on Monday. Please someone tell me they have seen this before and how easy it is to fix it! Lots of plans in the summer and fannying about with this was not one of them. Ta

Im a humorless IT man so wouldnt have got it if it were a joke. Maybe some of your schools are cool with random fonts but I work in quite a respectable place. I gather deleting the file is the main way to do this unless someone else comes up with a better plan?
-
lol no way. Network managers have few perks and bending the will of users is one of them.

Anyone got an easy, group policy way to disable fonts such as comic sans? It annoys me more than it should that a respectable secondary school employs people who think comic sans is acceptable.

Hello, First off, I have never really had to play with forward lookup zones before so today is ruining me. Youtube education has died and replaced with the following simple steps... YOUTUBE CONTENT LINK Every time I create forward lookup zones like I think it should be done, youtube stops working around the site with DNS reasons given. When I remove what I do it works again (although with full access). Really need/want to get this sorted asap and could use some EASY, STEP BY STEP, ULTIMATE HAND HOLDING guide. Long story short, what I am doing at the moment is this... creating a forward lookup zone for the following with CNAMES restrictmoderate.youtube.com Forward lookup zone 1: youtube.com m.youtube.com CNAME forwarding to restrictmoderate.youtube.com http://www.youtube.com CNAME forwarding to restrictmoderate.youtube.com Forward lookup zone 2: googleapis.com youtube.googleapis.com CNAME forwarding to restrictmoderate.youtube.com youtubei.googleapis.com CNAME forwarding to restrictmoderate.youtube.com Forward lookup zone 3: youtube-nocookie.com http://www.youtube-nocookie.com CNAME forward to restrictmoderate.youtube.com oh and when I do this, Chromebooks all stop logging in too. Life has not been kind to me so far this year and this is really getting to me. Can anyone just make this go away? I did see a post about this on EDG however it was on the Smoothwall page and I am lightspeed. Thanks all

You little love!

Thanks for that. Didnt know you could launch apps from cmd. For anyone else looking here... start minecraft:education edition Ta
-
Thanks for that however the exe brings up the smartscreen filter warning where the app when run from searching for it just works. I deployed it with the powershell script it includes during the build.
-
Morning all, Just got Minecraft EDU deploying on my build but as it is an app, I am finding it hard to find a link I can place in the start menu (Classic Shell). Any thoughts where the link to the app may be hiding please? Thanks
-
Not tested but I guess it will work for 8.1 as well. (Well the zip one anyway)
-
Give that a right click and run as admin. You may get the smartscreen message but pressing "more info" and "run anyway" will sort ya.

Was thinking this really. I was half considering Netgear for a moment as I am doing a wireless refresh soon. Talking to Ruckus, Meraki, Meru and was going to include Aruba however at Bett, Aruba gave 0 freebies and Netgear gave lots.
-
Technology - Tech News - CNNMoney Thats summer sorted for me then.
-
Ok big wireless refresh inbound for me and looking to have the main players fight it out however has anyone got anything good to say about Netgear wireless in schools? Normally I wouldnt look at them but seen them at BETT and their lifetime warranties make things interesting. Anyone got hands on experience of a modern netgear solution? Thanks

@Arthur ... never heard of Dell premier before! Always bugged me how poor Dell customisation options were. Just hassling my account manager now. Thanks

So I'm quite a nerd. Every computer I sign off has its purpose analized and spec decided on down to processor generation, RAM speed and even look. Anywhoo.... Looking to revamp my photography department and wanted to push them to 4k monitors and looking at those Intel NUC machines from Stone which fit the spec well however as I get older I really want things to look great as well and was surprised to see HP have pulled their finger out and released their intel 6th Gen AIO machines however as normal they only stick standard hard drives in. To get to the point, in your opinions would you go for the good looking HP AIO with great spec but standard HHD (not even bloody hybrid) or stick to the higher specced Stone NUC with SSD and 4k monitors? The photography department wouldn't know the difference and its only the nerd side of me pushing for 4k. Are you all SSD or nothing or would you say presentation over a slight waiting time?

Asked Capita for a quote to host my SIMS in Azure TWICE now to no response.

Laptops and "Leadership" well assist head
robjduk replied to kevin_lane's topic in Learning Network Manager
I had a similar experience with my MFL department never locking their laptops or caring when they went missing. After a few terms of repeatedly asking them to lock them or at least check their rooms for the missing ones, I wrote and said I was going to stop moaning but in turn, would not be repairing or replacing damaged hardware without the headmasters say. Each school is different in how it copes with your situation however in most cases I would recommend emails with increasingly senior members of the SLT CC'd in so it is logged and kinda stop worrying so much about it. I used to get so annoyed about stuff like this but as soon as you say to yourself "nuts to it, I just wont push to upgrade their stuff in future as they dont look after it" your job gets so much easier. -
I signed up to PeaSoup via Veeam. Great service and nice pricing.
