Work wise we are jus going to carry on as we have done from the first lockdown, I don't think any of us in our team have had a 5 day week on site since. Management are happy that we are in one day a week regularly but if anything comes up one of us at least will go in. Personally, hoping to go up North to stay with friends and their youngster which was meant to do last year. If I'm stuck at home I have 4 bottles of Baileys and will jus go running every morning, well plan to anyway.

I'd go for the DS220+ to be honest but also consider a next plus version up that includes more bays. This is an older post but we run the 2530's, 2540's, 2930f, 5406, etc. We do not have any issues. We don't use Aruba Central either and not sure we will for the foreseeable future, everything we do is on the cli of the switches but we are running the HP iMC tool which does mass config rollouts and updates a lot easier we have 700+ mix of older HP ProCurves and the newer Aruba branded ProVision OS switches.

Start with the basics I feel, i.e. basic connectivity/ping/physical internet line tests, put DNS to one side. Setup continuous pings from a PC connected directly to the MikroTik (as said before you may need the ISP to configure a port on the MiKroTik to be able to communicate with the Internet and internal IPs such as your firewall) also Have you got a diagram of the network, if so please post but obscure any identifiable/confidential info and public IP addresses. Press your SMT or who pays the bills to put pressure on the ISP to help do as much as they can include a proper physical line test by Openreach (I'm assuming it is a Openreach connection of some sorts).

Jus got a 4k monitor, Apple TV 4K box and a FireStick 4K. Still a load of DVDs and Bluerays. I was debating years ago about a new TV and could not decide, I had a Panasonic Viera smart TV before but the firmware/software updates never worked.

Do the ISP look after the MikroTik. My experience with MikroTik is limited but you may need to have the port you are connecting to made part of the brdge if that is how they have got the port that connects to your smoothwall set up. MiKroTik are a bit different than your average ISP router which may have multiple LAN ports. I'd ask the ISP to set this up. You could then connect a device to this port and run a few constant pings. One to the WAN port of the MikroTik, one to the WAN connection on your smoothwall and one to a reliable external IP address. Then when the Internet drops out you can compare which one loses connectivity at that time. I'm also assuming you may need to get the smoothwall to allow ping from the device on the WAN port too as ping from the WAN may be disabled by default

One of our academics thought they were being smart by connecting a router giving out the same ip address range but different gateway. We spent 2 weeks as the issue was intermittent when only certain devices would not connect to our AD and network. We've since rolled out dhcp snooping on switches as it was not the first time. Lets jus say we weren't pleased.

Any chance you can post a bit of a diagram, but please obscure any sensitive and identifiable information (public ip addresses, fqdn's, organisation names, etc.) But if you could include the switches Make and model and firmware. I've setup iSCSI before and used separate switching and had a lot of redundancy i.e. separate network cards split between 2 different controllers on the SAN via 2 separate switches, this was on VMWare. At a previous place we also had a Fibre Channel SAN and that was split too for redundancy (multiple FC adapters, to redundant controllers via 2 separate switches) again on VMWare.

So was there a power cut, did the configuration get wiped, was it not saved :-) would not be the first, lol.

Does the SAN connect via iSCSI or FC, are they completely separate. If they are I'd look at pwr issues. Have you checked the logs on the SAN switch specifically the uptime.

We had CCTV company nick a pwr cable from a switch before now, lets jus say we were not amused. The building was not quite finished but the switch was on and serving a few devices.

Trying to save putting the heating on extra times as it is, the heating is only on for 15mins early in the morning then 15mins again in the evening. Solar panels will not be very easy if in rented/council accommodation, thankfully my flat is well insulated and the neighbour downstairs is an OAP so the warmth rises but others not so lucky.

This could raise the question of if the child is alone with a parent/guardian/adult who then becomes ill and the child needs to phone an ambulance. So an element of trust and understanding is needed, child is allowed to use the phone (whatever technology that uses) when permitted but also able to use the phone in an emergency if necessary. 999 calls should be able to be made from a locked device but other calls to relatives should also be made available if needed if the circumstances come up.

I have a BT Business account at home with their Cloud Voice Express package. I don't use the BT router because it's IPv6 implementation was limited with no IPv6 routing support and as wanted to use a more advanced separate firewall anyway opted for a DrayTek. Still on vDSL no plans currently to deploy FTTP in my area. I'm happy with the service from BT, I've seen some issues in the past at various customer sites but my experience has always been good. Virgin Media is also available in my area but I've had more issues with them both personal and business but that is a long story.

Our security dept has access to our datacenter server rooms, in the event of a fire they will be dealing with this anyway. No one else has access apart from the senior level IT teams, not even estates. The datacenters also are on CCTV and all access is logged.

The only 3 issues I've seen to cause these sort of issues were 1. Network connectivity issues caused by a network loop (user connected wall jack to wall jack), we had vlans setup so it only effected a small area (a benefit of using vlans) diagnosed by the port lights on the switch not looking normal and frantic 2. Network connectivity issues caused by misconfig on a core switch creating a loop bringing a section of the network down that the core switch was responsible for. Diagnosed by a matter of knowing someone made a change 3. Internet issues caused by a physical damage to the overhead telephone cable. Was a PITA as the ISP kept blaming our network and took days of isolating different parts of the network before ISP owned up.

Create the separate vlan gateways for guests/boyd on the smoothwall would be better. If you add an additional firewall/USG you are only going to complicate things with routes etc. Even if you have a layer 3 switch and routing the internal vlans on that I'd still go for putting the BYOD/Guest default gateway on the smoothwall as for the easier control and isolation from the rest of your network. I know you can achieve this on a layer 3 vial ACLs which I have done in the past but for guest/byod would defo go and separate them completely on the firewall it self.

Sorry misread your post. That does not make much sense. Sometimes we have had issues with our switches where the management interface goes down and it needs a reboot. The switch performs normally in this case but cannot be pinged or access the SSH sessions but if you can ping from a differnt vlan that rules that out and any issue with the default gateway. Even if there was a default gateway issue the server on the same vlan should still be able to ping. I'm assuming network mask is also OK?
