[blue touch paper and stand well back] RAID 5 isnt as popular for large arrays anymore rebuild times and risk of failure of another disk while its rebuilding. 10 is pretty much the go to for alot of things and would mean you wouldnt need to have 2 types of RAID in the same box if your looking to keep things simple. last storage server i purchased through Dell had two smaller drives in a mirror for the OS and then the rest set aside for data.

make sure authenticated computers have read access to the share where the MSI are being pointed two in your policy

would be adding it on the image apply process when imaging if i remember correctly. it does depend on what settings you have set in your unattend.xml answer file
-
there is a tick box under the WDS settings to disable domain join on as part of the image process. the machine names are generated by a variable in these options so it could be set to %Domainadmins% and it adds the extra number when querying if the machine exists.

you can export the permissions to a text file using icalcs this can then be reimported back if needed. or you could join a machine to the domain and copy all the data to that the permissions will "follow" the files -
i have already done the sims release upgrade (with everyone out) but i didnt have a chance to run the discover upgrade at the same time which is what i would usually do. From memory this can be deployed without having to remove people from SIMS (only about 10 installs of discover across the whole site)

cheers always a little nervous with doing such things during the course of the day

Would running DBATTACH in sims for a backup close peoples connection to SIMS while it carries out a backup? looking to run a discover update at very short notice and want to avoid kicking people out of SIMS as we only have a handful using the discover application.

@fleXx experimenting with this atm. again W10 adding what some would consider needless complexity to an important task of actually displaying and controlling what the end user can see

Remove "Other User" wording from login screen
SHimmer45 replied to AJWhite1970's topic in Windows 10
[grumble] just attempted this with 10 and it appears to just ignore it.. GPO set & image placed in correct folder CTRL ALT DELETE not required for login lock screen is set for the user i set it for manually but not forced across everyone and when i click past the lock screen the default blue hero screen is there. i must be missing a step? In W7 this works with an issue [/grumble] -

Do you still have the lock screen enabled in 10 as how that article reads is that you are changing the lock screen only? -

looking forward to the "cast" being ready for download -
it will like lots of ram if you are a large school and have alot of users, or sims host has 32GB of ram and is currently using 18.4GB i havent seen it go over 25% CPU usage in normal day to day running (2x 6 core xeons) the specification is better than what our LEA / Capita recommended at the time and we have just increased the ram to the current level. It also runs discover as well.

[sims] SOLUS 3 - Pushing out clients to turned off machines.
SHimmer45 replied to Sam_Brown's topic in MIS Systems
i wouldn't put the agent installer into an image as each machine had a unique ID in sims and if its cloned it doesnt work well and is not recommended capita recommend pushing it out either using SOLUS itself (machine needs to be on) or using Group Policy iirc. -
Of the future of IT Managers in Schools (Was Replacing Servers ...)
SHimmer45 replied to pcstru's topic in General Chat
fair point, we make every effort to be available to staff & students in person and have multiple methods of faults to be reported so i hope they wouldn't have to wait "3 days" for a response / fix to a basic issue i understand its a broad statement -

i find this part interesting, i know some school adopt this approach but i would not dream of getting students involved in providing support, seeing as they should be concentrating on studying -
Windows 10 LTSB / EDU and WHOOPS where did the photo viewer go!
SHimmer45 replied to DigiBen's topic in Windows 10
Longer logon times are likely because the pre-staged apps are still present in your default profile, and then gets copied / setup each time the user logs in. there is another thread discussing using Education / Enterprise LTSB & like you i preferred the looks of LTSB but it appears LTSB isnt going to get certain upgrades / fixes as quickly as a none ltsb release (still wading through the differences)- 14 replies
