All decent hire companies would normally have made sure equipment was tested before sending it out on a job. Could you not get confirmation from them about when it was last tested?

Yes. It's possible to configure it for what you'd like to achieve with the use of switcher/scalers, matrix units and touch control panels from the likes of Crestron/AMX. To make it work well you're best getting an AV company in to do the work. It won't be cheap but they know what they're doing when it comes to things like this! PM me if you want details of some companies.

Have you tried Windows 7 on one of them? Does it connect at 1gpbs without any problems?

We've got some Griffin Survivor iPad cases. They're pretty solid (Yes, I've tried dropping some) and not too expensive either.

I'm A+ certified (again, before they changed them to expire every 3 years). I only did it because college paid for it and I thought it might be a useful qualification to have. I passed both exams with the highest marks the college had seen(!). The things in the exam were very obscure and relating to old technologies like Windows 98 that are irrelevant nowadays unless your name is @SimpleSi If I had to pay for it then I probably wouldn't have done it. When I mention it to employers and schools they've never heard of it and don't understand what it is. Nevermind

It depends what you get. You can get some very good LED fixtures and you can get some not so good ones. All of the decent LED fixtures I've used have dimmed "nicely". We've got some Chauvet Colorado LED fixtures in our assembly hall. They're pretty bright and can create a decent colour wash.

We have quite a small sixth form compared to others that have posted (~175). There is a around 10 fixed PCs in the sixth form areas available for the sixth form to use outside of lessons. There is a wired network socket for about each sixth former in their studies and now managed wireless available throughout that they can connect their (personal) laptops/tablets to. They are on a seperate VLAN and authenticate via our Smoothwall for internet access on their personal devices. They don't really put much strain on the IT department in terms of technical support. It's also good not having to worry about replacing loads of computers as they are pretty much all BYOD.

We've been replacing some of our 1810-24G switches with the 48 port version (HP V1810-48G Switch | Ebuyer.com) as we've been running out of space in some of our cabs. The 48 port version has fans whereas the 24 port ones don't. We've not left any spaces between the switches as we haven't got any room to do so. The time it takes to re-patch all your ports depends on how complex your network is, are you using different VLANs etc. If you've only got 1 VLAN then you could probably sort it out in 30 mins? It depends how much time you want to spend and how neat you want to make it.

We use LiteDeck, also industry standard but much lighter!

What software are you using to take the backups?

2009 C2D Mac Mini with 8GB RAM running Mountain Lion.. use it for general web browsing etc, watching films and playing the odd games. Old HP NX6325 laptop (upgraded over the years) running Windows 7, use it for general web browsing and IRC etc. Nothing fancy

Have you had a look at barebone servers from the likes of Asus/Broadberry etc? You could build your own alternatively... using desktop parts? An i3/i5 would be powerful enough for a pfSense server wouldn't it?

Much easier to get a kit that doesn't require you to spend ages polishing and epoxying connectors. We have a kit like this (expensive but worth it. No epoxy or polishing required!): AMP Lightcrimp Plus Termination Kit Once you have the fibre all prepared each crimp only takes a few minutes

Some 3.5mm jack sockets are switched so that when anything is plugged in it completes the circuit.
