I've been having a play with Yodeck digital signage and so far I'm quite impressed. The scheduling will be great at turning on and off the TV at the beginning and end of the day and having different content displayed at different times of the day but one question that's playing on my mind is how can I get admin staff to easily update content without getting lost? All I'm expecting them to do is to update a page or two with daily events.

Thanks all. I would rather not use apple configurator if possible so if I have understood correctly the school signs up to apple DEP and uses apple school manager buy apps. MDM pushes out said apps to the iPads. That sounds all too easy so I'm guessing I have missed something?

Thanks all. It's for a primary so basic stuff like Office and PurpleMash but I've got the answers I was after. The school has bought too cheap before and has to replace sooner than expected so I'll advise the HT accordingly

6 years ago the then HT got rid of the IT suite in favour of laptops. Now there's a new HT and he's thinking about restoring the suite again, perhaps in a different room but for now I'm looking for advice on what PCs to use. The school is a primary. As always, lack of budget is hampering the planning and the HT hasn't got the figures through yet so I don't know what I have to work with but there's a good chance we will be using refurbished kit. A quick look at ICT Direct shows the Dell Optiplex 9020 8GB with a 4th gen i5 3.2Ghz at a reasonable price. Would this spec of PC do and last say 5 years?

The HT is thinking of getting 30 iPads and has asked me to investigate how we could manage them. I've not dealt with iPads for a while and back then I used a MacBook with apple configurator which was a right pain, even more so than charging the iPads. Anyway, I've heard about cloud MDM solutions which sounds like the answer to what otherwise could be a nightmare. So what MDM solutions are there and how much? It's for a primary school and I work part time so want something quick easy to use.

We have the 8200 in all our classrooms and they are fine for general use. As others have said it’s probably the PPT

I'm running Freenas on an old PC with Celeron E3300 3GB. Works fine for backups but at the time that's all I had available.

Our Unifi server still uses Java

I've got 20 Aver E13 laptops which have the same problem although these use Atheros wifi cards. Updating the driver didn't help but unticking the box 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' under power management did help and now the laptop connects quickly to the network. I've not ran any tests to see if the battery drains any quicker which I suspect it might but at least it makes the laptop usable.

For anyone else who has the same question the answer is yes they do.

I'm going to do this today as there are policies in the PolicyDefinitions folder that have been there before I started working here. Looking on MS download, do the policies for Windows 10 1909 also cover Server 2019 and below?

I'm looking for a small mono office printer that will be used by one person and it doesn't need to be networked, but as long as it's got USB that will be fine. They previously used a HP 2055 which has now died. Thanks in advance.

Thanks all, but should I allow the .cab through as not sure I need MS collecting usage data not to mention any slowdown of the machine while it scans. @mavhc *.microsoft.com is white listed but not for downloading system files.

I see our Sophos XG firewall is blocking many attempts from different machines to download a .cab file from Microsoft. Any idea what the file is for? The machines are running a mix of Win10 1803 and 1903. http://adl.windows.com/appraiseradl/2019_12_05_03_05_AMD64.cab

No nothing like that but I am starting to think the batteries are going even though they are only 9 months old.

I've been round and set the laptops to low CPU performance to save power and dimmed the screen. When I got back the laptop I had on test was still logged on after 90 minutes although it was on charge, but it doesn't explain why it went off before.

It wasn't being used when I had the laptop but can't say when the class had them.

We are having great problems with laptops shutting down from what looks like battery failure even though the batteries were replaced 9 months ago. They were working fine until a few weeks ago but now out of 30 laptops 5 or 6 will not last the hour lesson. On a fully charged laptop I watched the battery indicator and it rapidly dropped to 90% then stayed steady at 90%. After around 10 minutes the laptop just went off without warning. On powering back up the event log says the previous shutdown was unexpected. Booting up on charge the battery shows 89% and increases until fully charged. Now an odd thing happened. The laptop was next to me still on charge while I dealt with other matters and the laptop went off again. It was logged on as admin with the power setting set to not sleep while on charge but it still went off after 20 minutes and again the event log says the previous shutdown was unexpected. I'm trying duplicate what happened but it's been on for 30 minutes now and still not gone off. The laptops are Lenovo 410 which I know are old but with the new batteries they were working fine. All run Win10 1903 and have the latest updates. The power settings are set to Critical battery action: hibernate Critical battery level: 5%

I know how frustrating it is trying to do a job without the proper kit as I've only got a cheap network tester that tests the continuity between the cables. It gets the job done but it is hard work and it doesn't check what speed the cable is running at. If we had the money I would be looking at this tester https://www.videk.co.uk/section.php/2821/

You should have a thermostat on the cylinder aka tank and looking at the photo it could be the white box at bottom right behind the shelf. Edit: there’s also a white box behind the valve towards the top but I would check the bottom box first.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I've been trying to get the saving of Chromes bookmarks to the users home directory working but not getting very far and can't see where I'm going wrong. I've setup a test user and applied the user policies Enable the creation of roaming copies of Google Chrome profile data = Enabled Set the roaming profile directory = N:\Chrome GP has made the chrome directory. I've refreshed the users policies, logged on and off and opened Chrome several times but there's nothing in the users Chrome directory. Where as I going wrong? Edit: Fixed. On checking the policy more closely I found a typo on the profile location.
