Did that And that I thought giving a static address might work and it did until I removed the address and set it back to dynamic now I'm back with a 169.254 address.

No still got 187 addresses free

I've been given a Windows 7 laptop that will not connect to the network and keeps getting 169.254.x.x address (we use 10.2.x.x). At first I thought it was a wifi problem so removed and added the wifi profile but it still wouldn't connect but even using an ethernet cable it still gets the 169.254.x.x address. What I don't understand is the laptop is getting the correct DNS addresses and domain suffix so it must the connecting to DHCP right? There is nothing listed in DHCP or DNS for this machine name. The laptop is listed in Ruckus and showing the 169.254.x.x address.

Thanks for the reply. I would expect some lag when a class of 30 laptops all start watching videos at the same time but as you say once the page has loaded it will look the same.

Espresso have told us they want to move our Espresso service to the cloud but I have my reservations as I'm sure it will not be as responsive as an onsite server. Has anyone tried their cloud service and if so what are your thoughts?

We’ve had our fair share of problems with pat testers so now do it in house after the pat testers were caught on cctv just sticking labels on the suite machines without even a visual check. Out of interest how often do you pat test IT kit? We got hold of a document written by the LA specifying 2-4 years for IT kit in low risk areas.

Just tried going to a local schools website only to find their DNS record missing and checking two other schools their DNS records missing too and I seem to recall these schools are using Capita's hosting. Edit: They were back up at 10.45

We use Sophos through Wave9 and couldn’t ask for better support. I would ask them for a quote to save guess work.

Morning. I've been asked to install sketchup but looking through previous EG posts I have a feeling I'm in for a lot of work. Is there still a free version of sketchup and how would I install it?

BGInfo here too using the standard win10 blue smokey background called from a vbs script. This allows for different wallpapers on special days so in October I set the script to have different wallpapers Halloween, Guy Fawkes Night, Children in Need, Remembrance Day and a different wallpaper each day for the last two weeks before Christmas. If it’s not a special day it defaults to the standard blue wallpaper so set and forget. I just need to change the dates in the script before next autumn.

Thanks for the advice. @Fazza is correct in that the hinges are ok it’s the case where the hinges screw to that’s damaged because the screen has been pushed back too far. There isn’t any suite in this school anymore as it got converted into a classroom but the LA did pay for the 30 laptops when it was converted. So thanks again for the advice. I would like newer laptops anyway at least something with AC WiFi as updates take an age at the moment.

We have 30 Samsung i5 300E5C 4GB ram laptops that have SSDs and run win7. They are 5 years old, most have a floppy screen hinge but on the whole still run ok apart from the battery which doesn't hold it's charge for long so the HT has asked me about replacing the batteries. An easy task but as the laptops are so old I have reservations that this will just put off the inevitable and next year the laptops will need replacing anyway. So is it worth spending money on a 5 year old laptop or should we go for replacement laptops?

Right, the HT has bought a very old Keytronics CD player for students to use over lunch times. The CD player is stored in a log cabin AKA the shed which has power and when bought it came with a pair of speakers. Each speaker has 2 x 7" drivers and a tweeter so can be quite loud but I have no idea what output power the amp is. Now the HT wants speakers fitted outside so music can be played in wet weather but there seems limited weather proof speakers around that would be powerful enough to handle the amp. Any ideas where I can get large outdoor speakers from?

Old thread I know and it came up in a search. We are running mostly Win10 1803 edu and we too are getting shed loads of traffic to tlu.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com so I'm guessing MS have not fixed the issue. As we are running a WSUS server I would rather not have desktops downloading updates from MS. Having read the thread I'm still not sure what to block at the firewall so has anyone got the idiots guide how to tame MS?

We had 5 screens fitted over the summer and are having the same problem and the PCs are HP 8200 so maybe the same thing. Anyway has anyone tried setting Powerpoint to restore the display when closing? I've not tested from the modems but that will have to wait until the next closedown, however the UTM died in September so was replaced and the problem remained after replacing the UTM. I understand FTTC speeds are not guaranteed but my main question is how come the speed has changed so much? For the past two years it was running great so something has happened to make both connections drop in speed.

After speaking with a reseller I can confirm the following; with an MS agreement the price MS charge is fixed for the duration of the agreement however the reseller adds a markup which is up to the individual reseller hence a reseller with less overheads will offer a better price
