Update: It seems windows 10 will install it's own drivers if it doesn't like the drivers provided by the print server. Checking 1703 and 1709 machines both showed different drivers so after installing the latest drivers from Ricoh the Chinese writing has gone. I still get the Ricoh app message though which was never there under 1703.

Nothing has changed on the print server for 6 months but after printing a test print on the workstation and the print server I see the workstation has decided to install a newer driver. Next is to run a test print on a 1703 machine to see if it's confined to the 1709 machines.

The report was Windows 10 1709 print preferences is display in chinese. At first I though it was a windup but sure enough it's chinese all right. The print server is running 2016 and the print preferences on the server are correct with no option to change the language anyway so I don't know how this has happened.

@chaunka420 yes it is rather a lot but found it quicker to remove on mass and re-add but only needs to be done once. @gshaw that policy was already enabled

@chaunka420 Yes is seems even when the user profile is deleted the printers the user had are still in the registry so when the user logs back on the old printers are still there unless they are manual removed. The problem only started for us when upgrading from 1607 to 1703. What I did was to closely search the registry and list what was needed to be removed but found I needed PSExec to run regedit under the system logon to remove the keys and add them back. Rename the attached to .reg and put it and this bat file on the system, open a command prompt as admin and run this: Reset_Win10_Printers.bat It will use PSExec to load regedit and import the .reg file then restart the machine. I only has 20 machines but if you have 100 you may want to script it. Maybe but I wouldn't want to be without the backup of a warranty and I'm not sure if Dell would offer one on a 5 year old server but it's an option.

I'm starting to plan a new server for next year so went on the Dell website and got into a muddle trying to find the most cost effective solution. The current server is running server 2012r2 with 8 VMs and is fast approaching 5 years of age when the warranty expires. So far I have replaced 4 of it's drives under warranty and find Dell support very good. Licencing is going to be an issue as the school doesn't have any EES agreement so will have to watch the core count on the CPU. Maybe the current server is overkill, I don't know as this is a primary school 300 NOR with 60 desktops.

Just installed 1709.

Looking at the MS page there are 2 versions of the tools listed, WindowsTH-RSAT_WS_1709-x64.msu and WindowsTH-RSAT_WS2016-x64.msu. Reading the description it looks like I need WindowsTH-RSAT_WS2016-x64.msu as we are running servers 2012r2. Is that correct as I wouldn't want to install the wrong version?

Thanks for all the replies. I've been talking with the office manager today and there is talk from other city schools that they are leaning towards refusing the request on the grounds it would cost too much to collate the information. Personally I can't say if that is the right thing to do or not as I'm sure SIMS holds much of that info if the correct report is used but one wouldn't want to open each pupil's record and search manually.

We have a Sophos UTM too so my next question is on the wifi VLAN are you using the UTM for DHCP?

The HT has asked if I could setup a public wifi to allow staff internet access on their personal devices. The first thing I need is to create VLANs as we are a totally flat network. The switches are a mishmash of different HP models ranging from 1800-1810 and 1910-1920. The 'core' switch is a Netgear GSM 7224 which I've been looking for an excuse to replace for sometime. I don't know much about VLANs and been told the HP 1920 which has static routing would do but I was under the impression I needed a high end switch to have VLANs? If I can pull this off I want to add more VLANs to separate the network further so don't want to get trapped by getting the wrong switch.

I'm not familiar with this software but he only thing I can see that highlighted is the number of reported uncorrectable errors on the statistics tab, this result is 1279.

I've been having problems with a win 10 machine running a Origin SSD. It started with random crashes and running slower than it should. Event log shows 11000 event ID 7 bad blocks so with all these errors would I be safe to say the SDD is faulty?

One of our office machines has started getting an error when running certain reports and from the look of the error it looks line a .net error but I can't seem to find the problem. Target Tracker which also uses .net framework is still working ok. The machine in question is running windows 10. The report is 'Contact List with Daytime Telephone Number' under student.
