We've only got a R1 licence but the question was a general one as I've never used R2 before. Don't think I want to change at the moment as the system is working fine and if it's not broke don't fix it

The other week we took delivery of 15 Toshiba A200 laptops. Ghosting these should be a simple matter but I’m having great trouble with them. Firstly I tried using an image I made last year with a similar Toshiba laptop. From the outside they identical so it was worth a try. I booted with the latest ultimate boot CD and applied the image. On rebooting the machine kept restarting over and over. Next was to reinstall windows over the top of the image but after booting from the windows CD it complained it couldn’t find any hard drives. The machine comes with a recovery DVD but on running, it completely over rights the HD thereby loosing my image. I don’t want to install all the programs from scratch as there are loads and I’ll be at it all week. All I need is to be able to boot from a windows cd! Someone fetch me a small child… I need to kick something...

What are the additional functions in R2 and is it worth upgrading from R1?

Anyone used CA antivirus r8.1? Just had the sales chap on the phone from Misco with a good price. We've got Symantec at present which ends in August so I was looking to change anyway.

Just a thought... you say R1 to R2 is a new license. Would the same apply to the CALs? i.e. could the same CAL's be used even when the server has been upgraded to R2?

I’m trying to change the pupil’s passwords from the default password which Fronter has made to our own. So far I have uploaded a csv file with the usernames and new passwords and Fronter has accepted it. When uploading the csv file I made sure the check box to force change password at logon was NOT ticked. Now I can logon as a user but Fronter is asking the user to change the password which I don’t want. I want all the pupils to have the same password that can not be changed. Where’s the option to change this?

I've not had the logon details sorted out yet as I've been on holiday this week but I see I've had an email from Tim at Synetrixs so I expect all will be resolved next week.

All emails are sent through relay.embc.uk.com. I've read on another thread about logging on to email systems to check the logs so I've requested the logon details for the school as I've never had cause to use email systems before. Sometimes the forwarding works and sometimes it doesn't which is puzzling.

I was talking to the ICT co-ordinator of a local school last week and she is planning to replace the failing server this summer. The new server will be running server 2003, the same OS as the old one so would the old MS select license be transferable to the new server as the old server would be scrapped and no longer in use? Would the same apply to CALs? As long as the same server version is installed surely the old CALs would still be valid? How about changing from server 2003 R1 to server 2003 R2. Would that need a new licence?

Any ideas why a HP Laserjet 3600n goes through a cleaning cycle after every print run? It’s doing it even if 1 blank page is printed. The printers done 51000 pages so could it be on its way out?

Anyone had problems with Google? At both of my schools users are getting intermittent spam warnings when searching with Google. I assume it’s because we are all using the same embc proxy.

I’ve given up trying to change the filtering since last week when a teacher asked me to unblock a website. After making the necessary changes I tried to access the website in question but it was still blocked. I just tell people now that the filtering is frozen till the migration is over.

Just checked on Microsoft and Capita websites and you're right. Someone at the LEA has not done their homework!

I’ve never used SBS before so I can’t say but I understand it’s an all in one package. All the servers I’ve setup have used individual installs of OS and Exchange. Running Exchange on a DC is not recommended by Microsoft but I've done it for years without ill affect.

I asked our LEA to quote for a new server for one of my primary schools. It will need to run everything from Exchange 2007, ISA 2006, SQL 2005, SIMS, DNS, DHCP, print server for 5 networked printers and of course store all the users data. The school is fairly small with only 40 machines 4 of which run Sims. This is the estimate from the LEA: Dell PowerEdge 2900 Dual Quad-Core Xeon Processor 5310 1.6Ghz, 2Gb Ram, 5 x 73Gb SAS Hard Disk drive, 1 x 73Gb SAS Hot Spare HDD, 16xDVD, 3.5" FDD, Raid 5 config, Redundant PSU, PERC 5/I Controller, 17" LCD Flat Panel Monitor, 3 Year On-Site Warranty The above come to £2100 for hardware only. Installation is extra. The tape drive is itemized separately which is helpful as we backup to a NAS box in a remote building so wouldn’t need that . What concerns me is the amount (or lack of) memory. I would have put in at least 4Gb and is the raid overkill? What would you specify?

I set exchange to send direct which I knew was blocked but that created a delay of a minute or two which I hoped would do the trick. It didn’t but was worth a try. Strangely forwarding started working yesterday but today it’s stopped again so I assume it’s something to do with synetrix filters. synetrix have had a lot of problems taking over from fujitsu as one of my schools was without email for a week.

Just a thought, but if the forwarding was delayed by a minute or two I think that might work. Any ideas how to do that?

Ok, here’s strange one and it’s had me scratching my head all day. One of my schools is running server 2000 with Exchange 2000. There is no external OWA so it has been configured to forward the teachers emails to a home address. It’s been like this for 2 years and till now has worked well. The EMBC which we use has just changed their ISP from Fujitsu to Synetrix. I changed the smart host in Exchange to use the Synetrix SMTP servers and since then this forwarding has failed. The tracking log shows the original email coming in and being delivered to the users mailbox, then an NDR is issued which goes straight into the bad mail folder. I have no idea what to do with this as the settings all look ok.

What’s the recommended way to update the drivers on an Adaptec 29160N SCSI adaptor card fitted to a server 2000 machine?

I just ran AIDA32 over a SCSI HD (server 2000, no RAID) and was surprised to see the average linear read was 27.7 MB/s. There's an IDE drive on the same box and that reads 54MB/s. Could the SCSI disk be failing as I remember running AIDA32 on this server 2 years ago and the speed then was much higher?

This morning a teacher bought in his machine from home that refuses to start. It’s a xp pro box and the boot up error says “Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM” I booted with my emergency cd and copied over the files from the restore folder. The machine is now working ok and I can’t understand why this keeps happening as this is the second time he has had this same problem and both times I have fixed it by copying the restore files over. I can’t see anything wrong with the machine, what should I be looking for?

Tried to install the management studio from DVD and are getting an edition change check warning. Moving on from that I click advanced at the components to install list and choose management tools. After clicking next the installer looks like it’s working then I get an error “The feature(s) specified are not valid for this edition of SQL Server”.We are using the SQL 2005 standard version and apart from a service pack nothing has changed.
