I've been asked to fit an old Promethean Activeboard in the hall that at the moment has just got a projector and screen. Shouldn't be a problem only the computer is 14m away from were the board will be! The standard USB cable limit is 5m so I've looked at using an active extension https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BLPSVZS/ref=psdc_1338421031_t1_B015LIU38Y Has anyone used these successfully with an Activeboard?

I want to connect the displayport on a HP 8200 to a Promethean Activpanel HDMI port. Can I use a displayport to HDMI cable or do I need to use an active adaptor? Thanks is advance.

I have a website running Joomla 3.8.7. I've used the hosting control panel to upgrade PHP to 7.1.5 but the site information panel in the backend reports MySQLi still at 5.6.21. Does MySQLi not upgrade when PHP does?

I suppose putting the CTV on a public facing connection with the default passwords is not a good idea.

I work at this school 2 days a week so I was there yesterday and was told plans have changed and they can keep the suite virtually as it is by turning the suite into a multi purpose room. What is proposed is to combine the DT room with the suite by moving some of the IT benching and move the DT cooker, sink and work surface into the suite along one wall so the room can be used for cooking lessons as well as IT. I've never heard anything like it

AFAIK we still don't have one and I would have expected to have been quized by now but no one have been near.

I'm told it's all down to needing more space and as the suite is only used 2 and half days a week when the IT teacher is in it's a waste of a room. We had 4 new classrooms built last year but we are still short of space. I can't understand it as there are 2 rooms which are only used for booster groups so IT must be low down on the priority list. My other school got rid of their suite 4 years ago and their IT teaching is is very much lower in my opinion.

I will be taking a look at ICT Direct and see what they can offer.

The problem is I know nothing about chromebooks! The price and startup speed sounds good but but feel some software is not going to work. I can't think of the name as not at the school today but we bought new software the other month which I don't think is compatible.

We were told today that plans are afoot to disband the IT suite and I've been tasked with pricing up 35 laptops. We would need the laptops to be quick and hardwearing and easy for me to replace keyboards etc. I thought something with an i5, minimum 4GB memory, SSD, AC wifi and 15.6" screen should do but don't want to just buy without getting advice first. Budget wise we are looking at £400-500 but that will include office as this school doesn't have an MS OVS agreement. So any recommendations on what's good at the moment?

We have an MS OVS agreement to cover the desktops and have 365 A1 for faculty email. MS offer Office 2016 for £9.95 but been told we can get it for free as we have an OVS agreement. Is this correct?

I don't think that would work as the videos were still within YouTube. - - - Updated - - - I did think the same so looked and no they were not signed in

A teacher was watching a YouTube video about the life cycle of caterpillars and while the video was paused adverts appeared for x rated videos. Youtube is blocked for students but unblocked for staff but I would never have expected videos like that. I don't want to go down the road of white listing every video staff need so is there a Youtube setting I need to be looking at? We use Sophos for filtering but don't recall seeing anything in there.

I would be interested in hearing how much you are paying for your VoIP systems? This school moved to VoIP 2 years ago and with a hosted system using Orbtalk. We have 13 lines and pay £7 per line per month with calls extra charged at 1 pence per minute.

So we are using 365 email and it is blocking .epub attachments sent by the LA. There is not much on Google about .epub files containing malware so thought I'd ask here. Are these attachments a risk or should I allow them?

This is odd as a different drive failed before half term and there was an option to silence the alarm which I did, then another drive went a couple of weeks later but I didn't know about it till I checked Smart Storage Administrator. The server sits on the bench facing into a corner making it difficult to see the drive lights so will look at turning it over the Easter holidays.

We have an HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server that had a failed drive but did not sound any warning and I only found out because I was checking the Smart Storage Administrator software. There should be an option to turn on and off the warning sounds but I can't find it. Does anyone know where it it?

In hindsight I think the investigation was a smokescreen so they could say 'we have investigated the issue and dealt with it' as had they investigated the real issue it would have opened a whole can of worms.

This is nothing new as we had this problem at one of my schools a few years back. Now at the time I had nothing to do with the CCTV system and wasn't aware it was internet connected. At a meeting a year earlier it was proposed the CCTV should be internet connected as part of the building refurbishment but it wasn't mentioned again and I forgot about it. Fast forward a year or so later to the spring half term the site manager mentions in passing he is having problems with the out of hours monitoring station viewing the CCTV so I tell him that's because it not connected to the network only to be told it was working fine until last week! So I go on my hand and knees and trace the network cable and find it's connected to an BT ADSL router on a separate line. From the office PC I used IE to connect to the CCTV system and on the logon screen was a link to download the manual which listed the default password. Low and behold the password hadn't changed and I was in. Unbelievable, I couldn't have made it up! Seeing what a huge risk this was I tried connecting from my home PC not really expecting to get anywhere as the router firewall would block me right? Wrong, again I was in and had complete control of the CCTV including the ability to move PTZ cameras and view the neighbouring houses (no privacy blackout). So after the holidays I informed the HT of my findings and don't hear anymore about it until the first day of the summer holidays when a letter arrives at home informing me that I am being investigated for accessing the CCTV system without authorisation. The meeting was in five weeks time. I contact my union rep and he attends the meeting with me together with the HT, chair of governors, and the LA education HR bod. They basically tell me accessing the CCTV from my home PC is unacceptable and breaking loads of rules in doing so that's why they are investigating me. At the meeting I learn the company who fitted the system had done the same at other schools and they have lost the contract with the LA. There was another meeting a weeks or so later but nothing came of it and I was told not to do it again... but, I was told not to tell anyone about it or I could face dismissal. Sounds more like a cover up to me!

Looking through the system logs on 1703 machines I'm seeing a lot of event ID 20 errors usually 6 errors in a row. @Katy did trying the update damage the board at all? The boards at my schools have both USB and serial connections.
