I use Google Sites as our schools landing page for staff. It is very easy to use and can have widgets and apps that link with school stuff. The staff can also access this from home so not strictly speaking an intranet but does keep everything consistent for them.

Am I missing something. I simply open another tab so I have the website in one tab and my app screen in the other and then drag the website tab url into the app screen. Is this not the same?

All my schools and our local college use Google Apps for Education to do this. Having used both office 365 and Google I find Google much easier to manage and I really disliked sharepoint but both have their issues and strengths and both are free.

That was like something out of a saw film, this is baby no 3 so I am used to a bit of mess. Wife gave birth at home at 3.21 pm yesterday. The actual birth was fine but the placenta was stuck and that is when everything got very messy. She was rushed into hospital at about 5. they had another go at pulling the placenta out but broke the cord so she was taken into surgery. I was initially told it would take 45mins, 2 hours later the surgeon came and informed me they had had a few issues, they had put a spinal block (injection) to numb her from the waist down but this had not worked so they did another and then realised the first had started to work. The wife was told it is serious if she gets numb from her chest up, she replied that her head was getting numb and she was having issues breathing, at that point they knocked her out with gas and stuck tubes down her throat so she could breath. after the afterbirth had been removed and she started to wake she started convulsing which was very scary to watch. Anyway we are all ok. baby is named Ivy and weighed 8lbs 6oz.

Ou LA once told our schools they were required by law to use Sims Gateway. Pinch of salt with anything LA says. You will probably find they control the ports or some other part of the IT system and like to keep things standardised as it is easier for them to manage, but at the end of the day it is up to the school to run itself. I can not tell you how much simpler and better our systems have been since installing RDS (remote desktop services) for the staff to access from home. Why would the LA want to stop you doing this?

Just found out that my wife will be induced on Friday if baby has not made an appearance before then. Even though this is baby number 3 I am still as nervous as the first time. Better get a good few nights sleep in readiness.

Are you saying that the way banks ,businesses, universities etc using vpn to access a server is not bulletproof or have I misunderstood. You get the staff to sign a policy that says they will only work on network drives and not save work to the desktop etc. They then connect to the server using 2 form authentication + encryption. Why would the ICO have an issue with this?

Why not use a vpn and give staff access to the data on the server from home, that way they never need to carry school data on a laptop.

I remember feeling old when I was about 34. it lasted a few years and faded. The old feeling came back with an almighty bump when I hit 40. I can not explain the feeling but my body fell apart over night.

Thanks for the info and screen shots. Firstly, did you end up with a user seeing the actual my documents folder listed inside the users home folder? Is this how it should be? Oddly trying my fix works a treat but I am still testing. So if in AD I create a home folder \\server\share\%username% hit apply then add \%username% to the end hit apply When I browse root I see d:\users\username\My Documents This is the important bit - the second %username% has been changed to My Documents by folder redirection but if I open My computer logged in as a teacher ,the home folder displays H:username but when they open this they are actually opening username\My documents. So the are only ever working inside the My documents folder. It will probably screw something up but is an interesting find and is working for my test user. I think the important question for me is, if I set this up following posts above, do I end up with a home folder that the user then sees the my documents folder listed with other folders within the home folder or does the home folder map directly to the My Documents folder?

I did not re-register our domain name - true all our g traffic goes to google.com/a/school rather than just school.sch.uk but the primaries I work for did not want to lose the old hosting. To prove the school owned the domain name Google asked me to upload a file to our webspace. Everything works as expected and I can re-register the domain if needed and update Gapps at any time.

Just wanted to check what share permissions and security permissions you all have on the shared folder in \\server\share\user\docs.

Bit of a big ask this one but understand if you can't. I wanted to create an Amazon wishlist based on your ebay list of parts in the first post (no cash at the moment), problem is that Amazon comes up with a list of parts with similar names but the pictures can look different, so I am not sure which parts to add to my wishlist. Would you be able to link to Amazon UK pages in your first post also.

Is that from learnpad or buying Toshiba from another source and then putting learnPad on them? (Just been asked to look at these for another school)

Found a work-around. When creating a new user in AD if you use home folder connect as - \\server\share\user\docs you get some error about the path not being correct, but if you do \\server\share\user click apply but then go back and add \docs separately at the end AD will create the extra folder So when a user opens their home folder it is actually opening \\server\share\user\docs. I have then been able to use basic redirection to automatically redirect everyone's My Documents to this same folder.

Does that mean that as long as your info is routing within the UK and not leaving our boarders it is not checked.
