At all my primary schools we use remote desktop with a gateway, its great for Sims etc. I use a connection profile on an encrypted USB key, they have to use a domain joined laptop that is part of the remote laptops group, the user must also be part of the remote users group and thats before they even get to any login boxes. It has been working at all my schools like this for over 4 years now and everyone loves it. EDIT - oh and the laptop must have the correct certificates or it gets refused.

you are on the same filtering as us. After running the above in cmd it took a few goes to kick off. Actually thinking about it I might have needed to reboot the pc also.

I had a different error code but needed To paste the following into cmd box to get update to work. Might work for you, might not. EDIT - Just beat me to it.

I had a couple of Windows updates that had installed on my 2012r2 host and needed to reboot it. The 2 VM's shutdown almost instantly but the host just sat there at 'Shutting down virtual hyper-v service. I was getting a bit stressed and just at the point I was going to hard reboot but the host rebooted. Any ideas why it would hang for 30mins trying to shutdown the hyper-v service.

You have got to be taking the ..... Are you saying that I will need to get all the school computers to update from MS directly and then remove them from the domain. That's a blinking nightmare. Why do Microsoft make it so hard for us small schools to do anything. Lets hope this is changed

Yes but people seem to be shutting down the sql server first and then taking the snapshot so it's not live which apparently gives a clean snap.

If I was going to have an issue I suppose it would be when I go to merge/delete the snapshot as it merges the snapshot back into the vm. Not sure about vmware but with Hyper-v you should not keep live snapshots as it reduces the vm speeds. If nobody gets back to me that has done this already I'll give it a go later.

Thanks but already do that. Really would like to snapshot the server before doing some upgrades and wanted to find out if anyone on edugeek is already doing this. EDIT - Dont really want to be causing myself issues if someone else has already done this.

I have a hyper-v 2012r2 host running a gen 2 2012r2 Windows server that has the FMS and Sims files and databases on. MS say it is not a good idea to snapshot a database but I have read of a few people shutting down the computer before taking the snapshot to stop database inconsistency but these were not running Sims or FMS. So does anyone have a virtual FMS and Sims server, and do you take snapshots or checkpoints before doing any maintenance?

Old system Fiber goes in to patch panel and comes out as st This then goes into the back of a really old 3com switch (10mb) / media converter New System The new system that was installed for the Nursery has a fiber going to a patch panel and comes out as sc (I think) This sc lead then goes in to the following media converter Can you tell if they are multi mode or single? Would the items I listed before be OK? Thanks for advice so far

OK as this is a small primary I am going to get a media converter. Found this st to sc cable converter on Misco - 50/125 ST to SC Duplex Fibre Optic Cable 2Mtr (3604-2) - www.misco.co.uk and found these 2 media converters TP-LINK MC210CS Gigabit Ethernet Media Converter (MC210CS) - www.misco.co.uk TP-LINK MC200CM Gigabit Ethernet Media Converter (MC200CM) - www.misco.co.uk The only difference between them as far as I can tell is one says and the others says I have no idea what those differences mean so hope someone can give me an idea.

Just pulled our comms cabinet down from the wall (have a new one) and at the back is a really old 3com 10mb switch with a fiber line. We do have a much newer fiber panel but this has a square connector inputs where as the old one has a round connector. Am I better trying to find a fiber converter that fits the round connector and plugging this in to a switch or is it easy to cut the fiber cable and attach a new square plug? BTW this is a primary school.

Some of my schools are on the new and some not. Not much difference speed wise between them. We needed to update some schools due to a Windows 8.1 issue causing the images in a page to either move to a different part of the page or turn into black squares where the image was.

Google currently have something like 30 government states and numerous businesses, they even look after a few banks. Not sure why any educational institution would not want to use them seeing as its all free and a load more usable than any alternatives I have used.

Oh and it does direct file copy. Does not use other providers backup software. It also does server 2 server or cloud 2 cloud backups. Backup Windows Server with CloudBerry Backup - - - Updated - - - Its probably not for everyone but for my primary schools its great.

So whats the point in paying if it goes pete tong and all you can get is your money back. You end up no better than someone than has not paid. Yes it does incremental. and diff. We have a radio broadband which is very slow so the initial upload took about a week but it now takes about 20mins per night with incremental. I use this as a disaster copy of our data and do also do onsite backups so hopefully will never need it.
