OK. I have decided to keep NIC1 for HOST management for a few reasons. 1. This is a very small primary and the server will not be doing a great deal 2. I have read lots of other forums and they all say to keep a NIC aside even in a small 2 NIC server setup. when I try to assign a static IP to the vEthernet NIC I get the following warning: This was the same warning I original got when trying to assign a static IP to both physical NICs. (NIC1 & NIC2) I have just setup a test server (HP Microserver) with 2 NICS. Set static IP, SUB, Gateway, DNS on NIC1 - all OK Set static IP, SUB, Gateway, DNS on NIC2 - Not OK - Gives the same warning. So I am getting the warning on NIC2 or if I assign a V switch I get this warning on vEthernet Hope I have manged to explain things. EDITED

Just found this on experts exchange. I seem to be getting a bit confused.

It was my understanding (not much I know) but when a physical switch gets assigned to a virtual switch all the tick boxes like IP4 IP6 etc all get un-ticked for the physical, the settings all get wiped and a new item is created (VM switch) which does get ticked. Also, I just tried to assign iP, Sub, Gateway, DNS to both physical NICS and it complained about having multiple gateways on the same server. Thanks for putting up with me so far.

Take it I would add the IP to the virtual NICs after they have been created

Are you saying I can assign both NICS to Hyper-V and all will be OK? Would I still be able to remote access the HOST if needed?

^ They are in RAID 10 btw

Right I have 5x 600 15K SAS drives in this server with one being the hot spare. What are you both saying I should have done?

The Hyper-V role installer is asking for some default locations. Obviously I am choosing the D drive (1TB) for the Virtual Hard Disks but what about the virtual machine configuration files which are currently C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V. Should I leave it as the default or choose the D drive?

Am I OK to assign both NICS to be used by 2 virtual switches or does one need to be kept separate for the host? EDIT: Just noticed MS recommend keeping one for the host for remote access etc.

They can also use it at home. We also have scratch v2, Kodu but are also looking at education city as that is meant to be very good

I have been feeling very tired recently so on Sunday I gave up sugar, sweets and crisps. Had a headache for 3 days now but it is getting less each day. Never believed I could cut sugar out of my life but I have and will let you know if it helps. Having this headache just shows how ingrained sugar has been in my body, otherwise I would not be feeling the effects of not having it.

Almost done. Just about to install the Hyper-v role and wondered about NIC Teaming. The server has two NIC's. Taking into account this is a very small primary school should I look at NIC teaming which is not something I have done in the past. For my test Hyper-V server I renamed NIC 2 to VM and used this for the Hyper-V VM's, should I do this again? If you suggest NIC Teaming are their any issues I should consider based on this server being a Host Server.

Am I OK to delete this OEM Dell partition. It is a FAT drive but is marked with Active, Primary Partition?

Installing the OS using the Lifecycle method has resulted in all the drivers being installed but I do have an extra drive (d) with some drivers etc on.

They don't tell us, that's the way they will set up any schools they look after or have any services with. I have been trying to move my schools away from the LA provided services but it has not been easy. for example they look after the backups at a few schools but will only do this for one server at each school so if I want to back up any other servers I have to either find an alternative backup method or copy relevant files from one server to the one LA allocated server that has their backup software. That is just one example of many.

Well I have decided to start over and have just selected OS install in the Lifecycle controller. It is currently downloading the latest drivers prior to installing the OS. I'll keep you posted.

yep. Also installed without any issues.

OK just checked device manger and I have a long list of items under 'Other Devices'. Whats the best way of getting these drivers installed. This is why I properly should have installed the OS using the DELL lifecycle method as it downloads all the drivers while installing.

LOL LOL It's the **** LA that require all primary schools to be setup like this.

OS is installed. Thanks for all the help so far. Wondered if it is worth installing OpenMange Server Administrator from the DELL DVD or any other utils from the DVD, this server will be a hyper-v host server only if that makes a difference.

One last question, promise. @pbainbridge Did you switch the bios over to UEFI or leave as BIOS???

Handy. Cheers. When setting up raid 10 I kept the defaults Adaptive read ahead write back I did some reading and these settings seem fine but wanted to check with everyone at EG if that is OK

Are you then inserting the Windows OS media or the Dell OpenManage DVD?
