I was going to ask that question after having got a list for the main server going down on its own. If both servers go down in a fire a) I would have far more time to get things back up and running while the rooms / school are being fixed etc and B) I would have less options to start with, as I would only have the backups and no replication servers. Any help on the process outlined in my OP would be great.

Just creating a disaster recovery plan of actions list, should the worst happen. This primary school have 2 servers (2008r2). The main server (DC1) has all the roles, all the services and all the data. The second sever (DC2) is just a Global catalog DC with nothing else. The main server also has a good backup with me doing full bare metal backups onsite and in addition system state + data going remotely off site. So should the worst happen and the main server goes down and needs to be replaced / rebuilt, what would be my best plan of action? Would it be something like, move the roles to DC2, install OS on new sever using same IP and name as old server, migrate roles back from DC2, install all software and then restore data (staff / pupils work) from backup. or would it be something like, do a bare metal restore. Not being able to actually test this out completely I would very much welcome any recommendations or issues I should be aware of.

I seem to be having a real issue finding a replacement adapter that works for a Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 tablet. I have had a few other Samsung tablets and know they have none standard power ratings etc. As you can see from my photos this adapter is slightly larger than the normal Samsung adapter and has 5.3 volts and 2.0A I purchased one of the standard Samsung 5v 2.0amp adapters that works on the majority of Samsung tablets and phones from Amazon but it does not charge the Note 2014 properly. It charges, but the battery only lasts for an hour. Even the Samsung website only seems to have the smaller standard power adapter and not the one that came with these Note 2014 The only other thing I can think of is the standard smaller adapter I have purchased from Amazon is faulty but do not want to go chucking more money away so wondered if anyone else has any ideas first.

Well I did eventually get a Gaming PC (Also kept the PS4) I changed out a few parts but eventually ordered this. When I first turned it all on the ASUS Gamer pro motherboard automatically overclocked the processor from 3.5ghz to 4.6ghz without me doing diddly, which is good as I would have probably killed something. Also must say that the free game ' The Last of Us Remastered' I got with the PS4 is one of the best games I have played in years. Thanks for all your help

Our LA have told all the schools they can't use self employed individual in the schools anymore. Basically from April I will need to be a limited company. One of the first things I need to do is pick a name for the limited company that has not already been registered. I am struggling to come up with something creative and would appreciate your help in choosing a name. I could possible use Edutech4schools if noting else pops up.

Just had the following info back from DELL about RAID 5 Also had the quote back for 5 600gb 15K SAS drives and I think the school could be nudged in to paying the additional cost if preferred. How much usable space would I get if I used them in R10?

This will be a DELL PowerEdge T420 with Xeon E5-2430 2.2ghz chip 16gb ram Raid controller not decided yet 5 years next day warranty I have just contacted DELL to see how much a 'Real' SAS drive will be.

Thanks @lokalzuk How many drives should I get? Does 5 1tb drives with 4 in RAID 10 and one standing by sound good?

Due to time constraints etc I will be sticking with RAID. Taking in to account this is a primary school with limited funds would you, 1. Suggest getting a price for SAS drives? If so how many? 2. Stay with Nearline SAS drives but use RAID 10.

Lists it as Near line SAS.

The drives are SAS drives that come with a DELL T420 server.

Thanks. capacity probably is not an issue as they only use 400gb So what would the usable capacity be of using 4 1tb disks in RAID 10. It's probably either 1 or 2 tb. I have just been reading the following info and am getting a bit worried about Raid5 New RAID level recommendations from Dell - Spiceworks

I am going to be switching out an old 2008r2 server for a nice new 2012r2 server at a small primary school. I just read a DELL report saying they do not recommend RAID 5 or 50 anymore. The old server has 5 250gb drives. 4 of the drives are in Raid 5 which gives a total of 700gb storage space, which is more than enough space. The 5th drive is a hot plug drive ready to kick in when one of the raid 5 drives goes down. This configuration gives us 2 drive failures before things are none recoverable. I am currently building a replacement server and will probably be getting 1TB drives due to the good cost of these drives. So do I get 5 1TB drives and config the RAID as the older server or do I look at alternative disk / RAID scenario, something like RAID 10. Thanks for any advice.

When I last installed a DELL server about 5 years ago I used the DELL built in OS installer software to install Windows 2008r2. Basically power on server, hit F10 which took me to a DELL server config page, enter in RAID info, let it know what server OS I was going to install and hit apply. The Dell server would then ask for the 2008r2 CD and would install the OS along with DELL drivers etc automatically. It was all nice and easy. I am just about to order a new DELL server so contacted the LA who supply a number of server services to the school, just to make sure Server 2012r2 was compatible. I received a message back saying that the remote backup software might have an issue with any hidden DELL partitions and could I remove any superfluous partitions, and only use partitions that you create within Windows itself. Basically asking me to wipe the drives before installing the OS. So would wiping all partitions mean I lose the ability to use the DELL OS installer? or does this run from somewhere else like the bios? When setting up a server do you normally use the pre installer software or wipe it all and manually install the OS?

If I was you I would test both and then decide. All my primary schools decided on Google Apps for Ed but they are both free (Office 365 has some payments for upgraded plans) if using for Education.

So if I have understood there are 2 changes since server 2008r2 1 - Do not run DCPROMO as using server manager is standard 2 - No need to adprep .... as this is automatic now. Am I right?

At my primary schools we use session based but they only have one server etc

We use Google and it seems a few poster have not. If you had used Google Apps you would not be posting these questions as they do not make sense. It's possible to block files being shared outside the domain, Data retention is not an issue for a Google Apps Admin user etc. Lots of schools and even local authorities are using Google Apps and have been for many years. Not saying do not plan etc but nobody would be using a system if these issues had not already been sorted.
