Thanks @Steve21 I have opened SQL Configuaratiion manager and enabled TCP and named pipes but have also noticed that the SQL Server Agent (SQL2012) is stopped. Should this be started?

I am just about to carry out an SQL 2008r2 to SQL2012 migration and in the instructions it has the following, If SQL Express is installed with limited or no network connectivity, how do I enable this? Or is this simply saying that the server needs to be networked.

Worked it out. In windows 7 you tick the box to show physical stores, in windows 8 leave it in ticked.

Hi, I have a certificate that I need to import in to Windows 8. On Windows 7 I would double click on the cert, click import, click browse to choose a store, Tick show physical stores, browse to trusted root certification authority, choose local computer and click OK. On windows 8 when I browse to trusted root certificate authority I get the following, registry third party group policy enterprise smart card So a bit confused which to select. Any advice

Could someone just check the 'Log On' tab within each of the SQL services and let me know what they have for 'log on as' Just want to make sure Sims and FMS will be OK after migrating Thanks

Found a fix. When the migration asked me for Authenticated user or sa user to proceed I was originally using the sa acount. When I used the authenticated user all work fine.

This was a vanilla set up, just so I could test the migration and I installed with mostly defaults. When I run dmconfig /test I get Protocol - tcp port - 8080 directory - C:\DOCSTORAGE backup - c:\DOCSTORAGE BACKUP tcp://localhost:8080/documents.rem server running

I am currently testing out a migration from SQL2008R2 to SQL2012 using the Capita migration tool. During the migration it asks if I want to enable the redirect service, which I do and then it asks for the Documents folder location. I thought this would be DOCSTORAGE but when I point it at c:\DOCSTORAGE it says that the document server cannot be accessed on C:\DOCSTORAGE. Not sure how to proceed.

Hi, Just installing SQL Express 2012 (LA have asked for this version) on a test machine and during the install it asks for 2 service account users. The defaults it lists are, SQL Server Database Engine - NT Service\MSSQL$SQL2012 SQL Server Browser - NT Authority\LOCALSERVICE I am just wondering what I should change these to. The school will have Sims and FMS migrated from SQL2008R2 Thanks NB. Just checking the SQL2008R2 install and all SQL services have been set as NT Authority\SYSTEM

I have been told by the LA to migrate the Sims and FMS databases from SQL2008r2 to SQL2012, but both databases need to be simple and not full before I start. The LA have sent me a script to shrink the Sims database and set it to Simple and they are saying that as the FMS database is only 1gb I can simply use SQL management studio / FMS Database \ properties and change 'Full' to 'Simple'. Before I do this I just wanted to make sure this was all OK. Thanks

Still not sorted this. Removing contacts from the OU does not stop anyone from accessing the contacts list. I think it disables sharing of contacts. hmmm, anyone got any good ideas?

Another option would be Google Hangouts, Not much needed by the end user to get up and running. EDIT: and you can video chat at the same time.

Yes and no. Normal home users would not want to have unattended mode anyway and the last time I tested unattended mode it installed everything automatically after I ticked a box to use unattended mode.

Last time I wiped a dell and used the Dell disk it simply installed Windows and I then had the option of installing all the junk-ware.

if its just for your mum Google chrome has remote access and is very good. We are going to try creating a 'master' google account and then install drive on our server as the root directory for all files. We should be able to share users home folders etc using google share, so users get individual areas like home folders and I get to backup all the user files as normal using our onsite server backup. The beauty of this is a user can add or change files either through Google's drive services or the old fashioned way of mapped network drives as they are all the same files and folders.

directory is not an app in itself but is part of the contacts app. When a 'test' pupil clicks directory while in the contacts app it lists all the domain email accounts. EDIT: What this school want, is to hide or remove the 'directory' link, but removing access to the contacts app might be the next best thing.

In google apps if you select to disable a user Google will move that user into a special disabled OU for you.

One of my primary schools has been using Google Apps for Ed for a few years but only with the staff and now they would like to get the older pupils (y6) using it. The ICT coordinator has been testing and has asked if it is possible to give the pupils access to email but remove or hide the directory listing that lists all the staff emails from the contacts page. Is this possible? Another few issue I can think of would be the fact that auto-complete would list staff emails anyway and the fact that the entire Google system is built based on sharing by email address.

I agree, although the college down the road has been 100% Google for about 5 years.

Anyone thought about creating a single 'master' Google apps account and installing the Google drive app to the root of the file server and moving all the server data into this root folder? This would give you a standard file server with all the data and network shares and onsite backups etc but also sync with the cloud. This would also be a good way to migrate over to the cloud as you could run both in parallel for a while and then get everyone to just access cloud files. You would still be able to create onsite backups if needed. What do you think?

Think this might only be possible from the Google Apps for Ed Admin panel, which offers far more control than Group Policy does.
